  1. This seems to have a bucket of features, but to answer one question, it has American GPS, Russian Glonass, and European Galileo support. So all three.
  2. I get this occasionally with mine and whilst the "Turn off GLONASS" solutions is a bit of a hack, for me it works. If it won't lock on, or it loses satellites for no good reason, I switch of Glonass for a few hours, just using GPS for a bit. A few hours later I try Glonass again and it seems to work. Its almost as if theres a dicky Glonass satellite up there that spews out something that disrupts the calculation.
  3. I used to have this problem, I would always have to go into Filters and "Apply Filter" before the missing caches would appear. Even though I didn't have any filters on. Every single bootup. It was weird. Seems to have stopped recently, maybe firmware sorted it. I also started not showing Found caches on the GPS, and the fact that that was a filter in itself seemed to correct this problem.
  4. No reply back from Garmin Ireland after several days. But does anyone want to hear something ridiculous? The broken 64s has been sitting on my table while I've been using the 62s in its place. Occasionally I've tried to power it on, and the same problem. I've tried to force mass storage more times than I can remember but no luck doing that at all either. Same problem. I finally gave up. I opened up the 62s and correctly set my number of found geocaches in the Trip Computer page. That was it. Quitting trying. I somewhat absent mindedly plugged in the 64s immediately after and tried to force mass storage. Same process as before only this time... it actually worked. It went into mass storage mode. Nothing was different about the way I did this... maybe a hot component cooled down in the past week? I dunno. A mystery of mysteries. Everything (including lunch) was dropped as an emergency backup of all waypoints and all files on the 64s was taken. And then I popped some batteries in it and powered it off. It booted perfectly, albeit taking a bit longer. Its back in action. I still have no idea what happened. It seems to be working perfectly but suffice to say the 62s will be ready to go and in my backpack at all times for now. Thanks for all the help here, I've learnt a lot about how these things work over the past week. But I'm still none the wiser about what actually went wrong with the thing or why it suddenly decided to work again (for now anyway.........) I'm putting it down as "one of those things".
  5. Thanks. I'm going down the hardware failure line too as all of these ideas have not got me past that single boot issue and given that it failed during use, I suspect something melted or went bang. Ah well. Trusty, peeling GPSMap62s it is for now anyway, may your terribly low waypoint limit be forgiven for now! I've emailed Garmin about the 64s anyway, we'll see what they come back with.
  6. Thanks for the help, but I've already tried that and it just doesn't work. On my working 62s, trying these exact steps WILL work. The unit will go into mass storage mode after the 30 seconds which is perfect. On the broken 64s, after the ~30 seconds the unit tries a normal reset instead of going into mass storage mode and hits the crash point. The problems started when the unit was on, thats what I don't understand. I don't think it was anything I did while turning the unit on/off/etc
  7. Have experimented a bit more with my 62s and the broken 64s. On the 62s, holding either the down or up arrow when pressing the power button (and holding it down) causes it to display GARMIN for about 20 seconds, then it goes into USB storage mode automatically, bypassing the boot. Great! Doing the same on the broken 64s, the button causes it to display GARMIN for about 20 seconds, then just start the normal loading screen which crashes So close, I thought you were onto something there.
  8. Thanks. Tried it on my laptop as well, still no dice To get to the point of actually connecting to the computer after you plug it in, it has to get past the point at which it crashes, then do "save tracklogs etc" screen and then the USB connector appears onscreen and it actually connects to the computer.
  9. I've held it for about 30 seconds, I can hear through my speakers that it has attempted to connect, but I do not get the usual sound that it has connected. After about 30 seconds it gives up, as I hear the standard disconnected noise, and then the usual boot continues and it crashes. I'm using my trusty old peeling GPSmap 62s, and have tried the same thing on that so I'm fairly sure its being held down long enough. In an ideal world I'll get in touch with Garmin and they'll swap it for a prototype 66s, which I'm hoping they're currently building. But I'd say fat chance of that happening! Looks like I'll have to ring them Monday morning.
  10. Have just given that a go, doesn't seem to work. Immediately pressing the power-off or waiting till the last instant doesn't seem to cause it to try and shut down, and then this error shuts it down itself, keeping the loop going. I also tried taking the batteries out and using power from the USB... can pull the cable and instantly kill it but that doesn't seem to do anything either
  11. Hi all, I have a 3 or 4 year old GPSMap64s which was working fine up until this afternoon. Batteries got low and died, I put two new standard rechargables into it and, oddly, the unit immediately said batteries low, showing them I remember at 2 bars. Then when I scrolled the map, there appeared to be no map outside of the currently loaded tile. Got a route calculation error when I tried to navigate. I switched the unit off and tried to start it again. Since then, it will not start. The GARMIN logo shows as normal and then gives the standard user message plus the first of the loading screens (GPSMap64s and some other text appears at the bottom of the screen) but only briefly before the screen flashes white for an instant and the unit switches off. It does not get to the Loading Waypoint and Maps screen. None of my usual tricks will work to get around this. If I plug the unit into USB, the same thing happens... it doesnt get far enough in the boot to connect. If I try to hard reset with PAGE and ENTER, the "Delete user data" screen comes up but only for a second and the unit switches off. It appears to still be hitting the same boot problem in the background. Holding down the arrow key and trying to force into Mass Storage doesnt work.... it connects but does not recognise and the minute I take my finger off the key it continues booting, same crash. There is no SD card in the unit, I'm on the software version behind the current one AFAIK, and it booted perfectly this morning but I cannot get it to boot again and no trick I've tried can get past this sudden switchoff. The "user note" from the programmable text file does come up (albeit briefly) so as far as I can tell the data on the unit is intact. Have tried with various batteries, without batteries (just USB) and all I can think of. Does this sound bricked to anyone, or does anyone have any clues? I can't get it to connect to the computer and it will not boot at all. Any other way to factory reset or force it to try to reload the software similar to an update? Any ideas? Thanks a mil.
