  1. Thanks to all those that helped me out. They were Oak coins alright so I sent them a quick note and received activation codes back already today. This is a great source for information and Oak Coins was very helpful.
  2. How do I retrieve the activation codes? I was able to get others from Oak Coins but not these two.
  3. Due to the high price of fuel I’m staying close to home this weekend and activating a few older geocoins to share. While this activation process has went pretty well I do have a couple that are giving me fits. The two coins below do not have activation codes with them and I cannot find much information on either of them. I would be pretty grateful if someone could point me in the right direction. The China coin does have a red flag; the scan makes it look funny. Thanks in advance
  4. Maybe a c330 isn’t what I would want for this. Right now I’m so intrigued by the idea I would forgo the “good deal” on the 330 for a better-suited unit. I like the sound of a dedicated navigation unit. Anyone have any suggestions?
  5. What I want to do is use a Garmin c330 to navigate between caches. I have found a 330 for the right price. I believe I could load them in as 500 waypoints. I’m guessing I would be able to do this but would appreciate some input from anyone that does this. I have had some experience with hand held units but none with automotive units. My other question is how are the maps upgraded. Does this work the same way as my 60CSX? I have auto-routing with several of my handheld units but want to try something new. Thanks in advance
  6. Through the generosity of RattlingCrew I have a new geocoin today. This is a very unique and detailed item. The topside looks like a regular marker with the exception of the weathering. The bottom side has some amazing detail and some history of this benchmark as well as its importance to Mexico and Canada. I believe this is one of the best-designed coins I have to date. This coin truly represents a place of definite interest as well as a solid connection to Geocaching. It also just plain and simple looks good. Glen you did a great job with this one and I thank you for the chance to have one.
  7. Here is what I have as of today but don’t tell my wife. GPSmap 76CS GPSmap 60CSx GPSmap 60CS GPSmap 60C GPSmap 60 GPS 60 eTrex Legend eTrex yellow Geko 201 Geko 101 I do have to share these with the kids.
  8. I have a cache in place that is made from a 3-inch piece of PVC pipe with a cap glued on one end and a rubber test plug in the other end. I have this tethered to a cinderblock with a clip on the cache end of the rope. I also attached a float to the end of the rope so it wouldn’t fall to the bottom when the container was unhooked. This cache will actually float when full and stays dry inside. I do have everything in zip lock bags just to be sure. Here is the link. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...f2-d9973c6a679e
  9. I have a question about Travel Bugs that I get various answers on so I thought I would ask the question to everyone. I currently have 8 bugs out and I was wondering just how many logs from one cacher are enough? I really hate to bring it up because the ones that are still moving around have been in the same hands for a while. I released these hoping they would move around and most of these are in spite of their size, but I also wanted them to pass through as many hands as possible. I am glad they are active but its not just the places these bugs go that interest me its also the people. Once someone has had it long enough just how do you go about asking them kindly to let the bugs go?
  10. My order was here when I got home today. They look very nice. You did a good job with this coin, as well as the simple and fair ordering process.
  11. When I first got mine I just couldn’t believe I ever got along without it. Auto routing is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I moved up from a Vista. I liked it so much that I bought a 60Cas a backup and the yellow 60 for the kids. I would recommend it to anyone that wants the most value for the dollar. I almost forgot to mention the best product support in the industry.
  12. Here is a location that I have placed a cache. The story is what caught my eye and then when I went to the spot I just had to place a cache near this spot. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...52-2c7395e79d9c
  13. I just had to deal with this issue a couple of weeks ago. Every time the unit was moving slow (walking instead of moving in the vehicle) the pointer would disappear. All that was needed to correct this was a proper compass calibration.
  14. For the last 4 hours I have been putting a brand new GPSmap60C through a thorough examination, set-up, and break in process. The screen is perfectly square and looks great. All buttons look exactly like the buttons on my GPSmap60CS. I updated the software and put a Geocaching neck lanyard on it so it’s ready to go this weekend. Once again I am completely happy with a new Garmin product.
