    Travel Bug

I moved a TB from NY to FL a few weeks ago. I noticed in the Cache log that someone had taken it, but never logged the TB possesion. Would it be propper for me to notify them to do so? I am not the TB owner.
  2. I have sucessfully salvaged scratched disks by polishing the surface with a little bit of toothpaste (mild abrasive). Once it's readable I'd immeadiately make a backup copy or two. FWIW I always make backup cd's and leave the original in a safe place.
  3. I have the dashboard mount and it works great. I also use the handlebar mount on my mountain bike. The same back cover fits both.
  4. All the software mentioned (and I'm sure others) will get your position data from your GPS'r and update it to you laptop as you travel.
  5. The NG Topo maps will only work on your PC. If you get a USB to Serial adapter you will be able to transfer waypoints between the NG software and your GPS, not not the actual maps. Mapsource maps are the only ones that can be transfered to the GPS.
  6. I got one 2 years ago from BUY.COM. I just did a search they have them starting as low as $16.94
  7. Some further details on my situation. I'm using a Garmin E-Trex Vista. I have currently have saved tracks set to auto, and track log set to auto. I noticed when looking at the tracks in Mapsource, that they often hop around, especially during stops. During the course of a hike satellite reception may come and go, and I'm sure accuracy varies quite a bit. What would be the best settings for best logging accuracy under those conditions?
  8. Also got a snow flurry arounf noon on 10/23 at the top of Jackie Jones Mtn in Harriman park. Saw lots of snow on 10/6 at the top of Little Whiteface Mtn, near Lake Placid.
  9. But there was even the 2.5 mile discrepancy between the trip odometer reading and the mileage shown by the track log saved.
  10. I went on a hike today. The odometer on my GPS showed a little about 8.6 miles. The saved track measured 11.3 miles. Mapping the course (not saved track) on a topo map tracing the trails as shown on the map measured only 7.48 miles. What would be the most accurate measurment of the distance covered on this hike?
  11. I have an Garmin E-Trex Vista, and it can only use Garmins Mapsource Maps. The detail available in their topo maps is not very good. The best software topo maps I have found are the topo maps sold by National Geographic, and while you can transfer waypoints and tracks to and from a GPS using their software, you can't display their map on the gps.
  12. Just curious. How is the life of rechargeable AA's compare to alkaline batteries. I know that an alkaline is 1.5 v, compared to a rechargeables 1.2v. Does this shorten the use time of the GPS on a set of batteries? I know the set up menu on my Vista lets me tell it what kind of batteries I'm using.
  13. For long trips in the car you may also want to add a power inverter to power the laptop from your cigarette lighter.
  14. I purchased mapsource topo about a month ago and updated to the latest 4.13 version on line. Now I first started playing with it, and downloading maps to my gps. When I download a topo map, shouldn't I be seeing the same elevation lines, trails, roads etc that are on the computer map?
  15. I just purchased Mapsource Topo. The detail is incredibly poor, but thats another story. My question is how can I get the program to look for the maps on my hard drive instead of on the cd. I'd rather not have to carry the cd around when I want to use this program.
  16. I had the same problem when I bought my HP laptop. No serial port. I picked up a cheap adapter at buy.com (around $20) and it works great. The only problem I've found is that the com port changes depending on which of the 3 usb ports I hook into.
  17. Duracells have the longest life. Thats what we use at work for wireless microphones. Procell brand is the same as duracell.

If you download waypoints into EasyGPS, then you should be able to move the waypoint set into DeLorme Topo using GPSBabel (I'm not 100% sure the Topo protocol is one that GPSBabel handles, but it does a lot of them). Otherwise, routing it through your GPSr would be necessary...no direct way to put them into DeLorme products that I know of. There may be some way to generate a file that DeLorme can import, but I would not be well-versed enough to describe it if it exists. Max Often wrong but seldom in doubt Thats it. Saving the easygps .loc files and generating something that the Delorme Topo 3d software can read. I looked at GPSBabel but didn't see a format that Delorme's software would recognize. Guess I'll have to go through the GPS for now. Dennis
  19. Any one have an easy way of saving waypoints into Delorme Topo? Right now I'm either copying and pasting, or I'd have to upload to my GPS and then download from there. Thanks Dennis

Do any of the units us USB to hook up to the computer or do they all make use of a serial cable? Larry Warrn My Garmin vista came with a serial cable. I'm able to use it with a usb to serial adapter.
