  1. If bearings are azimuths why do we need two. Bearings are defined by a direction, NE, SE, SW and NW and run from 0° to 90°. Azimuths (in America) are nowadays from the North 0° to 359° 59' 59". One problem with Azimuths is that there are still millions of people in the USA who can't do math. Maybe AZ=330° is N30°W, but what is 329° 52' 52"?
  2. I just went to the MS MapPoint Site. It states that Lat/Long is either decimal degrees or dd.mm.ss............. If you are entering 42.33.75 you will either get an error message or be in the wrong place (42.33.45). You could convert a file worth of points from geocache (dd.mm.mmm) to either dd.ddddd or dd.mm.ss by using Corpscon a free program on the NGS website.
  3. Bluff, since you are in West Illinois, I converted these from West Zone State Plane to Nad 27 and located on a Quad sheet. They appear to be on the north end of a pond in Section 24, T8N, R10W of the 3rd PM, in Jersey County, IL. Correct? As a Surveyor we report numbers like these on DOT drawing mostly.
  4. Rich and Ray: I too am surprised it's not damaged. It is the South 1/4 corner of Section 15, North 1/4 corner of Section 22. I didn't wait for it to all load, so I don't know what Township or Range. These didn't have coordinates on them when they were placed, therefor no way to index them other than the S/T/R. We refer to these as County Marks even though they were set under contract with the federal government.
  5. Hey Dave, DE7339, DE7297, DE7296 and DE7266 are in Stephenson County not Winnebago County. Not major, as I could still find them, but dadgum inaccurate. Ayers knew they were working for Winnebago County when they did the work, so obviously all 100+ they set were in Winnebago, right???
  6. Zhanna, I read your statement that the unstamped disk was 0.25 miles off the coordinates. The coordinates are scaled +/- 180 meters = +/- 0.22 miles. Your mileage may vary.If you want, you can report your consumer grade coordinates and NGS will make note of them. This will help others down the road, however a vertical disk with not stamping or coordinates is pretty meaningless in todays world.
  7. Let's try that again, shall we. Even after an evening drinking, .01 miles = 52.8 feet!!!!!!
  8. I've never seen coordinates in Lat/Deg/Sec before. The coordinates here are not Deg/Sec. They are degrees-minutes.decimal minutes (DD MM.mmm). Multiple the .mmm by 60 and you get seconds. 42D 28.500M = 42D 28M 30S. If you need seconds to decimal minutes then divide by 60.
  9. Catcher, I have all the quads for 8 states, who will be first to volunteer to do all my other work while I glean triangles off these nearly 10,000 quads!!!!! On another score, scaled coordinates are +/- 6 seconds. Here at 42D north, thats 600 feet. If someone takes $400 GPSR and looks, he is ON, but not really!!!!
  10. Very interesting. My PC found one last week and we haven't been able to get any info on it. I think I'll try the State Library.
  11. The posts I set today were just around a foot. One point, just a year old, the post is now mowed to the ground. It took me an hour to find it. Most of the new posts with a front and back face the way the crew thinks most people will see it readily. The twelve I set were facing the roads, behind the point.

In Wisconsin the DOT requires disks in new bridges, but doesn't always stamp them. Could be that type.
  13. Your problem could be with the HotSync. You need to turn it off to free up the comm port in XP.
