  1. I'm just a high school kid. I'll be a senior this year. After high school I'm looking into an education in computer engineering or something like that. Along the lines of computers in any case... quote:Dan: Animator on video games. Our latest one is wrapping this week!I'm so jealous... That would be so awesome.
  2. I go to garage sales. My friends and I have an entire box full of cache goodies that we've gotten from garage sales.
  3. One of the best cache containers I've found was a microcache. It's hard to explain... It was a perscription bottle inside a large, hollowed-out tree stump/limb, which had a swiveling top to it covered the opening so that when it was set down, it simply looks like a small treestump. Like I said... hard to explain, but maybe you get it
  4. I went on a camping trip with a church group by the Sisters Mountains in Oregon and a few of us (the ones that were up to it) headed out to climb the "South Sister" (which, according to my GPS, had a 10,300 foot peak) It took us 7 hours to get to the top from our campsite. When we finally reached the peak I enjoyed the amazing view for a while. When I looked down to the ground a few feet below, I saw a little metal plaque and thought "Hey, that looks like those benchmark things!" Sure enough it was one of them We then hiked back, which took another 5 hours. 12 hours of hiking!! I'm still recovering That was my first benchmark find. It was certainly a nice surprise.
  5. I was also camping. I didn't hear about it until yesterday. It's interesting to see what's happened while you're gone.
  6. Alright thanks a lot. I'm actually looking into simply selling my Sportrak Map on ebay as soon as I get it and upgrading to a Sportrak Pro.
  7. quote:Originally posted by TotemLake:Bear in mind if you use the full 6MB, you will not have any room to save your waypoints/tracks. Cheers! TL I can't imagine those taking up very much space at all though. Has anyone ever used the Topo maps from Magellan? I think I'll be getting that instead of the Streets & Destinations. I don't think I need to know where local golf courses are located
  8. quote:Originally posted by nincehelser:I recently saw an add for a digital camera with a display that required no backlighting. Apparently they were LEDs, not LCDs. Since they emit their own light, no backlight was needed, and there was much less power draw. Has anyone seen one of these screens? Are they easily viewable in daylight? George I'm not an expert on the topic, but every colored, back-lit device (digital cameras, hand-held games, ect...) I've ever used had horrible battery life.
  9. quote:Lexar just releasing a 4 GB Compact Flash card*Jaw drops* So... much... space... You could map the whole word out on your GPS...
  10. I've just purchased a Magellan Sportrak Map, which means I'll have 6 MB free for downloading maps. I want to buy the Streets & Destinations CD. How much land would I be able to download to the GPS with 6 MB? A town? An entire state? Also, is it possible to upgrade a Sportrak Map so hold more maps? I'm pretty sure it's not, but I'll ask anyway. Alright, thanks for any help
  11. quote:Originally posted by Cap'n Cache:I've tried this before also. I couldn't get any signal on my Etrex though : The flight attendants didn't say anything. I'm actually flying home tomorrow (Oregon) from Germany and so I'll give it a shot again tomorrow On the way home I tried using the GPS on the plane. I got no signal at all. The only opening on a passenger jet is the little tiny window, which wasn't enough to get a solid connection.
