  2. this man speaks the truth, i have family who live in denville (close to morris) and just a couple months back they had to shoot a black bear who wouldn't go away from a bank
  3. you're just asking to be easy prey for squirrels, everyone knows squirrels can out dodge a bazooka missile.
  4. The Sandia mountains, basically Albuquerque, NM. This was in the east side of the mountains. The west side is a desert until you get up to about 7500 feet. I got 3 caches yesterday one was in about the same area as that picture. desert on one side, a full blown forest on the other side, quite the diversity there, didn't know you guys had that kind of stuff.
  5. Ah. Then you would probably not like my fake rock in a woodpecker hole in a tree. to me that sounds evil , but i'd have to see what kind of hints you would give.
  6. a magnetic key holder thats not stuck to something metal and buried (isn't that against the rules?) i think i would've sealed the deal and bashed my skull against the rocks. theirs challenges, then theirs that lol.
  7. this made me laugh so hard, i think i'd lose my mind if i ever found something like that.
  8. thats some beautiful area right there mac, where is that located?
  9. upload it to image shack if you're having trouble, you can put the things in {img} put url here {/img} (use the non shift brackets on your keyboard) or find a photo host of your choice, photo bucket, image dump, the alternatives are endless. http://imageshack.us/ and its good to hear about the deep foliage cover, the first cache i've been dieing to try out has area's so deep in foliage (its a nature preserve called lenoir nature preserve, i live near the Hudson river) that its actually DARK i mean really DARK and i was so amazed to find this place so close to me, i was starting to think their were no beautiful area's around me that were like this. and to have it in my own backyard, is quite amazing.

  11. a great alternative if you wish to not carry a firearm is also bear mace, bear mace/dog repellent is legal in most states where its illegal to buy pepper spray (or buy it over from another state) here is some of the more common products for bear mace http://www.pepper-spray-store.com/bears.shtml in that following link i really like the Alaska guard, i've heard great things about it plus its the only one thats EPA approved for all types of bears if you're worried about dogs http://www.pepper-spray-store.com/vicious.shtml i suggest the fogger, often when dogs come up on you its either too fast for you to specifically aim or their in stray packs, the fogger gives you the advantage of not having to aim absolutely directly but also has the added benefit of being more effective against multiple dogs. note: never baught from this site so i dont know their service, but these are some of the products i've heard work great, if anything i'd just get the bear mace and use that for general purpose, i dont want to have to carry ten thousand different kinds of pepper sprays. and remember, never spray upwards or upwind.
  12. Snakes have no external ears, but they do have a bone called the quadrate under the skin on the sides of their head which focuses sound into the cochlea. their sense of hearing is most sensitive around sounds which are about 300 hz, the human voice ranges anywhere from 300 hz to 3500, so while its not a common practice, it still helps for snakes but in general while in the bush you should always make your presence known for other wildlife, i always prefer the walking stick method, every few feet a good thud on the ground will do you well.
  13. i've worked with snakes for awhile, one thing you must understand is your level of excitement and how you can react can be the difference between a bite and the snake slithering away. if you've ever held a snake or mouse you'll notice one thing, you can feel the blood rushing through them and vice versa, when i use to hold my mice, if i was excited or just got done running, i could feel their heartbeat as if they were freaking out, if you're excited, they are too, and are often scared, when you keep your cool, they will do the same, whenever i held a snake if i was not calm they would get ancy and start trying to slither out of my hands. when in the bush make sure to make a decent amount of noise, if you're with a friend, elevate your voice slightly above how you normally talk. pick out a walking stick before you head deep in too, one that is at least up to your chest and be sure to make strong hits with it in the ground while you walk, snakes will easily detect this and will know your location so the risk of having a suprise encounter with one will be far less likely. unless you're hunting theirs no reason to be extremely quiet, unless you live in a area with no dangerous snakes.
  14. not demanding, just asking can we get some more pictures of this thing in action? like say for instance, show us how it works under deep foliage with a shot of the skyline covered in heavy foliage, give us an idea of how strong this thing is with/without WAAS enabled Cant wait to get mine in the mail, my old GPS (venture) is so old and the nearest geocache next to me is in very deep foliage lol.
  15. the way our society is currently i think ammo cans have become a bad idea to put out in the bush or near civilization period, i was considering using ammo cans, but i think i'll just keep them at home and start using some other methods, people are just way too paranoid these days.
