  1. I've been using GSAK for what I thought was quite some time. I use a lot of the custom macros which can be found at gsak.net. I generate my GC stats with it. I use it to manage my wife's and my pocket queries. I've created a bunch of filters that I/we use to geocache in Southern California, Nevada, and Arizona. I even perfected the use of the polygon filters which allow me to be on the hunt for a geocache virtually anywhere I usually drive. But, it never dawned on me that I could use it to manage my saved waypoints. Lately, while using my Garmin Oregon 450, I noticed that every time that I created a new waypoint that the unit created a new waypoint gpx file with a new date on it. So, I had about 20 of these cluttering the /garmin/gpx directory. It was driving me nuts. So, what I started doing was copying and pasting from these html like files and consolidating them all in one file. I really got pretty good at it. Then, I realized that I could import all of these files into GSAK in one step. Once I did that, I deleted all of the waypoint gpx files and created only one new waypoint file with all of my waypoints. Geez, do I feel dumb now.
  2. Yes, create a pocket query, very easy to do. And use that file and you can open it on either GSAK or EasyGPS (I use these two, there are probaly others). EasyGPS is a free easy quick download and is worth your time while GSAK is a lot more in-depth and involved but takes more time to use. By the way, I was born in Buffalo! Just thought I'd throw that out there! haha. You don't have to use GSAK or EasyGPS. Just unzip the pocket queries and put them in the garmin/gpx folder on either the SD card or the unit itself. I usually have 5 pocket queries with 1000 geocaches each loaded on mine at any given time for a total of 5,000!.
  3. I haven't had any issues with the Birdseye images once they are on my GPS either. But, it is a royal pain to go through the download process.
  4. Thanks for the replies lads. I wonder if those replacement screens are genuine, or knockoff of the real thing. Either way i am interested in getting one. I am gonna throw the ebay seller a message soon asking have they got 450 screens in stock Edit: Has anyone seen any good instuction site or video on disassembling Garmin Oregon gps ? I took one apart quite some time ago. I followed the instructions on a Youtube video. I tried searching for the video just now and I couldn't find it. The only hard part was the cable. I remember having problems putting it back on, but it is still working a year and a half later.
  5. I had some issues a couple of years ago with a Legend HCx and then an Oregon 200. I called Garmin and they went out of their way to solve my issues. I wonder if their software support people are part of a different group.
  6. For those of you with Oregons, don't use them without screen protectors! You can't buff out the scratches or it damages the touchscreen. There is hope though. I have come across Oregon touchscreen displays, not for the 450 though, on eBay for $30-$40. It would require that you disassemble your unit which is not too difficult.
  7. That would really upset me. Where's Garmin on all of this?
  8. Go to this link: http://www.geocaching.com/my/uploadfieldnotes.aspx To upload Field Notes from your Garmin Colorado or Garmin Oregon: 1. Plug your Garmin device into your computer with a USB cable. 2. Click "Browse" on this web page and go to the Garmin directory on your device’s drive. 3. Select the file named "geocache_visits.txt" and click "Upload" on this page to upload your Field Notes. 4. We recommend that you delete the "geocache_visits.txt" file on your device once your Field Notes have been successfully uploaded. Once the Field Notes are uploaded you can return to the Field Notes list page to start logging your finds. (These are the GC.com instructions)
  9. I noticed that slow down in Basecamp too after I downloaded 32 different high quality images. So, to get basecamp to work as fast, I meant slow as it was before, I must delete the Birdseye imagery that it took me over a week to download. This IS CRAZY! I won't even get started with my BaseCamp complaints: 1. Custom icons for my waypoints get replaced by a dot after Basecamp detects my GPS. 2. Icons that Basecamp has available won't download to GPS. 3. It is SLOW no matter what map you have loaded 4. There's more, I just can't remember right now!
  10. Over this last week I have downloaded a total of 1.5 Gigs of BirdsEye images. This covers a relatively small area near where I live. I was planning on having imagery from all of Southern California on my unit, but I figured out that it would be about 42 gigs of images! Then, I would have to think about how many frustrating weeks it would take me to do it.
  11. Well, now that I understand the whole process, it seems that the rendering is what makes all of this so slow. Originally, I thought that I was just downloading pictures. Maybe their servers are rendering the images first which makes the downloads painfully slow. Then, Basecamp has to render the image when transferring to the GPS. Is my conclusion correct, or am I just making things up? In any case, I hate the whole process. They should give us a DVD with all the images so that we can bypass the download process. -Not a happy camper!
  12. Tell me it aint so! I thought Delorme had a better map experience than Garmin.
  13. I am wondering if I can get my money back after 7 days of frustration.
  14. Having the Birdseye imagery is great. Getting it on your computer is a pain in the butt due to Basecamp and the ridiculously slow downloads. Come on Garmin, get it right.
