  1. you don't have to purchase any... check out the free Ibycus USA Topo at http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/19/
  2. Here's my gun of choice. i mostly just use it as a keychain but you never know.
  3. they're made for joggers and cyclists but they're good enough for caching. there is no basemap and you're not able to upload a map on one but other than that they're ok. just figure out how to load waypoints of caches on them and they should lead you in the right direction.
  4. agreed it's too much of a hassle to search over a large area with few caches. much better now. i'm heading out to central america soon and was hoping to find a few caches out that way. it was way too hard searching on the 15 mile maps but works well now. just takes a little while to load. no complaints. tbs

  6. i don't like that it won't any show caches with the map zoomed out to over 15 miles. in the cities where there are a lot of caches it's no big deal but when poking around out of the way places it becomes too much of a hassle to browse over a large area. for that reason i like to old map better.
  7. A*. almost makes up for the time i thought i knew better than my compass and ended up wandering around lost in the Chilean Andes for a day or so. exhaustion and dehydration can mess with your head.
  8. i wouldn't be complaining about going for a walk in the rockies. i don't mind getting a DNF if the search takes me to some place of interest i wouldn't have otherwise visited. that being said i have no interest in the parking lot micros that seem so popular here, although they are easy enough to spot and avoid with a quick look at google maps (nothing against them existing for those who like nosing around parking lots. i just think it's a waste of time) the caches i hate most are the ones in obvious cruising parks. looking for a cache amongst empty bottles of ky jelly and spent contraceptives (although preventing pregnancy is generally not their purpose) to have a couple fat, middle aged naked guys come running out of the bushes as you approach ground zero can be a low point of a caching trip.
  9. My complaint: ripping off terminology from lousy children's books. Muggle .... the first and last time i will ever use that word. if it was a 10 year old that came up with it it would be kinda cute once or twice, but anyone over the age of 12 that speaks to others over the age of 12 using language like that i'd say is either seriously intellectually or emotionally stunted. possible replacement terms: -infidel -heathen -outlander ps i don't need it pointed out that my id is lifted from a novel usually read in middle school.
  10. if i'm going to an area near a river or creek i bring some sandals for walking across the water in.
  11. loaded on my mp3 player: misfits turbonegro dwarves crimson ghost alice donut exploding hearts backyard babies dirtys.... plus some obscure stuff.
  12. i just signed in with my junkmail address. they don't check though so you can just make one up. that way the men in black won't know it's you.
  13. So do you carry a gun? -No, of course not. What kind? not applicable Have you ever used it? - i have shot someone else's once. i was hitch hiking in alaska when the girl giving me a ride handed me a gun and told me if i was bored i could start shooting at things. i stuck my head out the window and fired a few rounds at what looked like it might be fun to shoot a hole through but then got bored of that. On animals? - i hope not. didn't mean to if i did. here's a fun test for y'all. anyone outside of the USA will probably be severely disadvantaged. http://www.okcupid.com/tests/take?testid=1824039521290665504 i'm 17% gun nut.
  14. i like to grab the good stuff and leave such treasures as: a broken crayon a half used eraser a hand full of grass (the kind you can easily pull from the ground, not the kind you're thinking off) discarded pieces of twine a pen that doesn't work anymore maybe 2 or 3 random cards from a deck a nice looking rock from near the cache site you know. things i'm sure others will enjoy.
  15. a few needles a few high school kids hitting a bong a couple naked guys in the bushes. and a dead body being pulled from a creek. i guess it's not illegal to be a dead person but you may not be able to leave one lying around.
  16. was placing a cache back when a i saw a couple of naked guys running out of the woods together. don't know if they were doing "the nasty" though as they were long gone before there was time to ask.
  17. Isn't the point of the crosses to put something up so that people will stop and read? Seems like that's what putting a geocache there will accomplish as well... as long as the crosses aren't being physically disturbed or altered, I can't see a problem. it might even get visits from people who would take the time to post a photo of the of the memorial on an internet forum with a review expressing the opinion that the site shows a lack of tastefulness. i'm sure the Lewis family would approve.
  18. with an almost infinite amount of potential places for a cache, why would someone choose to place one in an area that's only characteristic is that it is a place that draws bereavement from people who lost a loved one? it seems the idea was to make people aware of what happened so i don't think the intentions are bad, just unrealistic. a significant number of geocachers don't seem to have any interest or sensitivity for the areas where they are caching. the goal is merely to get another smiley face and get out. i don't think those who placed the memorials would appreciate the site being used by some as place to score points in a game.
  19. the ECT is great. i walked from st john's to witless bay a couple summers ago (would've gone longer but had to get to a wedding). hangin out around the spout and watching the eagles and whales was one of the cooler hiking experiences i've had. this was well before i got into caching so i didn't look for any along the way. newfoundland should be a unesco world heritage site just for the people alone. super friendly, but don't let them screech you.