  12. Lol! Nice work Dinoprophet. That's hilarious...
  13. quote:Originally posted by Searching_ut:I have, and carry most of the time both a sportrak map, and etrex legend while hiking, caching etc. I also even have an old GIII+, which should keep volks_ev71 happy. Of those units, my favorite is the Legend, primarily because of the higher res display, smaller size, and better track recording/moving accuracy. My own experience is that the eTrex's tend to take a beating a little better as well. You could make a pretty good argument for either unit however. Regarding basemaps, the Legend has quite a bit more detail in it's basemap than the Sportrak map. When compared to the pro, they are a little more comperable. If you're interested in downloadable maps, for most US areas I find the Garmin maps quite a bit better than the magellan offerings, both street map and TOPO. It can vary by area though, so you might want to try and view the different products looking at the region you'll be in most of the time. Finally, regarding the reception issue, there are a lot of good arguments for both, depending on where and how you'll be using your receiver. The Legend, has virtually the same characteristics as your old yellow when it comes to reception. The gain and filtering on the Sportak is set up a little differently. I tend to agree with the people who argue the magellan system works a little better in heavy tree cover, fairly flat terrain. I also however agree with the people who say the eTrex works better in most moutain/canyon type terrain with or without trees. If you'll be in both types of terrain on a regular basis my personal recommendation would be call reception a toss up, and weigh you decision on other factors that are of importance to you. Regarding M5 Drivers experience with getting the display fixed on his Garmin, that's nice to know. When I broke the plastic cover of my sportrak the first week I got it, I ended up having to pay to get it fixed, as I've mentioned on my webpage, where you can also find more ramblings about the different units. (See profile for the link) As one last input, as I mentioned in another post, the deal flying J is offering on the sportrak pro at the moment makes it the best bang for the buck in my opinion. It's the one I personally would choose if I could get it for that price....... That's about all the info I needed. Thanks a lot
  14. quote: I would spend the extra money Not Possible... I'm on a broke high school kid's budget so I don't think that's going to happen. One thing that's really been nagging me is the built-in maps on these two GPS units. Which has a more detailed map built-in?
  15. Hi Everyone, I think I'm about ready to part with my old Etrex and buy either a Etrex Legend or Magellan Sportrak Map. So, I'm looking for some good advice on which one to buy. I'm assuming that I'll have to buy one new, so with that in mind, which one should I go for? The main reason I want to switch over to a new GPS is because I'd like to have a detailed built-in map. Which of these GPS's has a better map detail? I'm also curious which GPS has is more accurate and can handle thick tree-cover. The Sportrak Map has a Internal Quadrifilar Helix, which I've heard is better?? From what info I can get from the internet, it seems as though the Sportrak Map is the way to go. Any opinions on this? Thanks for any help!
  16. I said "tarantula" but I wouldn't mind a frog either. Either way, that would be really neat. Do you have all these animals available??
  17. Welcome to Eugene! I think you'll like it here. I've been living in Eugene for quite some time now and I still like it Maybe we'll catch eachother at a cache sometime -Cap'n Cache
  18. 1) Normal cache. There's nothing like finding a Tubberware container! 2) Not too hard, but not too easy. It's fun to look around and think "Where the heck is it?!??" for a while before finding it. That makes the find much more satisfying. 3) I don't really care what's in it. I just don't like going to a cache and it's only got a couple things in it. When I made my cache, I packed it full of junk
  19. If you're ever in Schriesheim/Dossenheim Germany, then you'll have to check out Broken Stone Cache That was a very cool cache location. It's probably one of my favorites in my short Geocaching career. Another favorite is Alive and Caching
  20. That's amazing. I think I would have just flailed my arms in fear and have been mauled by an angry grizzly... I think I'll check into some pepper spray
  21. Wow TEAM 360... This is very great of you to do! I live in Eugene, so I'd totally love to go to the first cache site, in Portland. The entire Geocaching community should be proud
  22. I've also managed to get lost with just coordinates a couple days after I got my GPS. It wasn't in the Wilderness, but in a neiborhood I wasn't familiar with. I asked some guy for directions with my GPS in hand. It was pretty embarrassing...
  23. quote:Well, since I've already voted, I guess I'm not in the top 5.Dang... Same here
  24. Sometimes I'll completely forget to bring something with me when I go Geocaching. So, I don't leave or take anything. If I do bring something with me and there's nothing but junk in the cache, then I usually put something in and take nothing. Or if the cache is pretty empty I'll also do that.
  25. I'm looking into getting into SCUBA diving. A friend of mine does it and needs a scuba buddy. That would be totally awesome to log some deep-sea hydro caches!