  16. you wont regret it, i keep a Leatherman on me too (dont know if i remember adding that i just put down a general list) but ever since i got a leatherman i've yet to regret it, i got the Leatherman core BRAND NEW on eBay for 30 dollars, on average it goes for like 70 bucks in the stores, i got such a sweet deal and this thing is QUALITY made, real strong and the tools are great, each Leatherman has different things but the most common ones i've seen for outdoor types are either my Leatherman core or wave, if you bring alot of equipment that has screws and such i also suggest buying the little Screw addition they have available on the leatherman site. as for a knife, Gerber makes some real nice quality ones with good strong rubber grips but you can also buy cheaper knives for around 10-15ish just make sure they have a strong base, if their made of surgical steel be careful with it, they can be quite sharp but you have to take more care of them, one of my favorites for knives to bring is this http://www.mossyoakknives.com/kndetail.asp?mid=325309 the saw can break out some bush if you're having trouble, the guthook if you're fishing and the regular knife for general use, its the knife i often bring out, takes care of pretty much anything, and if i need a backup saw thats where my leatherman core comes in
  17. if i was deep in the bush then i would, but since i live in new york theirs very few area's other then upstate that would make it a option for me, normally a decent sized fold back knife is more then enough to ward someone off or to protect against a stray mutt, i dont have to really worry about cougars, mountain lions, coyotes, bears, etc. but i do visit new jersey quite a bit and where i go theirs quite a bit of black bears, so in those cases, yes it may be an option, but i'm a big rifle person rather then a pistol person. I love ruger 10/22's and marlin model 60's, but those wouldn't do jack against a bear i'd likely recommend a Lever Action rifle if you like to rifle it up like i do, shorter cartridges being at least a 44 magnum, or in a rifle cartridge case a nice 30/30 is good enough to take out deer, it should be good for the average black bear, for something like grizzlies or brown bear...i'd probably go with the classic 30/.06 caliber, one of the most versatile calibers there is. one thing i like about rifles too is it feels alot more outbackish, otherwise i just feel a little too urbanish packing a glock while being out in the great outdoors.
  18. i dont like the ones deep in bush whack territory, ones near trails and paths are always great to do, once it starts going past 300 feet of pure bush i start to get annoyed, and it wouldn't look very good if i went around with a machete.
  19. people need to stop being so judgmental, it may be hard to understand from where you may live, but people throughout this country walk around with weapons as if it was just a simple multi tool for them, some of the cache's could be far out in bush whack country and you dont want to happen upon a black bear or cougar or mountain lion, coyote, wolf, etc and not have one. You've got to realize that most of us here will only ever need a decent knife for general use or light protection, other people live in a world where their are things that can cause them serious harm. i think two guns is over excessive, if anything one decent handgun with an extra clip would do just as well, not that i'm saying they shouldn't, if its legal in their state then let them do so i say. As for me, living in the outskirts of NYC, i mostly have to worry about the occasional mugger or stray fighting dog, being 6 foot 3 and 250 lbs and quite capable of myself with a knife, i dont have a huge reason to carry a gun (even if i wanted to i cant, its illegal here) but i can understand for those people who would want that kind of protection. most of the hatred/uncomfortable feelings come from not truly knowing about firearms, when you learn about them, try them out, you'll see they are just another tool, yes, a dangerous one, but that can be said of knives, box cutters, nail guns and a whole plethora of tools. you also have to realize most of the problems stem from illegal firearms, you know i could've had an illegal pistol since i was in high school? i never took up those offers though, because i plan on becoming a RESPONSIBLE firearms owner and i do things the right way, people who want to be the next Clint eastwood or john wayne buying black market firearms are the ones you need to worry about. just keep this in mind A vote is like a rifle: its usefulness depends upon the character of the user. -Theodore Roosevelt oh, and on the topic at hand. Knife, Multi-tool, GPS, Pen, Bug Spray, i'm not so far out from civilization that i need a first aid kit.
  20. all these bugs/glitchs have me worrying about my unit that should be coming soon as well, if its bad like the others should i contact who i baught it from (offroute.com) or garmin?
  21. would getting an invis shield for the old garmin vista's work on my new vista hcx?
  22. hehe same here and I just turned 36 yesterday! If fact I got the UPS tracking number and I'm sitting in front of the computer refreshing the page every 5 minutes. No not that much seriously but tonight I will lookup again. question for those who currently have it, how much map wise, could you hold on a 2gb sd card? i'm curious to know how much i can cram on there. also i'm upgrading from a etrex Venture i've had for soooo many years,i think i got it like 4-5 years ago, so how does geocaching mode work? does that take up additional space on my SD card? if so, how much?
  23. i ordered mine from offroute.com yesterday and they said they'll ship it out on august 2nd mainly because the 2gb Sdcard is not in stock, otherwise they would've shipped my GPS out on the 31st, so if anyone wants to know i guess their next shipment will go out to everyone around the 31st if you dont want to wait for the Sdcard, but i'm patient, at least i think so... >_>
