  1. Last fall my dog was sniffing in the lead, my wife was 15 ft behind and I was bringing up the rear with my awareness glued to the gps. The dog yelps and runs off shaking his head. I looked at his face and he had two little fang holes. I looked up the trail to see Mrs Tofu 10 feet from a copperhead right on the path. Awfully nice of 'Pete' to warn us like that and all. But if it were not for his sniffing and friendly manner, Mrs Tofu and or I would have literally stepped right on the snake. Pete's recovery was complete and we keep an eye on the trail a bit more cautiously these days.

  2. Hey,

I enjoyed your family's foundry. That was really cool.

Don't worry about the warn meter. That's for posters who are naughty and need a time-out.

I haven't gotten my renewal notice yet. Can't help there.

    Sn :rolleyes::lol: gans

    This is funny,

I was just looking at that cache page and saw your name. I laughed at how you used the two smilies to make "o's".

  3. :D

Greetings troops :D I got my renewal notice and I want to auto renew but I don't see a way to set the option on the 'my account' page. Am I not looking in the right place? :D:D:lol:

Oh Yes, what is the 'warn 0%' :P note that appeared when I posted something on these forums?

  4. I lost my walking stick recently, and have set out to replacing it. I want one that's pretty tall, taller than me even, and I'm 6'4". Most of the staffs/staves/sticks I've found on line have been a maximum of 72", and typically they're under 5'( that's <60" for the math impared).

I'm really not trying to compensate for a short-coming, but I want one that's about 80" long. Is that too much to ask?

I was introduced to the "jo" as in martial arts, some time ago. I went to the local hardware store (not a home depot type store, a REAL haradware store) and bought a 1 1/2" oak curtain rod. I then block planed it down to about an inch in diameter. It works very well as a hiking stick and if need be, it also serves as a 'jo'. My other stick is a simple cane. It looks like i'm having a hard time since it's a cane. I like that I can hook around trees and rocks to pull myself up an incline. it would also come in handy to stop me if I started to slide down the 45 degree shortcut I took last year.

In the woodworking books and magazines in years past, there have been articles on bending wood to make among other things, canes. An 80" cane would look cool!! ;)

  5. For all the night time cachers out there, What are you seeing placed for trail markers? Are people marking the trails for night use?

I have a bundle of reflective 'yarn' that is reflective on both sides.

I tied a piece of it to my car antennae about 3 months ago and it's hanging in there without any signs of degradation.

I've been thinking of doing a virtual night time cache where it has to be dark to see, Something that would look lika a reflective light sculpture in the middle of nowhere.

Anyone else doing anything with reflective materials?

Oh yes, I just remembered. I left a stash of cut yard threads in the cache I posted tonight. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=82844

  6. Seeing you're in phoenix, There is a bronze foundry on McClintock It could still be called Arizona Bronze.

As far as the content, the words sound fine. I think it would be fun to have the geocaching logo in relief so we could take a pencil 'rubbing' of it's image.

Get your self some wax and start doodling out a design.

  7. "Geo Jamboree" sounds like fun. Perhaps we can set a date a little further down the road and attend some of the already planned events.

I am excited about swapping goodies and stories.

For instance I found a supplier of reflective string . Great for night caches.

Anyone interested please continue to post your available dates and this meet just might get rolling.

  8. This is note is a repost from the general forums to better target the local cachers.

“Hey there Hudson Valley(and anyone else) how about we plan a meeting by the train trestle near the kodo cache?

Nice big field, nice big mountain with views.....

It's time we got face to face again.”

The 17th (Saturday) or 18th (Sunday) looks good and about as spontaneous as we could possibly get...

    Where? Kodo Cache

So what to do while we’re there? The usual. Eat, talk, get 'lost' in the woods, and compare notes and toys.

Come prepared to hike if you like. Bring your toys, cameras and your entourage of camp followers. Bring some food and water for yourself too!!

I'll see if I can't dig up a table to lay our personal logo stuff.

I’d like to see if we could do a bit of trading.

Who knows this could have a flea market feel to it.

    Anyone have any alternate suggestions?

    Dates, times, places?

    Happy Trails,

    Kernbob

  9. With the exeption of a bedroll, I pack well prepared for an overnight when I go out on these day hikes for geocaches. I have left small mylar sealed vitamin c / electrolyte packets for cachers that might be experiencing dehydration. To me it's like leaving extra batteries or a sealed bottle of water for a fellow cacher.

I believe that was StayFloopy that enjoyed one of them.

Depending on the condition of the wrapper, and the item up for offer, I might eat it.

I agree, that food in general is not a good idea but mostly because of the way it's sealed (or not sealed). If you leave energy bars or electrolyte packets or water, they're not going to attract the critters. Ammo cans caches can't hurt to seal in the odors.

I do have a question though, hope this is the right place to ask....

Is there a website I can go to to type in a street address and get the approximate coordinates? I've looked on google, but can't seem to find anything.

    Thanks,

  13. Mail it to me and I'll get it into circulation here in the Hudson Valley of New York. We've all heard and seen photo's but no one (that I know of) has seen one.

I'll provide a mailing address if you want to.

I managed to do one cache while I was there and it was a micro cache. (was only cache close enough to hotel as I didnt have my own transportation.) I have given some thought to possibly mailing it to another cacher maybe on the east coast, but think I will just be placing it back in my area soon. Such a long time to hold the coin only to place it a few miles or so away. The coin has traveled with me to Ohio and back then to Indy and back, alot of miles to not go far at all. So look for it to be realeased very soon.
