  1. I was using IE a few years ago and I got browser hijacked . At the time I was using IE and getting a few virus's each week . I ended at spywareinfo.com I followed there suggestions to avoid future problems that among other things included the use of Firefox. I can't remember the last time I had spyware or mailware problems. I probably get 3 or 4 virus's a year if that. As has been mentioned there are a bunch of add on flash killers and what not that let you choose what you want to see. I'm very happy with it .
  2. I have a Vista HCX a while back mine was doing the same thing can't remember if it was with2.6/2.6 or 2.7/2.7 . After talking to Garmin they told me to do a cold start and let it re initiate itself . That seemed to work on mine. I can't remember exactly how I did it . I think while on the satellite start page I hit the menu button then "new location" and "automatic" . maybe someone else knows for sure. Now I have 2.8/2.8 and it seems much faster. KH
  3. Updated my friends last night from 2.4/2.4 to 2.6/2.6 and now it's freezing up. I don't know much at this point. He was leaving on a trip and I updated it for him. His didn't have a SD card in it but some how I loaded 8 way points. Not sure how it did that or if that may be why it's hanging up. I'll have to mess with it when he gets back. I had him pull the batteries out over night and put his SD card in. If that didn't work he was going to restore the factory settings. If that doesn't work I would think we'll have to do a hard reset. Thats about all I can think of .He has no maps of any kind installed so I know it's not that. Hopefully someone here has some Ideas on whats going on. KH
  4. I sat in a boat in Canada and drifted all the way across a lake with a 76 CSX and it was registering .4 to .6 mph all the way. My friend uses a garmin 12 we troll for hours keeping our speed at 1.4 mph. I used a Magellen explorist 600 and was able to register .4 to .6 mph over distance . I'm not sure about error at low speed but any gps should be capable of this. To be honest about it I'm dumbfounded anyone would release a gps that wasn't capable of it. I'm not a geocacher so I can't speak of that, but as an hunter/fisherman it's a HUGE inconvenience as at times the difference in success trolling is .5 or less of a mph in speed. The only reason I haven't sent it back is Garmin has assured me they are aware and working on it. It's small size, light weight and one handed operation make it ideal for me. I'm still weighing the idea of sending it back for a 60CSX.
  5. It wouldn't update to gps version 2.4 for me either just the software says 2.4 . I talked to Garmin today the guy couldn't see any new hardware updates for the older versions but he said that was a newer version of the GPS chipset . My issue with the Vista HCX has been it won't consistently register speeds less than 2.0 mph. Gallet have you tried to see if the new version will register a speed less than 2.0 MPH for any length of time ? I'm pretty sure when they get it to do that it will solve the odometer issue's.
  6. I talked to Garmin today too, the guy I talked to assured me they are aware of the problem and are working on it and at some point it will be fixed. I seen in another post the new Vistas HCX's are gps version 2.4 and software version 2.4 . I ask the guy at Garmin about that but he didn't have any info on what the difference is. Mine is gps version 2.3 , software version 2.4. I'm interested to see if the gps 2.4 version has addressed this issue at all.
  7. Must have been something to do with like a 2d lock or something. It works fine outside , inside it shows I have a lock it will give a distance to the waypoint when I hit Goto then if I power down and restart theres no navigation info. Outside I hit goto it will give me a distance to the waypoint if I power down and restart all the navigation info is still there( the distance to the waypoint) . Anyway its working now. Now if they will only get it to register speed under 2 mph.
  8. Just got a Vista HCX kinda perplexed by this . I go in and pick a way point I created to navigate to . If I power the unit down it when I start it up it doesn't remember what way point I was going to. I have to go in a reselect the way point I was navigating to. I can't seem to find a setting for this. I can't believe I have to recall the way point I'm navigating to every time I start the unit. Is that right ? Thanks KH .
  9. For what its worth I just got the vista hcx updated to firmware 2.4 and it will not register a speed unless you are going over 2 mph. Very hard to believe. I called Garmin to see if there working on it and the guy said he wasn't even aware it wouldn't do that. I'm going to keep it I'm hope a future firmware will address it. Not holding my breath though. KH
  10. I keep hearing about the problem with it not registering the right distance of travel unless you travel over 2.2 MPH . If I was to walk 1 mph would it tell me that accurately? I know the 76 csx will. It doesn't matter if the distance traveled is off . I want to use it for trolling and need to be going 1.1 mph . I ordered one from REI yesterday but if it won't register real low speed I need to cancel that order . Thanks KH
  11. I'm trying to decide on one of these 76csx, 60csx or Vista hcx and I want to get some opinions. I've read all the posts and the +'s and -'s of each unit. Any of them seem to be able to do what I want so I really can't make a wrong choice but I want the best unit for what I want to do. I'll explain my needs and my thoughts then wait to see what everyone thinks. I don't Geo cache . I plan on getting the topo and the mapping for it. 1. The unit will be used for hunting and scouting 75% of the time. For this reason size and weight is somewhat of a issue. I have given the edge to the 60 or the vista here. 2. About 15% of the time for fishing. This will not require blue map or what ever it's called I just need to mark waypoints at critical fishing spots. Any of them would work well here. 3. About 10% for map and road travel. Because of the bigger screens I would say the 76 0r 60 here. I have looked at and held all three, but I wasn't really concidering the Vista at that time . I like the button layout of the 76 better then the 60. I haven't worked the buttons on the Vista so I can't compare it. I like the fact that the 76 lays better on flat surfaces than the 60. I don't like the size of the 76. I'm kinda leaning toward the Vista but I have a couple of questions. Can you opperate the Vista with one hand if so which hand do you use. How hard is it to highway navigate with it. Is it hard to get at the buttons and is it difficult to see the screen compared to the other two? Thanks in advance KHH
  12. I'm going to update to a newer g.p.s. I pretty much have already decided to get either a 60csx or a 76csx . I had a chance to work with a Magellan Explorist 600. The file system it uses for POI’s really works well for me . I really like the 600 because I can turn on or off what ever POI / way points I want and I can make a file for each trip. But the rechargeable battery is useless to me and it didn’t seem to lock on the sat’s to fast. I have read a lot about the 60 & 76 but I’m unable to get a definitive answer on a couple of things. 1. Can I use Map Quest or some other program to create a POI file for way points for a specific trip . Example would be a POI file named “ Canadian Fishing trip” with all my way points stored in it. 2. Can I turn off specific POI’s or way points. Example would be if I didn’t want the screen all muddled could I turn off just gas station POI’s . Or could I turn off just my “Canadian Fishing Trip” Way point/POI’s ? I know I can do a de clutter but that seems to shut everything off. Thanks KH
