  1. Solved!!!!!! The darn memory card was bad in the sense that the Legend HCx was not able to read it. But, it seemed fine on all three of the computers we have at the house. By chance, I put the 4GB Sandisk card from my Centro in it, and it WORKED! Yeah! I then talked to Garmin and they said that the 4GB shouldn't work, but it does. I loaded all of the City Navigator Maps for the whole United States and all of the Topo 2008 maps for the Western states (About 1,900 MB). I know this was overkill because I rarely travel outside of California, but I wanted to make sure that it really was working. Garmin did tell me that they will send me a 256MB card to replace my defective 128MB card. I have since been using my Legend HCx all over town, and the Salton City area. I am impressed with the unit. It is a lot better than my old Legend. I really like how easy it is to send a huge list of geocaches to the unit, and not have to enter them individually. I don't think my old Legend was able to do that. Also, it doesn't seem to lose sat signal, not even in my house! I just hope that Garmin hasn't sent out too many of these with defective micro SD cards. By the way, THANKS EVERYONE! Jeep Del Fuego
  2. Okay, I figured out how to turn off the basemap. When I turn it off, there is no map information displayed. I talked to Garmin tech support, and the guy that I talked to had no idea what is going on with my unit. He was going to consult somebody else in the morning and call me back. I guess I was taking the correct steps every time. They might be sending me another card, but I'm suspecting that the internal reader may be bad. It's a bummer, I wanted to use the topo maps for a hike into snow covered mountains near my house. Not to mention, the hours that I have spent messing with it and not shopping for Christmas presents.

  4. I'm not sure how to do that. When I go to /map setup/info, I have no maps listed. This is really driving me crazy. I thought I might be doing something wrong, then I went to my friends house to load the same Topo 2008 maps on his Nuv680 and everything worked fine on his unit. -Jeep Del Fuego When you look to see which maps are active, does it show the local topo map being checked? What happens if you turn off the basemap?
  5. I'm pretty sure I'm getting closer to solving this problem. I have downloaded about 8 Topo 2008 maps to the SDcard. They take up about 30 mb. So, it is not even close to filling up the 128 mb card. But, the maps don't seem to be recognized by my Legend HCx. When I zoom in, the display changes from basemap to overzoom. Where do I go from here?
  6. I just downloaded my Topo 2008 maps directly to the SD card (I took it out of the Legend HCx), I plugged the card back in to the unit, and I still can't see any map detail! When I go to Setup Map/Information, I don't see any maps listed. But, when I take a look at the SD card, I see a gmapsupp.img file. I'm only loading about 8mb, is that too much to download? Is there a setting on the Legend HCx that I need to select to see the map detail? I never had this problem with my old Garmin Legend (the blue one).
  7. Hi everyone, I need help with loading the maps on my Legend Hcx. I used to use the old Etrex Legend (the clear blue one), but my wife accidently donated it to GoodWill. Anyway, my Etrex has the little 128MB SD card (micro?). I go through all the steps of highlighting the maps I want downloaded, then download them to the device. It goes through all the motions, and a few minutes later it finishes. But, I can't view anything, but the basemap info. I even plugged the card directly into my computer and it shows that 31 MB of information was downloaded. AGH!!!! These are the exact steps that I take: 1. Turn on the unit 2. menu/setup/interface/USB Mass Storage 3. The display on the unit shows a computer with a GPS attached to it 4. I select the maps I want to download from Topo 2008 5. I select map sections with the Map Tool 6. I click on Transfer (send to device) 7. Select Removable Disk f: 8. Then Mapsource goes through the motions, tells me the download was complete (or something similar) 9. I restart the unit, and nothing! The manual is of no help. Do I have to enable the map somewhere? I've also tried the same steps with the City Navigator NT North America and I get the same results. -I just want to go hiking
