  1. I haven't seen the issue with shutoffs. Are you autorouting using City Nav or just straight line routing with Topo Maps? I've seen the other issue. I can cause it by scroll back on the first picture which I have loaded. I have 5-6 jpg images loaded in [drive]:\photos. Can you let me know how many pictures you have loaded and what directory they located in on your CO? Other people can't seem to reproduce it so there must be some other variable involved. GO$Rs When the unit is shutting down in map mode, it doesn't seem to matter whether I'm routing or just displaying maps with no routing. It also doesn't seem to matter if I'm moving or not, as it has shutdown while stopped also. I have City Nav loaded on the Expansion Card, as well as TOPO on the built in memory of course. All maps enabled. I'll have to check for specifics on the images (I don't have the unit with me right now) but there are only about a half dozen small images in the pictures folder on the Internal RAM (Don't want to mess with that expensive City Nav Card).
  2. I am experiancing something that appears to be NEW since upgrading to the latest firmware (2.60). Unlike some my unit has operated pretty much flawlessly since I got it. Now it's shutting down randomly. Just setting in MAP mode driving down the road, I've had it shut off a half dozen times in just a few miles. Ive also found some repeatable situations that can cause to shut down every time: 1. Go to View Pictures 2. Scroll to the last picture 3. Try to scroll one more time.... power off
  3. Is there any word as to whether camp fires will be allowed this year?
  4. WSGA - State Park Regulations
  5. Ahh.... what's a 70CSX? Do you perhaps mean a Garmin 76csx? Generally one needs to load all the maps at once. On units with an SD card you can send one map set to the internal ram and one set to the SD Card.
  6. I can't speak for Tom Tom However Magellen = ZERO CUSTOMER SERVICE, ZIP / NONE / NADDA Garmin = Usually Really Good Customer Service. I;ve even seen them replace out-of-warrenty units for free.
  7. WOW! Dispite record snows, the North Cascades opens EARLY North Cascades Now Open DARRINGTON - Right on schedule, the North Cascades Highway opened to traffic at 8 a.m. today. The first drivers in line when the gates swung open found bare and wet road conditions with temperatures at the summits of Rainy and Washington passes right around the freezing level, state Department of Transportation maintenance crews said. A trace of new snow fell at about 11 p.m. Wednesday and again about 4 a.m. today, but nothing delayed the opening. Crews had been working since late March to open the highway, which closes each winter because of heavy snow and the danger of avalanches. The 69-mile stretch of mountainous road, which is part of Highway 20, had been closed since Dec. 4. Highway 20 is one of four highways that link the west side of the state to the east side, across the Cascade Range. The highway provides an important link for the communities of Darrington and Arlington along Highway 530, which connects with the North Cascades route at Rockport. The weather forecast calls for no more precipitation today and an afternoon high temperature near 60. Another front may bring light rain or possibly snow at the summits on Friday and Saturday nights, but daytime highs will remain in the 60s, allowing for a nice ride for drivers, transportation department spokesman Dustin Terpening said. Just about every year the North Cascades Highway is closed for the winter and generally reopens to traffic in April or May. In some years it reopens early, as it did in 2005 when it opened March 10. The latest opening was June 14, 1974. And the highway never closed during the drought winter of 1976-77. Drivers headed over the pass can dial 511 from most phones to get updated road information from the state Department of Transportation. Information also is available at www.wsdot.wa.gov/traffic/passes/northcascades.
  8. This one isn't mine but I have one just like it. One of these days I'll hook it up and see if it actually works.
  9. Geocacher rescued from Island in Spokane River Including the story since the URL will probably change Chilly swimmer rescued from river island Staff and wire reports April 14, 2008 Sure it was a sunny day. But it isn't summer. And that's now apparent to 23-year-old Bruce Benson, who was stranded Sunday evening on a Spokane River island at the T.J. Meenach Bridge. Benson had apparently been participating in the GPS-aided activity known as geocaching and believed there was a cache on the island under the bridge, Batallion Chief Mike Inman said. '"He swam out there when the air was warm," even though the water temperature was a bitter 45 degrees, Inman said. At dusk, when the air temperature dropped, Benson -- wearing nothing but a wet swimsuit -- got cold. He worried that he wouldn't make it back to the mainland. Benson's friend called authorities and they arrived at the bridge about 8 p.m. and set up floodlights on the bridge. They used a boat to pick up the castaway about 8:20 p.m. Inman said it is "absolutely not" a good time of year for swimming the river, and noted that local ordinances require that swimmers in moving water must wear a life jacket. - Thomas Clouse
  10. Same here. As I expect you will find most places in the US.
  11. Be carefull about the making plenty of noise while in a hunting area. Not only will you NOT be the hunters friend in that case, in some states it is illegal. It could be interpreted as scaring away the wildlife (harrassing the hunters).
