  1. Just logged on and, on a whim, tried out this feature again. Discovered that all my previously corrupt routes have been somehow fixed. They can now be used to generate pqs and I can finally get rid of all the superfluous ones! Thanks for the fix !!
  2. Yes, some routes seem to plot out strangely in the display map, but otherwise work correctly. I believe my sample file 2, instead of displaying a route between 2 cities in Western Ohio, shows up as a route between Western Ohio and somewhere well out into the Atlantic Ocean, but still works to generate a pocket query. The trouble ones show up as having zero turns and the display map shows no trackline and is centered on somewhere in Washington state. This thread is concerned with the zero turn type route failure, since as well as being useless, it also seems that they cannot be deleted from your list of routes. In my examples, it is true that the longer file fails and the 2 shorter ones work. However, at 170 miles and only 46 points it ought to be so far away from the 500 mile/500 point limitation noted on the upload page to make the additional 20 or so points between working and non-working points immaterial. Could be wrong on that tho. I do see some much longer routes than my samples in the public area, but it is possible those were generated from gpx information rather than kml.
  3. Since I was really only interested in the rest stop micros, Cracker Barrels, etc. I ended up resorting to scanning along the entire route in geocaching google maps, and bookmarking the ones that seemed interesting At least I could generate a pq from that.
  4. Now for my other question regarding "Find Caches Along a Route". What causes some of the routes to be generated corrupt anyway? Secondarily, is there a way to tell before triggering the upload and save that the kml file is bad in some way? Seeing as I now have 15 of these corrupt routes and no way to delete them, at least having a way to know I'm not about to make more of them would be a good thing IMO. As an experiment, I produced 3 kml files from Google Earth, following exactly the same procedure to make each one. File 1 is a route from Indianapolis, In to Hilliard, Ohio. - a distance of about 170 miles. Files 2 and 3 are the same path broken into 2 parts, Indianapolis to Vandalia OH, and Vandalia OH to Hilliard OH. File 1 initially displays the correct route when previewed on the gpx/kml upload page after clicing the upload button: Distance: 170.6 miles, 46 points. The route produced and saved by clicking Save Selected Routes button shows 170.6 miles, 0 Route Turns, displays a map centered on Snoqualmie Pass, cannot be used to generate a pocket query, and cannot be deleted. It is corrupt. I repeated the upload process one time on this file and produced a second undeletable corrupt route. File 2, Indy -> Vandalia, OH, uploads, displays a correct map and the following attributes: Distance: 111.4 miles, 29 points. The saved route displays correctly on the map and shows 111.4 miles, Route Turns: 29. This route can produce a pocket query, allows changes to the description and keyword fields to be saved, and can, in fact, be deleted. I re-ran the upload and save of this file multiple times and it produced a valid route each time, so the problem does not seem to be a random data transmission error, although it could be related to the length of the file. File 3, Vandalia, OH -> Hilliard, OH, uploads, displays a correct map and the following attributes: Distance: 63.73 miles, 22 points. The saved route displays correctly on the map and shows 63.73 miles, Route Turns: 22. This route is also valid and a pocket query can be produced from it. I will be happy to email these 3 files to anyone working this issue. I would be almost as happy if someone could identify a feature in the kml files or in the preview page/map that could be used as a predictor of success/failure of turning the file into a route.
  5. That works for deleting a pocket query from the pq list, but my problem is in deleting corrupt routes from my route list.
  6. Searched on this topic and while I have seen it mentioned in passing, there does not seem to be any in-depth discussion of this particular problem. I now have 10 routes which do not work and I am unable to get rid of them. For some reason (discussed in threads elsewhere) routes I have generated in Google Earth and saved as kml, initially look good in the map viewer, but after upload show as containing 0 turns, and will not generate PQs. These routes, although they have never been used to create a PQ, do not seem to be deletable. Upon pressing the delete button I get a popup saying this cannot be undone, and pressing OK simply takes me back to the routes page, with the route still there. Changing any of the description fields and pressing save does about the same thing - the changes are not saved. As a result of these just building up, I am reluctant to continue experimenting to find out how to get a working kml file. Two questions: 1) Am I missing something, or am I just stuck with these routes until whatever this bug is gets fixed? 2) Is there a limit to the number of these I can have, and does reaching this limit impact my ability to get normal pqs?
