  1. Yep, we're on it. The hard part will be coming up with a solution that doesn't make everyone mad When the contest took place in the forums, peer pressure prevented sock puppet voting. Now that votes are secret.... I've emailed WeightMan and jcar. as they are the official moderators of the COTM contest and we'll do our best to come up with a solution asap.
  2. This is true. Groundspeak is a private company and is free to set their own rules (within reason). However I am a customer. If I don't like those rules, I may just decide not to be a customer any longer. I'm usually pretty laid back on these issues, but this one has gotten my blood boiling. I need to sit back and relax for a bit, but at this moment, I am very close to giving up geocaching over this matter. Geocaching has been a big part of my life for the past five years, so I don't take this lightly!
  3. I seldom do this... I am a firm beleiver that this is groundspeaks site and what they say goes. However, assuming there is not something going on that we don't know about, this seems to be something that deserves a little customer descent. I suggest that caches start appearing all over the country with the exact same text! Whoops... now THATS an agenda
  4. Considering the way the question was asked.... that answer could mean yes or no.
  5. Only once have I actually seen a bear while Hiking and that was up in the Pasayten Wilderness. It was a sow with two cubs and we gave her a very wide bearth. There have been several times in the Cascades that I have come upon fresh bear scat, that WASNT there on the way in 20 minutes ago! Far more likely than bear, at least in the populated lowlands is cougar or mountain lion. Thanks to some severe hunting restrictions, the cat population has skyrocketed and they have not exactly been shy about approaching people, especially children. I'm always packing on the trail and have never had the need to unholster my sidearm for any kind of beast, four legged or two. I hope I never have to, but it's there if I need it.
  6. Sounds like an upgrade may be in your very near future. You could send the V back to Garmin for repair, but the cost of doing so would probably get you a good start on a new GPS.
  7. When the Colorado was first released it was NOT ready for prime time. The geocaching mode was totally broken along with several other things. Since then Garmin has fixed most of the problems. I won't pretend there are not still some issues left but for the most part, it's a great machine. I was sceptical that it would be a better geocaching unit than the 60 series but having the ability to display cache pages right on the unit, as well as keeping track of finds and UPLOADING THEM TO GROUNSPEAK for you... I think it is now a better unit than the 60's.
  8. If you order stuff from the Groundspeak store, you can specify "WILL-CALL" shipping and pick it up yourself in Woodenville. No storefront, but at least you don't end up paying the shipping charges.
  9. I had anticipated this problem, but never came up with a satisfactory resolution. There are several people in Snohomish County that have come upon a roadblock. There are plenty of caches in the page they are working on, but they have already found all of them previous to the cutoff date of the challenge or are the owner of them. What to do? Well, the best solution I can come up with is to place some more caches! I won't list the pages here because I don't want to give anyones progress away... but feel free to post those pages you need and perhaps another cacher can help you out.
  10. So, I hit end navigation. Then can I hit page, go to the map page , and use the white arrow to select the cache on the map or should I hit "Find" and select the cache that way? Like I said I thought I tried both ways and it kept trying to tell me the "driving directions". It said I should turn left at the end of the street which was about 200 feet from where I parked and go another 150 feet, which was outside the park in the middle of the street. And then every time I selected the cache waypoint again it started all over with the stupid driving diretions. So, if I get within a certain distance of the cache shouldn't it stop the driving navigation and start giving me the distance to the cache? Shouldn't it automatically do that when I get close enough to the cache? In setup autorouting has to be set to PROMPT, not On-road or Off-Road Press <MENU> <Recalculate> <Off-Road>
  11. Upgrade to a Colorado. I do not beleive there is any way to get the 60 series to understand GPX files directly or to read them from the SD Card. For the 60 series, you can load your GPX file into Mapsource, and then transfer the waypoints to the GPS.
  12. You can use the POI loader if you want but that will not invoke Geocaching mode. To utilize geocaching mode, copy or export a GPX file and place it in the /GARMIN/GPX directory. Call it anything you want, but I call mine geocaches.gpx.
  13. My Colorado adds the ability to mark geocaches as found, and when you get home upload your finds to your account.
  14. It is always hunting season for Geocaches. And NO bag limits! However Catch and Release is the general rule.
  15. Bikes are only allowed on the first part of the trail, the part that is on an old road bead. Once you actually head into the valley, Bikes are not permitted. Other than that, the trail is faily flat most of the way, except for the loop at the end which does a pretty good downhill to the river (which of course means uphill to get back).
  16. I'm surprised no one has mentioned Pocket Queries!
  17. I hope not. They need to either introduce a replacement for it FIRST, or (if possible) modify the software on the Colorado model so it can function as a replacement. With the latest updates, the Colorado is closer than it was to being a 60csx replacement, but it's not there yet. In my case it replaced an older 60C similar to the OP's. I consider it an upgrade, but I do have to get use to doing some things differently.
  18. There is an old saying. A man with a GPS knows exactly where he is. A man with TWO GPS's is not quite sure.
  19. The SD cards are NOT a waste. It depends on what you need. One advantage of the SD Cards is that you can move them from one GPS to another, IE... When you upgrade. Your DVD version is tied to ONE and ONLY ONE GPS Unit. If you upgrade GPS's you'll have to buy it all over again. I was torn, but finally settled for the SD Card version of City Navigator. The entire country (actually BOTH countries... if you count canada) is loaded on one card. I will never have to load maps again. Since I use other mapping software on my laptop (I'm not fond of Mapsource), it didn't bother me to much to lose the access to the maps on my PC.
  20. It all depends on what you want to do with them. If you want to use the Auto-Routing capability of your GPS, you need City Navigator. I don't beleive TOPO 2008 is routable. I know it's NOT on my Colorado 400T. If you are looking for trails, topographic data ect, then TOPO is the choice.
  21. And I am happy to report that I have never needed to use the Fire Extinguisher that we keep in the kitchen, but I keep it there anyway.
  22. While the page numbers go that high, I only count 80 pages. Thanks, 80 sounds doable. dick Or you can come up north to Snohomish County where we just had an FTF on our TG Challenge. 53 Pages.
