  1. Thanks for your reply. I have contacted Magellan and am waiting for a reply. I asked them if they had anything with more detail than WW basemap. I will let you know what they tell me.
  2. Can't help you but I'm in the same situation. I am looking for detailed Topo maps for Afghanistan for a MeriPlat.
  3. Does anybody know if there are topographical maps of the mideast available through Magellan or otherwise? I am going to Afghanistan shortly and could really use them. Thanks.
  4. Just updated my Platinum to version 5.12. I had to re-calibrate the compass but no other problems. Haven't messed with it much yet but the first two things I noticed was that when selecting a user GoTo, it is a new selection called "User Waypoints" instead of just "User". Also, it used to be a thick solid black line showing the straight distance from your present location to the GoTo but now it is more like a thick dash. If anybody knows all the enhancements with the update, please post them. I tried to find out on the Magellan website but had no luck. Thanks.
  5. Did the same thing with my Magellan Platinum. Works well and pretty cheap for the added protection.
  6. Got a great deal on Ebay from Ebay store, The Digital Pavilion. Highly recommend.
  7. I use the stock Meridian case from Magellan. I just wanted to add that my platinum came with a lanyard that screws into the back. I assume the lanyard came from Magellan but I bought it online from The Digital Pavilion. It came with a package deal consisting of the Platinum, Magellan Case, Mapsend Topo, Lanyard, Data Cable, and 4 NIMH rechargeable batteries with charger all for $275 after $75 rebate. Found it on Ebay.
  8. Does anybody know if there is a way to load military grid lines into the GPS unit or onto Mapsend Topo? This would be very useful for use in the military.
  9. I second the Magellan Platinum. Highly recommend. Also like the Mapsend Topo.
  10. I am in the Army and use the Topo maps primarily for that. I wish the detail was a little better but it works pretty good. The additional detail on streets is good too. I like the ability to look up addresses right from the GPS too.
  11. Aha, you are correct. What a relief. Looks like I'm OK afterall. So how do you like your platinum so far? I am extremely please with mine. Loaded the Topo software and the detailed maps are pretty good. Thanks.
  12. I have had a MeriPlat for about two weeks and I noticed that my battery door doesn't seal very tight. I was wondering if this is normal or not. The unit is supposed to be waterproof but how water tight can it be if I can see daylight through the battery door when looking "through" the GPS? Has anybody else noticed this problem? Is there a fix or do I need to contact Magellan? Thanks.
  13. Has anybody seen a "screen protector" on the market to overlay the GPS screen? I have a MeriPlat and it came with a "film" cover over the screen with a sample display. I would like to find the same type of thing but clear to put over the screen to protect it from scratches and dirt. Any suggestions out there?
  14. I got mine primarily for work. I'm in the military and the GPS is a very useful tool. I can still land navigate with a compass and map but the GPS is so much more fun. Not to mention quicker.
  15. For what it's worth I've used the PLGRs and prefer my Meridian Plat. Plugger is large, heavy, needs a special battery and the accuracy is identical. At least when I've used them. The only positive was I didn't have to pay for the PLGR. Just my .02
  16. Thank you all very much for the info. I went ahead and bought a Sandisk Reader. Works great. "Leatherman", your instructions were flawless. There was one thing though, when I clicked the upload to GPS button, it gave me an option to save the region directly to the removeable storage device. Very easy. Now I have my detailed map loaded in my GPS and I am ready to start caching in!!!!
  17. Does anybody know of a way to add Military Grid lines to the Topo map on Magellan's mapsend?
  18. How about this deal: Magellan platinum, Mapsend Topo, PC data cable, GPS Case, and rechargeable NIMH batteries with charger all for 349.00. Then you get the 75.00 rebate so it's really for 275.00. Just ordered it on Ebay from Digital Pavilion. Is this a good deal?
  19. Magellan will allow the rebate from ebay as long as you get a dated sales receipt from the seller.
  20. Need help with data transfer. I am a newbie and am eagerly awaiting delivery of my new Magellan Meridian Platinum, and Topo CD. I just want to get the transfer process straight. Can you tell me if this process is correct? 1. Format blank SD disk in GPS 2. Install Topo CD to computer 3. Select detail area to be used 4. Copy selected map area to disk using reader 5. Put disk back in GPS and select detail map I would also appreciate any other advice for a newbie. I'm looking forward to my first cache hunt.

  24. Ok, first of all, I'm a "newbie". I just purchased a Magellan Meridian Platinum with Topo CD, NIMH rechargeables, case, PC cable, 64mb SD card, and a Sandisk R/W. I am eagerly awaiting for all of it to arrive in the mail. While waiting, I stumbled accross this website. I am also eagerly awating my firs cache hunt. Anyway, I would just like to clarify the process of transfering detailed maps off my computer to my GPS. Is this the process: 1. Load Topo CD. 2. Select area I want in my GPS and copy to SD disk via reader. 3. Simply place disk into GPS and add the details. Do I have to format the disk in the GPS before I load anything on it? I would appreciate any other advice applicable. Thanks.
