  1. 2010.10 123 maps 1133.0 MB 2010.30 136 maps 1244.5 MB This includes Mexico Yep! You are correct. I only need 2010.3 and the topo 24K. The old stuff is just that. Thanks for your help.
  2. Thanks! Especially for the advice about the card reader. I didn't know I could do that. I don't have access to my computer with mapsource right now. How do you transfer to card after you select the maps you want?
  3. Thanks. The reason I was thinking about installing CNNA 2008 is because in MapSource the vs. of CNNA 2010.3 shows several cities in the left hand pane when I select maps. It does not show each state. For example it has Eugene, OR and Portland OR but not Oregon like the 2008 software does. It was a free upgrade. Do you think it is complete? It's about a gig when you select it all, similar to the 2008.
  4. I have spent a lot of hours trying to transfer the entire CNNANT2008, the entire CNNANT2010.3, and portions of Topo 24k West maps in a map set from MapSource to my Vista HCx with a 4gb card. Everytime after going through creating index then creating mapset, I get an error message and no maps are installed to Visat. I copied the message to my clipboard and sent it to Garmin but I'm wondering if anyone might be able to help since they are currently closed? Any ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. This is the clipboard contents: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no" ?> <ErrorReport xmlns="http://www.garmin.com/xmlschemas/ApplicationErrors/v1"> <Error> <Exception> <SourceCodeLocation> <SourceFileName>GDX_GPSXFERTHREAD.CPP</SourceFileName> <SourceFileLine>670</SourceFileLine> </SourceCodeLocation> </Exception> <Application> <Name>MapSource</Name> <Build> <Version> <VersionMajor>6</VersionMajor> <VersionMinor>15</VersionMinor> <BuildMajor>7</BuildMajor> <BuildMinor>0</BuildMinor> </Version> <Type>Release</Type> <Time>Sep 21 2009, 15:33:52</Time> <Builder>sqa</Builder> </Build> <LanguageID>1033</LanguageID> <PartNumber>006-A0041-00</PartNumber> </Application> <Computer> <OperatingSystem>Windows XP Service Pack 3</OperatingSystem> <Processor>x86, Processor Level: 6, Processors:2, Model: 28 Stepping: 2</Processor> <RamSize>1036164</RamSize> </Computer> <Time>2009-12-06T06:27:51Z</Time> </Error> <Error> <Exception> <SourceCodeLocation> <SourceFileName>GDX_GPSXFERTHREAD.CPP</SourceFileName> <SourceFileLine>670</SourceFileLine> </SourceCodeLocation> </Exception> <Application> <Name>MapSource</Name> <Build> <Version> <VersionMajor>6</VersionMajor> <VersionMinor>15</VersionMinor> <BuildMajor>7</BuildMajor> <BuildMinor>0</BuildMinor> </Version> <Type>Release</Type> <Time>Sep 21 2009, 15:33:52</Time> <Builder>sqa</Builder> </Build> <LanguageID>1033</LanguageID> <PartNumber>006-A0041-00</PartNumber> </Application> <Computer> <OperatingSystem>Windows XP Service Pack 3</OperatingSystem> <Processor>x86, Processor Level: 6, Processors:2, Model: 28 Stepping: 2</Processor> <RamSize>1036164</RamSize> </Computer> <Time>2009-12-06T17:52:10Z</Time> </Error> </ErrorReport>
  5. Thanks. I'm wondering how much room I should leave available on the card for the storage of tracks? Can a lot of tracks be stored if I left say 200mb free?
  6. Thank you. One more question: Does anyone have a recomendation for how much room to leave available on a 4GB card for saved tracks, etc.? I have no idea how much room they take up. I am using for SAR and need to be able to save tracks.
  7. I sent my Vista HCx in to be exchanged for a refurbished model. Previously I had City Navigator 2008 NT installed on it and my computer in MapSource. When I went to the MyGarmin site I was offered a one time update to City Navigator 2010. I downloaded it and installed to my computer. In MapSource I now have City Navigator 2008 NT and City Navigator 2010.3 NT. I have three questions: Do I need to create a Mapset that includes both versions of City Navigator to get the most complete coverage? I also have Topo 2008 and Topo US West 24k. Is there any benefit to including both of these in the mapset? It's been awhile since I have used MapSource and after a couple of long tests it appears that I can only transfer one mapset to the Vista. It apparently erases the previous mapset. I assume I have to create one mapset with both the City Navigator Maps and Topo maps I want included and transfer this to Vista. Is this correct? Thanks for any assistance.
  8. I already have a Vista HCX but was thinking about getting this to use with my mobile phone. I know that the phone would have to have software. Is there any comparison as far as the receiver goes? I'm just wondering about the hardware only. Here are the specs for the keychain: GPS Specification: Chipset SiRF Star III. 20 Channels All-In-View tracking. Protocol: NMEA 0183/GGA, GSA, GSV, RMC, VTG, GLL. Baud Rate: 57,600 bps. Frequency L1, 1,575.42 Mhz. Tracking Sensitivity: 159 dBm.. Position deviation*: 10 meters 90%. 2D RMS 1-5 meters. Velocity: 0.1 m/sec.. Effective temperatures: Storage: -400C +700C. Working: -200C +600C. Air humidity: 5 90% Internal Ceramic Patch antenna. MMXC connection for external antenna. Thanks!