  15. I bought a Garmin GPS 60 a couple of weeks ago. While in my location trees are not a big problem we have a few areas where tree cover can be tough. I believe that this unit gives me good reception without a lot of extras (no mapping, electronic compass, no color, or altimeter), but I have a 60CS for that. The price on this unit is pretty reasonable at about $150. I have been using the Vista, Legend, and a couple of Gekos for a few years and I like them all. I really do prefer the reception I get with the GPS 60. It seems to work well in any situation I have been in to this point. Another plus is the ability to add an external antenna for about $20 if needed. I use one on mine just as an experiment once in a while. While this greatly improves reception I really don’t like the extra wires hanging around to be caught on everything around me. This may sound like a sales pitch for Garmin but I am really just a very satisfied customer. I think for just a basic GPS the GPS 60 has a lot of value for the cost.
  16. Go with any of the 60 series. I know another cacher with a 76s and the antenna leaves a bit to be desired. I own a 60CS as well as a new GPS60 and really like both of them. I can’t imagine not having a GPS without routing capabilities as the GPSMAP 60 would. The 60 series seems to fit more naturally in my larger than average hands than the 76. I also like the button arrangement on the bottom of the unit better for one hand operation. The 76 will float in water if that is something that would be of value to you. Find a place where you can get your hands on both of them and see what feels better to you.
  17. I have also had to deal with days when my GPS seemed to consistently be wrong. I find it is usually linked to a high K-index which is a system used to measure geomagnetic activity. Here is the web address that I use to monitor this. http://www.beelinenavigator.com/us%20websi...2003/index2.htm Sorry for the cut and paste approach.
  18. What I have done with mine is to place a hose clamp around the PVC and loop it through a small link of chain. This is connected to a length of light chain we used to use for the dog with a clip on the end. About a foot under the hook is a float (plastic soda bottle with the cap siliconed on) this will keep the chain close to the surface when unhooked from the container. At the other end is a cinder block. This cache was placed in an old sand pit that the water level stays very consistent as well as clear. The container can be seen from the surface about a foot under the water. This is a small body of water that allows only electric boat motors. I would hate to think of the damage that would occur if a rather large gas powered boat was to wind up the chain and cement block.
  19. I used a piece of 3”PVC for my hydrocache. I glued a regular cap on one end of the pipe and in the other end I used what is called a test plug. This is nothing more than a rubber plug that expands as a wing nut is tightened. I had this underwater a couple of days before I placed it and it was found a couple of days later with no reports of moisture. I found everything I needed for this cache at Home Depot for less than $10.00.
  20. I just mapped your travel area on City Select North America version 6 and it totals up to 48.0 MB. This does include some maps outside of your three state area. I can get all of Nebraska, Kansas, and a lot of surrounding area loaded on my 60CS.
  21. For me it’s not only Geocaching, its all of the great technology that goes with it. I own several GPS units some have been upgrades and some not. To be perfectly honest for caching I could get along well with my Geko 101, which is a pretty basic unit. I’m not sure if the WAAS capability is a huge plus on our Geko 201. I like the legend because it can hook directly to my laptop. I like the electronic compass on my Vista a lot. The unit I have that leaves nothing to be desired is the 60CS. Now I would hate to be without the auto-routing capability of this unit. This is great for urban caching. To make a long story short I like them all. My thinking is you can’t have too many features. I think its ok to have them and still have the opportunity to use them later rather than to not have them and wish you had them later. For the thrill of Geocaching the most basic unit will work fine but for an adventure with technology buy all of the features you can. I doubt this will help you a lot but it has made me realize I might have a GPS addiction.
  22. Is it too late to place an order for 8?
  23. I have always had great service from gpscity.com. They are always my first choice.
  24. I am looking for an Etrex Summit for one of the younger members of my Geocaching team. We are looking for this model as it has an electronic compass and this seems to work better for the kids and their sudden movements. I have been watching eBay also but that ever elusive bargain seems to be elsewhere right now. I was just checking to see if someone had upgraded and needed to get rid of one.
  25. My 60CS has been doing the same thing lately. I have tried calibrating the compass and keeping good batteries in it also. I contacted Garmin when I first got my 60CS about calibrating the compass every time I changed batteries and was told it wasn’t necessary but I do it every time I change anyhow. Sometimes this seems to help but it still doesn’t act like it did when it was new. I haven’t changed any settings because I’m a big believer in if it works leave things alone. Could this have something to do with the last update? This is a frustrating issue for me, and I hope someone has the answer.
