  1. If it is the old topo 1:100k, the disk needs to be in for it to run. There is a work around installation so that you can run it without having the disk in the drive. Do not remember where that is but do a search on the site.
  2. Thanks for the update Snake! I need to do those! Is anybody up for doing them that wakes up later on weekends? On my first visit there, NightHunter told us that the conduit was used by illegals. On my second visit there, with Chuy and a bunch of people, I think, we spooked an illegal who was using the conduit to sneak north. I hope they know how to swim, or they may end up in the San Diego water supply at Otay Donde esta el cacho? I'd rather go with a group. Hopefully there are some others that haven't done those yet... The bats will keep you company, TG And watch out for Ginger's landmine in Ghost Waters. It sounds like I need a volunteer to walk in front of me... I did these caches last Saturday with zatyko. We confirmed with Chuy that Walking the Plank is more than likely missing. The Subterranean and Ghost Waters caches were a blast! I highly recommend those! We did not see bats in Ghost waters but we spooked a bunch in the Subterranean Cache! Oh, be sure to bring an extra pair of shoes that you don't mind wasting. Thanks for the heads up on the shoes, T4. I'll be sure to bring another pair. I'm still looking for a volunteer to walk in front of me. Hmmm, maybe I can get the volunteers that Harmon uses to walk in front of him... Looking for escort-service are we? All of them well-trained by the way. Harmon, please note that there are no unbunched socks here! Your stint as the fashion police has had a positive effect on the caching community. Yes, that photo is straight out of Harmon's fashion mag. With this amount of bat guano I think that the socks have probably been vaporised. The feet will go next. Socks are the least of his problems. Run out now and score all the caches that used to be at eyelevel.
  3. But which is the better choice? Do I necessarily want to change it to agree with my magnetic compass? Thanks, Beck They must agree to be accurate. True North is the location of the polar axis of the earth. Magnetic North is the location that a magnetic compass will point to. I live in San Diego, CA. If I were to walk North using a compass I would be heading towards the magnetic pole of the earth and miss the North pole by many miles. Do a Google search on this issue. They will explain it better than I can. A few diagrams will make the explanation clear.
  4. Change GPSR to read Magnetic instead of True. Should then agree with your magnetic compass.
  5. Try calling Garmin. I have a Nuvi 770 that comes loaded with CN2008 North America and Europe. I called them and they said they will send me the DVDs. I will be able to load these to the PC to plan trips. They will not be downloadable to any GPSRs. They are sending them without charge. Wish they would just include them with the units.
  6. If the park did not approve the Earthcaches, would they then remove them? I would like to be there when Notaranger carries Canyon Sin Nombre or Split Mountain away. Hopefully all potsherds would be left in place.
  7. I have a similar problem with my NUVI770. Using the car 12volt adapter the unit works as a GPSR. If I connect the unit to my PC with the USB cable it enters mass storage mode. If I use an AC adapter that has a USB output it goes into mass storage mode. The output of the AC adapter is 5volts. I do not have the Garmin AC power adapter that plugs into the USB port. I wonder if that adapter has a larger power output than the USB standard of about 5 volts. I'm wondering if the unit sees a larger voltage [such as 9volts] if it then powers in the GPSR mode and not the mass storage mode.
  8. Just did this the other day. Look in tools or help and there will be a way to change the position format.
  9. I think the REI price is $349 and Garmin is giving a 50 dollar rebate.
  10. The norm has a bit of a debate about it. My style is this. If I am looking for the cache and I can't find it. It will get a note or a DNF. The DNF is for when I have no more ideas on where to look. The cache has got the best of me. A note is for when something else comes up. I got thirsty, it got dark, the crack house next door was raided and I had to go, muggles came along and would not leave etc. Others would post a DNF for everthing that I used a note for. The common ground is that we agree to post something so the cache owner knows what's going on with the cache and that someone was looking. The above is what I would also do. If I made a real effort where I thought the cache was I would log a DNF. If I was unable to get to the cache because of conditions ( a high tide when the cache is only accessible at low tide ) then I would post a note saying I was unable to search the proper area. I do this because I tend to put off looking for caches that have too many DNF's.
  11. I took mine to Hawaii and had no trouble with security or the airline. It was in my carry on and I did not use it on the flight. The airlines vary in their policies of actually using the GPSR during the flight, but I'm not aware of restrictions that prevent you from having it in your carry on.
  12. Problem solved with help from Palm and Cachemate. Deleted Cachemate from Palm and PC and reinstalled to both.
  13. Have a request to them and will be sending one to Palm. Never hurts to ask here though.
  14. I have been using Cachemate for two years with no problems. Last night after exporting the caches from GSAK and Hotsynching the PDA it seemed to Hotsynch properly. When I went to open Cachemate on the PDA I got the following message. Fatal Alert Memory Mgr.c,Line:3732, NULL handle. Had to push the small button on the back of the PDA to reset. All the other applications were Hotsynched OK and updated correctly and function normally. Each time I tap the Cachemate icon I get the above message and have to reset again. Any ideas would be very helpfull.
  15. I thought of that as well (although I did not post it). They do not require a lisence, and like Airman said, they will be taken seriously. I don't know how expensive they are, but IIRC they were allowed for land based use a couple of years ago. Edited to add: Do a search on Amazon, they can be had for 400 or 500 dollars. Just did a little checking also and they can also be rented. Really!!!???, Do you have a link? That would definitely be worth considering for some of my trips. Do not have a link. Do a search on Personal Locator Beacons. There are some sources that rent the small units and Satellite phones. I have never used the services so do not know how easy they are to work with. These devices are only for use when you really need help. In the times I have been hiking or driving offroad I have never needed one. Looking back on some of the places I have been and done something stupid one of these things would have been really handy.