  9. Thanks! Didn't realize I could do that. So how much can I put on one 2GB card? All of both products?
  10. I purchased a Vista HCX, Topo 2008, and CN 2008 NT. We are taking a trip soon from Oregon to Idaho, Utah, and Colorado. We want to use CN to find fuel, food, etc., and our way there and back. We will be doing some hiking and moutain biking so we might need the topo too. I have tried loading a bunch of topos for Oregon and the state of Oregon from CN into a map set and transfered it. It took forever! I need to turn off City Navigator when we are out on trails to see more detail. Seems like it would be a real pain to have to turn off the topo maps as there are so many! What would you all recommend for loading before our trip. Should we just take the maps near where we are going? Should we use two cards? I have two 2GB cards but it's kind of a pain to switch. I'd love to just have the whole U.S. topo and CN on one card if I could figure out how to manage it. Any advice would be appreciated.
  11. So I'm ready to buy topo 2008. Do I need to look for NT version? I only see the North America 2008 DVD. Is that the one that I need for my Vista HCX? I also am looking for dash mount. It's a toss up between Garmin and RAM. Looks like the RAM needs to be screwed in. Which would you recommend? Thanks!
  12. I would say that the WAAS bug has been corrected based on my numerous power cycles, but I could be wrong. If the WAAS bug didn't bother/affect you (as it didn't really affect me since I seldom had it enabled), I would stay clear of v2.30 and just stay at v2.20 just because of the annoyance of this new persistent 'calibrate compass' hint/feature. I don't know if I made it clear that it comes up even if you have the compass turned off. I upgraded this morning and have powered on and off several times. I have yet to get the compass calibration message?
  13. I just bought the Vista HCx and need to get City Nav for a trip in one month. Historically what has Garmin done as far as discounts or free upgrades when a new version becomes available say within 30 days of purchase?
  14. Ut oh...... If the unit can't detect when you are standing still, then a lot of features on the unit will be worthless like moving MPH, moving distance, trip odometer and the arrow bouncing around when you are standing still. Let it sit, set the odometer to zero and see if it remains at zero or slowly moves. If it slowly moves, that's a real major bug in my book. I left it on for 20 minutes sitting on my desk and it didn't move. Should I try this test longer?
  15. It sure does in my Legend Cx - On the Marine settings you should have ANCHOR ALARM, OFF COURSE ALARM, then SPEED FILTER which can be set to AUTO, USER OR OFF. Make sure it is AUTO. If this doesn't exist in the H series, Garmin's got some major problems. My new Vista HCx does not have that setting under marine. It only has Anchor Alarm and Off Course.
  16. "We can look at the area in question, but we don't know you area the way you do,. The best thing is to use Garmin's Map view on their website to find the area you are looking for. go here and click the Topo US 2008 viewer in the upper right hand corner." Thanks! That's just what I needed. It doesn't have what I'm looking for in that area but now I can look at others thanks. Nice of them to let you try before you buy.
  17. Can someone with the new Topo 2008 look at the Oregon coastal areas for me before I purchase it and let me know if they would recommend it. There is the Oregon Dunes area between Coos Bay and Florence as well as many many numbered logging roads on the hills between Coos Bay and Reedsport and I5 that will give me an idea of how detailed it is for Oregon. I'm particulary interested in the logging roads and many back roads between Hwy. 101 and I5. Also interested in the elevation scales. Do you think it would be good to buy if it were to be used in these areas? Thanks
  18. I found a solution using google. This software works great. Free trial is available. http://franson.com/gpsgate/
  19. I know there are more than a hundred posts on usb and serial setups, but I have searched and can't find the info I need. I just purchased a Vista HCx and I'm new to GPSr and Geocaching in general. I own Microsoft MapPoint 2006 and I think I could have a very nice setup if I could get the two talking to each other. Microsoft MapPoint 2006 says I have Com 3 and Com 8 available but it doesn't see the Vista HCx connected by USB. Can someone tell me what to do or exactly what I need to purchase to make this combo work. Thanks.
  20. I am waiting for my new Vista HCX and was wondering if I could pick up a copy the older topo software off ebay for it? Just trying to save a little cash for a bit. I'm thinking of doing the same thing with City Navigator 8 when the new version comes out. What do you think? Is there typically a huge difference in the newer versions of this map software?
  21. -- I ordered Monday evening for $235. My order said processing until this afternoon when I got an email about it being shipped. Tracking shows that it was actually shipped yesterday and that I will recieve it tomorrow.
  22. I just ordered a Vista HCX from Walmart.com the other day. I have never used a GPSr before. I've been reading a lot about them but have some questions. It seems that I might need to buy the topo, city navigator, blue water, and inland lakes to cover all my activities. Will this thing do much out of the box with the built in maps? Could I program in a trip to another state and have it tell me when to make turns and such? I'll see for myself soon but while I wait could someone give me some idea of how they work when you don't spend a lot on maps. I noticed that the topo maps come in a couple of vs. The parks one is a larger scale but I guess it doesn't cover as much? The only thing listed in Oregon is Crater Lake. Does that mean that it only works in that area? Thanks just trying to learn a bit before I get it.
  23. Mine is still processing and it has been about 42 hours. I'm anxious for it to ship too. I've never had a gpsr before or even used one. I'm kind of excited about trying geocaching.