  12. Hi Justin. Major problems have surfaced in Ireland this week. We've always had a slow site in the evenings and at weekends but from late last week (around the 10th I guess) the GC site (and associated sites, API, forums) have been completely unresponsive in the evening, or at best diabolically slow. They're fast early morning, but bog down late in the evenings, usually around 6pm GMT. It is ONLY on the UPC Ireland ISP, every UPC customer I know has problems. 4G and other providers never slow down. UPC are aware but are hopeless at customer support. [All other websites work fine by the way] We've independently come to the same conclusion as you guys, that a node halfway along the Tracert 'list' is to blame. I have been using Pingplotter to traceroute over time, and get an idea of the packetloss going on. The packetloss from the server at fault is usually between 20 and 50%, but in the evenings goes right up to 100%, and the site doesn't work. nl-ams02a-rd2-xe-5-1-1.aorta.net at 84.116.130.33 is the troublemaker. Heres some pics from Pingplotter. Edit: Aorta servers are one of UPCs backbones.
  13. Put a whole load of identical boxes down there, and have the log in one only.
  14. Hi folks, I currently own a Garmin GPSMap60csx and I really like it. Its main drawback is that its not paperless and I have to use a PDA for that. I am trying to justify buying a 62 of some sort, and I just would like some information on them. Firstly: With regard to the different models of 62, am I right in basically saying – 62 = Basic Model with basemap 62s = 62 + altimeter + compass + wireless + microSD 62sc = 62s + camera 62st = 62s + contour maps 62stc = 62st + camera Is it as simple as that? Secondly: I currently use City Navigator and OSM routable maps obtained from http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ and Irish contour maps that I download too. I use Mapsource for transfer. I hear there are differences in how these are handled in the 62 series. Will I still be able to upload all of these maps to the card/memory and use them just as I did with the 60csx? Does Mapsource work with the new series and how much better is it than the Basecamp software? Will that still work with OSM and how much better is Basecamp than Mapsource? Also, what are the differences in usability between how the 60csx and 62 series deal with uploaded maps? Finally (!), does the 62 have different waypoint types for traditional, multi, mystery etc caches and how long can the cache descriptions be when they are uploaded to it? My Cachemate on the PDA truncates long stuff and doesn’t display pictures. Does the 62 series display pictures or not? And how much/how useful is the satellite image feature? Is this worldwide and does it cover Ireland in good detail? Lots of questions, but not really questions that can be answered by mucking about with the unit in a shop. Any help would be appreciated!!!
  15. If you're up for a challenge, try and get OSM maps onto your Garmin. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_Map_On_MapSource Also there are a few free (Topo etc) maps of Ireland which are easy to install. http://emerald-island.eu/wikka/GpsMap
  16. I had a similar problem where everything bar the basic description disappared. I pulled the memory card from my PDA, started Cachemate, turned off the PDA, put the memory card in and restarted Cachemate. It reloaded the database and all was well again,.
  17. Ok two things I hear Garmin are gonna be doing a quarterly map update cycle "Lifemap" soon. Is this going to be a once-purchase City Navigator replacement with free quarterly map updates??? Also, I hear they're gonna be replacing the 60csx soon. Any news on the unit that will replace it? My csx will last me for a while yet, just wondering
  18. I have one of these in the cupboard. Got it initially as it was cheap when I just started Geocaching. I soon upgraded to a 60csx. Basic 60 is an ok unit. Reception isnt wonderful and it cant take any maps. They were my issues with it. Other than that its a good intro unit, just dont try to use it under too many trees and be prepared to lust after a better unit fairly soon!
  19. 60csx is a fantastic unit, however, I'd be tempted to get the model below (60something) that has the same features but not the barometric altitude sensor. Its useful, but on mine it bugs me as on a plane you will see barometric cabin height (8000ft approx) and theres no way to turn it off!
  20. You have to have a window seat, no questions asked. Even with the most sensitive of GPSes that you see on this forum. You may also lose signal when the plane turns, as you only really ever get sat fix from the window side that you're sitting next to.
  21. Hi Visability jacket. Everyone ignores you and thinks youre a council worker
  22. Just got this email from Garmin, thought the forum could do with a heads-up! So no free update for me (GPSMap60csx) but it should benefit some people on here. Head to My Garmin and chuck in your serial number to see if you qualify.
  23. The unfortunate thing about this is that there are NO caches in Limerick in Ireland
  24. Personally, I dont like Virtuals. Theres no box there to find, and you can stick a virtual anywhere. You'd get this almighty flood of virtuals, which would suck. Geocaching is fine the way it is IMO. All we need are more caches and more cachers! (In Ireland anyway )
