  6. I'm sensitive to the percieved image of geocachers as a group. I advocate (and do) 'cache in trash out' in discussions and promote it as I write about it. I'm a firm believer in having clear and good intentions. Most geocachers have the simple good intention of geocaching and very few of the imaginary intentions dreamed up by beaureaucrats. I don't like to hear we are denied access to our own lands because someone has to give an permission to a request they have little or no experience in. My hat is off to all the Rangers and custodians of the Lands that are educationg themselves in this great sport. My vote is sometimes because I feel I don't need the permission from an agency to be responsible for my own actions on land I own. I do ask private land owners for permission because THEY own it. We're both in the "leave it and forget it" category--we hope that if somebody takes what we leave, they enjoy it, and we never check back to see if it was traded for an item of equal value--so that aspect isn't an issue. 15T http://www.1800goguard.com I agree with this line of thinking. I occationally leave turquoise stones. Someone could think these have high or low value. I make an ernest attempt to leave something of 'value'. If it's mispercieved, What can I say, I try. In the arts and crafts department, I love leaving my works. but I've run out of bronze chicken bone key rings. I have taken to engraving on copper, the serial numbers from dollar bills and entering them into www.wheresgeorge.com . it works like a travel bug. I do not want any food in my caches. The only exception would be is something like emergenC Vitamin C packets. Simply because we're coming up on dehydration season. It's an excellent electrolyte and comes in a sealed pouch. 9. I keep my phone on one shoulder and the GPS on the other. I bought two of the cell phone pouches at the Big Orange Box, attached them to the shoulder straps of a Camelbak. The phone is there just because I can take it with me. The neat thing is the way the GPS receives signal on top of my shoulder. I'll see if I can get a photo.... KernBob
  10. One of the motto's we ascribe to is 'Cache in, Trash out". I've been slack about collecting garbage on the trail. I am setting a goal for myself to meet. I intend to collect a minimum of 3 lbs on each outing. Picking up garbage is not exactly what drives me to the great outdoors but it certainly will make it more enjoyable if more of us make an effort. I'm planting seeds here. I intend to meet my own commitment no matter what the response to this question is. So what are the rest of you doing to "Cache in, Trash out"? KernBob
  11. Upstream from Alan2, we're getting good cell coverage on the hills. The valleys can be different. I'm not worried about not carrying one with me but I make it a point to have it with me all the time. Harrold has the right idea, he calls and gets information about caches while on the trail. kB

  18. I live and work near Stewart ANG. One of the guys in the Marine Corps that would most likely be informed said he didn't think there was going to be a shift to plastic and consequently the end of the ammo cans. KernBob http://home.hvc.rr.com/musashi/garyu2.jpg

  23. With all the mention of "leave it better than you found it". Does anyone have a source of supply for silica gel desicant? In the NE I think that would be a nice item to leave in a cache. Kernbob http://home.hvc.rr.com/musashi/garyu2.jpg