  17. If the concern is of being able to call for help, I'm surprised that Personal Locator devices have not been mentioned. I think that there are some now that are similar to those carried on aircraft and boats but smaller. These transmit your position and are taken seriously when activated.
  18. Have purchased a few items from them on two occassions. GPSR, accessories, and map software. No problems. Will buy from them again. Prompt shipping and notification of any backorder problems. All in factory packaging.
  19. Go to the Garmin website. It is basically a beanbag with a mounting base that you attach the GPSR that is mounted in an adjustable holder. Depending on your dash configuration it may or may not be secure. I use mine in a 1989 4Runner and 91 MR2. The suction cup mount may be more secure but the beanbag mount is really easy to use. If there is a seller in your area that handles Garmin products they should be able to show you one. I bought mine from GPSONSALE. Their website has pictures of it.
  20. I originally used the windshield suction mount and it worked well and I liked it. Then I found out that the California motor vehicle laws prohibit mounting anything on the windshield, rear window, or side windows. Can't figure this one out as the GPS only blocked my view of the hood. Am now using the beanbag mount and like it better than the suction mount. Much easier to take the GPS off and on. Adapts to other cars easily and can even pick it up and move closer to me to read if I need to. I also use it off road in 4WD situations and it works fine unless you are going fast or at steep angles. You can even use it on your table if you are setting up routes or waypoints. Took it on a houseboat trip and it was solid on the console. You might want to give this option a thought.
  21. Have bought from them on 2-3 occassions. No problems and fast delivery. One item was not in stock and they let me know right away. Would buy from them again.

As of today [ 24 July] my scheduled queries for 21&23 July have not arrived. I tried re-requesting them yesterday and the have not arrived. Not an email problem. They have not been generated yet. I'm still getting my watch list logs and new area cache notifications. They just showed up. Not sure which dates they represent but at least they are here.

    Pocket Queries

Not sure this is a problem with email adresses. My queries that should have been sent 21july and today have not been sent according to my account information. Think that the geocaching site has a major problem with the way that they are run. Why do the newest queries get to cut to the front of the line?
