  1. Normally not... unless I forget to turn it off! I didn't notice there was a setting to archive when full. Maybe it is the solution, although I would prefer to have separated tracks per day.
  2. Hi, I found this information about file limitations on Garmin web site: GPSMAP 64 (series) 2,000 GPX files 5,000 waypoints No limit on geocaches (outside of max number of GPX files supported and memory available) 200 routes, 250 points per route 200 saved tracks 2,000 archive tracks* 10,000 points per track 500 custom map tiles 250 BirdsEye Imagery files Approximately 3,000 mapping segments I am concerned with the 10,000 points per track limit, as I also use this unit as a GPS logger. Currently, it is configured to auto-archive every 24 hours, and to record a point every 5 seconds. This means that a 24 hours track would contain 17,280 points, which is over the limit... Do you know what will happen when the limit is reached? Will a message appear? Will it simply stop recording my track? A solution might be to activate the Auto recording method and its variable rate, but it is not documented at all. I guess the more quickly you move, the more frequently points are recorded, but I need to have more information on how it works. Did someone experiment with it?
  3. I was able yesterday to confirm what insig wrote, as I was in a train on a seat facing backwards. The train was travelling from north to south. The 64s had its antenna oriented to the north, I was displaying the compass and data fields, compass heading that was indicating 0°, and GPS heading that was indicating 180°. Concerning the compass itself, when the train was running, it was indicating 180°, i.e. the GPS heading. But as soon as the train stopped in a station, it was indicating 0°, using this time the compass heading. That's the kind of thing that I would really need to find in the documentation!
  4. Just curious: Did you have GLONASS enabled or disabled? Yes, GLONASS was enabled, as well as WAAS/EGNOS.
  5. That explains what happened to me today: I was walking in the street with the compass displayed, and I noticed that it was turning randomly while I was walking straight. When I was back in the office (with no GPS reception), I tested again, and the compass was very stable, I could almost make it move degree by degree by turning on my chair. I guess that the satellite reception was not that good in the street because of the surrounding buildings. I will add the GPS accuracy as a data field displayed on the compass screen.
  6. That's good to know. Is the behaviour the same on a GPSMAP 64s?
  7. Thank you for your answer, StefandD. There are indeed some filter options on the 64s, but it some cases it will not be enough: there are in my area some sets of related caches that are quite distant from each other, with different type/difficulty/terrain and a lot of other caches in-between. I will try for these cases to create waypoints that will get me closer to the next cache, so that it will appear on the list ordered by distance. I have installed GSAK on my computer, and have started playing with it. I have to spend more hours on it to determine if and how I will use it, but so far I can say that it's a very interesting tool.
  8. Hi, I bought a Garmin GPSMAP 64s that I will use for geocaching. As a Premium Member, I created a PQ that includes 1000 caches around my home, and loaded it into my device. It's nice, as I can find caches that are near my position when I am walking in my town. But sometimes I will want to be more selective, and focus only on a few caches for the day. For example, there is a serie of 6 caches that I want to find. Here is how I proceed to get them on my device : On geocahing.com: By applying filters on keywords and owner, I could easily isolate the 6 caches I want to find Next step is to put these 6 caches in a list. I could not find a way to do it from the list display, I had to enter in each cache description and click on the Bookmark link. And the empty list has to be created before searching for the caches, as you cannot create a new list when you click on Bookmark, you can only add to an existing one. Once the list is created with the 6 caches, I created a PQ from it. On my device: I loaded on the device the GPX files created by the PQ. But to easily find my 6 caches, I had to remove from the device all the other GPX files containing caches... Once I will have found my 6 caches, I will however not be able to look for other caches close to me, as I have deleted the other GPX files I this the right way to proceed? I wish there were a way to have on the device several cache lists, and to easily switch between them, but it does not seem to be possible. Patrick
  9. I made some testing with the Battery save setting active, and I can confirm that the accuracy of the track is not affected when the screen is off. Concerning the WAAS/EGNOS, I can also confirm that it is not disabled when the Battery save function is on: I put the 64s on a table outside, displaying the satellite page, until some Ds appeared, showing that a correction was applied by WAAS/EGNOS. I then let the screen turn off for an hour, and when I pressed a button to turn it on again, there were still some Ds displayed on some satellites, so it was still active. Thanks for your answers, Patrick
  10. I read the manual, even more than once, and here is what it says about battery save: "Battery Save: Saves the battery power and prolongs the battery life by turning off the screen when the backlight times out." But can we trust the manual to describe everything a function does? I don't think so... For example, when you read about WAAS/EGNOS, it is nowhere mentioned that on the satellite page, some "D" will appear to indicate that a correction is applied.
  11. I read on a forum that battery saver mode also disables WAAS/EGNOS. This is for GPSMAP 76C, but maybe it's the same for the 64s... It's a shame that Garmin does not document clearly these important things.
  12. Hi, I bought a GPSMAP 64s a few days ago, and I am learning to use it. One of my usages, in addition to geocaching, will be to use this device as a GPS logger to later geotag my pictures. In this mode, I want to get the maximum longevity from my batteries, as I will turn on the unit early in the morning and off in the evening, while recording my position every 5 seconds. The "Battery save" option seems interesting, as it turns off the screen. But what about the GPS track? Will it continue to record it with the same precision? Thanks, Patrick
  13. You have very little chance of understanding the English translation, as the French text is full of errors and difficult to understand, even to a native French like me What the OP means is that, if a cache is closed to the edge of a cliff, there is no easy way to know if the cache is at the top of the cliff or at the bottom of the cliff.