  12. Amazing...whatever it takes to make a buck I guess...Any such restrictions on the CN dvd? The DVD requires an unlock code and will then only work with one GPSr. At least with the SD card, you can move it to another GPS if you upgrade later.
  13. The WSGA board held a discussion and vote and wants to add two new rules. These were rules we were resisting but apparently are necessary. Effective with the April COTM Voting (Starts May 3) 1. Only current WSGA Members will be allowed to vote. This is the only way to ensure one person/one vote. 2. To be eligible for the contest, the cache must still be active (not archived or disabled) on the last day of the month it is nominated for. We didn't want to have to institute these rules. We wanted as many people as possibe to be able to help pick the cache of the month. However without them it's to easy for one person to subvert the vote.
  14. There will be other injuries.... I can practically guarantee it. Most will be to his wallet. Snomobiling out of bounds Climbing without a permit Cost of the Rescue Helecopter
  15. You can copy it, but since you can't put it on another card it is a worthless as a backup. You are correct that it cannot be put on another card. It is locked to that SD Cards serial number. It is not worthless as a backup. One could accidently delete the file on the card, and replace it with the backup copy.
  16. That would be an ambitious goal. Not including the bonus cache, an optimized route from my house is 333 miles. Yes, but then what would you do. Once you've found EVERY CACHE IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM whats next?
  17. I have not done any of these caches, but the idea of the series is very interesting. Would anyone be interested is attempting this series as a Group and attempting to do the entire solar system in one day? If so, I'd love to try it! Caches in the series: Sam's Solar System: Mercury Sam's Solar System: Venus Sam's Solar System: Earth Sam's Solar System: Mars Sam's Solar System: Ceres Sam's Solar System: Jupiter Sam's Solar System: Saturn Sam's Solar System: Uranus Sam's Solar System: Neptune Sam's Solar System: Pluto Sam's Solar System: Eris Sam's Solar System: Bonus
  18. The biggest problem with external antenna's is that they need a ground plane to work properly. Putting one on the roof of your car provides that ground plane. Putting one on your backpack or even on your hat does not. That being said, they are amplified and should provide a marginally better signal (possibly with more noise). I tried one for a while while hiking and the only thing I noticed was the much lower battery life.
  19. Generally this is true. I remember doing some caching a few years back and had my old Compaq IPAQ on the dashboard of the car. We took a fairly fast turn out of a parking lot and I watched the IPAQ slide across the dash and out the window. It slid down the road a ways, landing right in the middle just as a Semi came by. The semi missed it by inches. I got out of the car, grabbed the IPAQ and... well it's still running to this day. Not even a scratch
  20. Voting is open again. We have restarted from scratch, so if you already voted go back and vote again. Only those that already had WSGA web accounts on April 1 will be allowed to vote this time. This will prevent anyone from creating new accounts to vote over and over. There will probably be some additional changes next month once we have had a change to discuss it completely.
  21. We have confirmed a whole bunch of ballot stuffing in this months Cache of the Month Contest. I have banned 20 accounts that are so obvious that there is no question they are sock puppets. There are about 10 others I have questions about but no proof. I have discussed this with others and here's what we have come up with. 1. We are going to slightly modify the rules as to who is eligible to vote. You now must have signed up for a WSGA account before the first of the month to be eligible to vote. Still no WSGA membership requirement, but that might be coming in the future. By not allowing voters to Register after the voting begins this should solve the sock-puppet problem this month anyway 2. We are going to reset the vote count to zero 3. We are going to email those that voted and ask them to come back and re-vote. 4. The voting will be extended to the 15th this month to compensate for the lost time. Since at least one cache owner has asked to have his cache removed from the contest we have emailed him with our planned course of action and asked if he would consider leaving his cache in the contest. We'll give him time to respond before iniatiating the restart. There is some discussion about changing the voting to only allow WSGA members to vote, as that is the only way we can be sure each person gets only one vote. We realize that will leave some people out so this is still under discussion.
