  1. thanks for this advice. Just to clarify, do I need to finish up changing it from 1.0 to 1.0.1 and finally back to 1.0?
  2. I have been using cache magnet for about 18 months, but now I just can't get it to work on my ipod nano 3g. has anyone else had problems? It goes through the motions and sends the data over. when I go to view it I get cachemagnet ~ all by name or all by waypoint ~ a list of caches ~ the cache name ~ but no information or text at all. any ideas? is there an alternative for ipods? I have tried to email the creator by no response. hope someone can shed some light.
  3. I am new too and I also spent lots of time looking and asking questions. Although I did realise that coins and bugs were different I have to admit. I have to agree though that every one of the 9 caches I have found have contained plastic toys, shells, bits and bobs of little or no value (infact I kept all the things from christmas crackers this year as they seemed to be appropriate!) Because of this, I presumed that the swapping of items was included to give the kids something to do if you took kids with you. i would never have expected to find anything of value sitting in a tupperware box. I have only ever swapped one item and I did leave something much nicer than I took, however I don't know it's value or the value of the item I took home. With this in mind I had decided that infuture I would leave little gifts in caches (especially those that were a bit empty) and expect nothing in return. On the other hand, i have found two caches recently, 1 so full of stuff it was like Hamleys and the other had some giant plastic toy in it that made it impossible to shut the lid. I did consider removing this item just for the good of the cache, but as I had nothing to swap, i thought that I shouldn't. it is down to education. But I also think that it is 'nicer' to sometimes give the benefit of the doubt and not always presume that someone is out to steal the stash from the cache (ooh poem there!). It is most likely a genuine mistake. for me it is the fun of the find, the fresh air and discovering new places, the contents of the box is of little interest.
  4. If you want the cache description and logs etc, you need to download the GPX version, not the .loc version Hope this helps thanks everyone - it was due to me not selecting a day!! It generated the query, but I hadn't told it which day to email me!! As soon as I did it sent it within a minute or two and now it's all working
  5. Looks like you guys handled everything for me so I didn't have to jump in . Glad The Booklady got everything working and hope you have a great time out there geocaching. well not quite everything I still don't seem to be able to transfer the details to my gps. I can do it through easyGPS, but not CM. I am using a serial port cable attached to a usb adapter, so it is connected to the USB
  6. yay, I've sussed it and as expected it was my mistake, nothing to do with the software!!! I had misunderstood how PQs worked (can you tell I'm new to this ) when I ran the query it showed me a list on the website. what I hadn't done was choose a day to be emailed! As soon as I changed that I was emailed a zipped file which is what I was waiting for. Have now opened it up in CM and it shows everything I wanted. I have now just got to find it I can transfer the points to my GPSr! By the way, thanks to Cachemagnet for the youtube video!! Several us on another board involved with cardmaking and scrapbooking are learning to geocache and the film has been shared by us all and the software is proving very popular. Thanks again and hopefully that's all you'll hear from me
  7. I have been fiddling around and I think the problem is the way I have done the PQ, after reading and re-reading, it looks like I need to wait for an email to be sent with the zipped file. I have chosen tomorrow for it so hopefully all will become clear?!?!?
  8. You're correct, when you import to your .gpx into CM you should see Waypoint / Difficulty / Terrain / Name / Owner / Type / LatLon / Distance / Direction / Compass The cache page, logs and hints.. .wont show up till you send to your ipod. I'm a little confused... .can you send coords to you GPSr through GC.com??? If not then, something else is wrong and this CM thread might not be the best one to fix that. sorry, yes, I read my post back and it is a bit vague!! I can send waypoints from gc.com to my garmin, but i can't do it from Cachemagnet. I tried downloading what I had to the ipod, but still no extra details, just name GCXXXX, co-ords, placed by - no logs, description, terrain/diff
  9. that link seems to be broken, will pm you if that is ok?
  10. thanks, off to take a look, may well be in touch for that .pdf though!!!
  11. Not patronising, as far as I'm concerned, so please don't worry on that front! i didn't choose a day as I chose run it and delete it, so I presumed it would happen there and then, which it did seem to do. maybe I am just impatient for an email, but it has been hours now!
  12. what am I doing wrong? I have downloaded CM I have generated a PQ I have imported the PQ to CM, but it only has the barest details, Waypoint name, co-ords etc, no logs, no description. is it that this info won't actually be visable until I stick it on the ipod? ETA - this does not happen either also I can't send the waypoints to my ExtrexH, I use a serial port data cable with a usb adapter - on when I download from GC.com I just told it to look at the USB, but my device cannot be detected on this or any other port - sorry to go on, but I really want to play!
  13. I am a little confusted (hmmmm, now why do I seem to start all my posts like that ) I have managed to create a pocket query and can find it to look at it again (so that's a bonus!!) However I can't seem to do anything with it. I ticked the box that says email me the results, but no email. I have saved the search as a .loc file (which is the default). How do I download the PQ details. I have downloaded cachemagnet to use with an ipod, has anyone any experience with it? I can import the waypoint detials to CM, but not any of the description, logs etc, so I wondered if I am doing the PQ wrong! Thank you if you managed to read to the end of my rambling! Hopefully you can shed some light on any or all of the above
  14. It's here that is a great little leaflet, thanks for sharing
  15. I am very excited about my new hobby, but whenever I try to explain it to others, i can see them start to glaze over How do you describe geocaching and capture the 'excitement' in just a few words?
  16. I have seen details of a cache quite near me which i thought would be fun to find over christmas with my 2 and 4 year old nephews. Is it OK to revisit a cache as I would like to know it's whereabouts in advance, by visiting first to save any disappointment on the day? Also would it be bad manners to hide something in the cache addressed to them for them to find, or is that not really the done thing? thanks for your help
  17. Works for me on a Mac -but don't have an H- whats the differance? email, if you need help re programmes and applications for Macs and caching... G the H signifies a better receiver (can't remember/don't know the correct terminology!) but basically it will be more reliable under trees and in built up areas -well that's the theory anyhoo!
  18. A follow upto this saga!!! If you do buy from this ebayer, please ring first to check the stock levels!! I used BIN on the site (there were 18 in stock) rang this morning as instructed to pay card by phone, only to be told they had none in stock (it is difficult to monitor stock levels apparently coz they have a shop and a website too ) However the item is still current and it still shows 17 available!!! They will get them in on Friday, which for me isn't a big deal, however I was hoping to have got it tomorrow! So if you need this item quickly, ring first to be sure!!
  19. I would be happy to support the sponsor, but the ebayer is only £72 including postage and a data cable! Here is a link
  20. Found one - from an ebay shop GPSonlineshop (2700+ positive feedback) £72, including data cable and postage!! amazon have them for £65, but no cable, so it looks like a very competitive price! ooooh, excited now!
  21. THANK YOU both for your advice - I will go for the yellow H, now I know a bit more about it, phew, I have been searching the web all day trying to find out what you've just told me! I have been looking on ebay, there are plenty for sale, what surprises me is they don't seem to be cheaper if they are used ones which seems odd, but hopefully it will mean if we do decide to upgrade then we will get most of our money back! thank you again so much - as a newbie it would be very helpful to have this information in an easy to find location, as I am sure others will benefit too. Right, now I know what I need, I'm off to find one!!
  22. what does the basemap do/show then? Is it for walking/driving? I also understood that with the legend, you can download from your pc, rather than pluggin waypoints in one at a time which certainly appeals??? £220 is just too much for me - I completely understand why I should get it, but at this early stage in the game I cannot justify that kind of money.