  15. Is anybody having issues with BirdsEye imagery downloads today? I have tried downloading a few areas this morning and it is not working for me. It was down this weekend and this is what one of the Garmin App Devolopers said in response to the outage on their forums: Desktop App Developer Default BirdsEye outage 7/24 - 7/26 We are currently investigating the BirdsEye outage that occurred over the weekend. It appears that service was restored around 9AM PDT this morning. I'll post again when we have more information. Desktop App Developer ____________________ What did happen? ____________________ A couple things I want to clarify based on what I read in the other thread that was discussing the issue. 1. The forums are staffed by the desktop application developers. Unfortunately with a system such as BirdsEye that has numerous moving pieces (Garmin servers, partner servers, our software, etc) we don't have visibility into every piece. 2. The boards are only monitored 8-5 M-F. Even then because its only developers checking it may be hours or even the next day before you get a response. 3. The forums are primarily meant for feedback on the applications, not as product support. If you think that expanded support forums are useful please make your voices heard to our product support team. With all that being said we will still try to do the best we can to help out with issues that are posted. _____________________ If the Garmin forums are not for support, why do they exist? So, why is it that I can't download anything this morning?
  16. I have the whole City Navigator North America, including Canada, and about 1/2 of the TOPO 2008 loaded on my SD card on my Oregon 200, 300, & 450. Plus, I also have several GPSfiledepot maps on them.
  17. Yes it can be done...I do this on my Colorado (Oregon is very similar). I have mine set up with two profiles: Automotive has the City Navigator active, Geocaching has the Topo active. So it is possible to use the internal memory for map storage? I have both turned on and active at the same time.
  18. Ditto I just bought my subscription this morning and I have nothing to show for my $29.99. I just posted on the Garmin forums. Hopefully they'll get this fixed soon. Otherwise, I am going to ask for my money back.
  19. Ditto I just bought my subscription this morning and I have nothing to show for my $29.99.
  20. Garmin Oregons', Dakota's, and Colorado's NEED the following features added: 1. File Manager to move pocket queries from back up directories to the GPX file folder. I have almost 40 pocket queries that I work with. Heck, it could also be used to move maps from one directory to another. It is a pain to have to do this with a computer! 2. It needs to have a way of easily resetting the internal geocache database so that it doesn't hang when you add a large amount of new caches. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10.
  21. What I have been doing for quite some time now is loading all of my geocaches on the SD card. I have done the following with an Oregon 200, Oregon 300, Oregon 450, and a Dakota 10: 1. In order for the Oregons, Dakotas, and Colorados to not hang, you must boot up the unit without any geocaches loaded. So, I start my unit without the SD card. If you don't have an SD card, then you could just delete the geocaches from the unit first with your computer. 2. Then, turn off the unit and place the SD card back in and boot it up again. It will take a little bit to load, but it won't hang.
  22. What's Winn-Dixie?? They are usually located near Piggly Wiggly's.
  23. They are both built very strong. We've owned the Oregon 200, 300, and 450. Plus, we've also had a Dakota 10. My wife loved her Dakota 10 because it was so small and fit her hand perfectly. I remember that her Dakota 10 was brighter in direct sunlight than our Oregon 200 & 300. But, at night it was not too clear because of it's lower resolution. As for the Wherigo capability of the Oregons, who cares because I don't know anyone who plays it. The Dakota series seems too expensive at this time and would only be the best choice for those who want a truly compact unit. Overall, right now, I think the Oregon 450 is the best unit to go with. Though, if a Dakota 20 was about $199.99, I would probably change my tune.
  24. Just loaded it onto my Oregon 450. Not sure if I will have much use for the updates on this beta. But, I do wish the last few updates would apply to the Oregon 200 & 300 that also reside in my house.
  25. All of your geocaching, and Garmin Oregon questions can be answered here: Garmin Oregon Wiki To answer you questions specifically, I'll paste some of the information from the link above: How do I mark a Geocache as "found" or "did not find"? After you have a selected a geocache to navigate to go back to Main Menu>Geocaches. You can mark the cache as "found" or "did not find by selecting Log Attempt. In either case the symbol of the cache will change to an open treasure chest. If you mark a cache as "found" it will also be moved from the Unfound List to the Found List and your total cache find count will increment by one. Now that I've found some caches how do I use fieldnotes to log my caches? Connect your Oregon to your computer and navigate to this link. The instructions on this page will tell you how to upload your fieldnote file in order to streamline the process of logging your found caches. Fieldnotes automate the process of logging caches you have found by bringing you directly to the log page for each found cache. The log date and log type are pre-filled based on the note you made in the field on your Oregon. Fieldnotes are saved on the Oregon in a file called [OR drive]:\Garmin\geocaching_visits.txt . This file contains all of your fieldnotes; one line per cache and each line contains the GCID of the cache, date and timestamp of your attempt, the type of fieldnote (e.g. found, did not find, needs maintenance, or unattempted) and an optional text comment. As part of the process of logging your cache you will upload this file to Groundspeak to automate the process of logging your caches. This file will grow as you log caches and it is recommended that you purge this file once you have uploaded the notes to Groundspeak. There is no known file size limit, but several users have reported issues going past 1000 fieldnotes. Currently there are several issues with the way Groundspeak handles fieldnotes. Most of these issues revolve around problems with how logs are dated based on timestamps in the fieldnotes. The issues are documented in this thread.