  7. To delete 1 waypoint: - press Menu key - highlight Database and press enter key - highlight User and press enter key - highlight the waypoint you want to delete - press Menu key - highlight Delete WPT - warning message will display - highlight Yes and press Enter key **POOF** it's gone
  8. And I bet they didn't properly rehide the cache either
  9. If you can travel up to the near north suburbs of Chicago you can get This lighthouse. Also nearby and not to be missed for the photo op is the Bahai Temple. Conveniently located nearby is This cache. Enjoy your travels!
  10. So that's what was going on with my ST color ! Drove me nuts and eventually I just shut off the beeper entirely so I wouldn't have to deal with it .
  11. Did the timeshare during last year's visit, but agree it's a good one ! Thanks for the other recommendations.
  12. I will be in Westerville as well that weekend, visiting my wife's family, but will be arriving late morning - early afternoon of the 2nd. Will PM some info, maybe I can join you later in the afternoon.
  13. Hmm, strange, the icons on the toolbar of my copy do display hints when hovered on. Might be something in the prefereces to control that. Anyway, GSAK will export a cachemate pdb file directly. On mine, it's the icon with the globe. You can also get there by selecting menu options "File/Export/Cachemate PDB File". Clyde has also made this nifty program CM2GPX which will convert your cachemate pdb file, with your logging info entered, back into a GPX which you can then sync back into GSAK and have your logs filled out and ready to send to GC (which can also be done right from the GSAK log edit screen). Best $20 I have ever spent on software.
  14. By any chance have you checked the clock when unable to find satellites? My ST color would do this occasionally and I always found that the date had reset to several years ago. Speculate this was due to either power interruption or just being too cold when I left it outside in the car during the cold of winter. In any case, just setting the date to be correct always brought it back in just a couple of minutes.
  15. Hi - Am trying to get a find for the locationless cache Where's in a Name. For this I need someone near Manchester, Liverpool, Wallasey, or anywhere else along N53 24.89x to take their picture with GPSr displaying that latitude. Then we both get to log a find for this cache.
  16. You ought to be able to tell if it's the unit itself or just the map for the area by taking the unit to a nearby benchmark and seeing if the coordinate numbers are in agreement. If so, the GPSr itself is working fine and you just have the misfortune of living in an area where your maps have bum information. If the numbers do not match up and you have good satellite visibility (5-6 with strong signal) then you ought to have a pretty good case for unit malfunction. Alternately, you could make a "do it yourself" benchmark by using another GPSr or three as references.
  17. There are quite a number of memorable caches that would doo quite well for marking a milestone. Putt-Putt Geocaching comes to mind as does Beverly. You might want to check the Midwest Grail thread that ran in this forum some time back.
  18. I have seen this a few times on my sportrac color after leaving it overnight in my car. Upon looking further I have found that the time and date have been lost. Setting the date and reinitializing brought it back each time.
  19. Version 4 did it for me. Neat puzzle. Maybe as I pass by on my way to Columbus this July.....
  20. A quick check shows about 30 caches within 5 miles of McCormick Place. Many are virtuals good for a sightseeing expedition.
  21. Hi - I am looking for someone who would be interested in partnering with me on a sister cities cache. By posting photos of each other to the cache, we would each get to log a find. Pisa, Italy is a sister city to my home of Niles Illinois USA, so I am looking for someone who could take a photo of themselves there (maybe with the Tower? We have a 1/4 size replica here - thus the sister city relation). For details on the sister city cache see Sisters Thanks
  22. I follow pretty much the same process as above, but once I am viewing the current GC page, I click on the 'download gpx' and import it into GSAK. GSAK then sets the archive flag automagically and I have the added benefit of storing the last few logs and usually the admin's note archiving it into the GSAK database. Edit to note that I only do this for caches that I have found. Typically, before adding a new pq to GSAK, I delete all entries for caches that I have not looked for. This pretty much guarantees that the data on unfound caches is current.
  23. My thoughts: Each time I hunt a cache, I am adding to its history. If I go out 4 times, each of those visits is part of the story of that cache, and I feel that is part of my obligation to the hider - to let him/her share in my experience at their hide. Otherwise, on that fourth visit I deny the hider the opportunity to cheer with me that I persevered though multiple non-finds and finally found it, or, if it comes out DNF as well, the chance to shake their head and say "what a loser, can't he figure out that it's right under that obvious pile of bark?" or pat themselves on the back for a cache well hidden.
  24. Dosido has it right. I have a ST Pro and currently have 3 non-contiguous regions loaded (I think that's the max, regardless of memory used). After creating the regions in Mapsend you check the ones you want to upload to the GPS on the region window and select upload. This process does wipe out any regions previously loaded, so any you want to keep have to be selected so they re-load.
  25. Cachemate for the Palm can also do projections in feet.
