  1. Thanks, I'll look up the proxie option
  2. Exactly, I would like to keep that possible. In a perfect world, it would work out the way you foresee. In this world, Murphy's Law applies. The weak chain will get broken & caps will get lost. And the more caps that are added, the bulkier it is to carry and to fit into caches. ... And the less chance of cachers wanting to move it. Ok, you all convinced me. I'm going to change it and will drop the wish of adding extra crown caps.
  3. I bought a trackable sticker for a car a while ago. Now I don't want it on my car anymore, but I would like to use TB code for a trackable item which goes from cache to cache. The problem is, I do not have a dogtag for it. Do you have any tips on how I could create the best alternative for a real dogtag?
  4. Exactly, I would like to keep that possible.
  5. -1, we should all help each other to get the most out of the game. Now back on topic. Great you care! If you are in doubt you can, as others also mentioned, send a nice email to the user and get informed if they intend to continu geocaching in the near future. Keyword is 'be nice', never get frustrated or something close to mad.
  6. I want to send out the following TB into the world. Do you have any additional tips to get the most out of this TB? Maybe think of: The text on the TB page, the way I've added the crown caps on the TB etc. Edit: this specific TB will not be send out as it is now, i will change it and ask the same question on a later time again.
  7. Thanks, that was indeed the way how I found it. It would be great if GS optimized this feature regarding the abilitie to search or browse through them.
  8. I accidentally stumbled across a shared list by someone else on the GS website. It was usefull to see a list of multis with a certain characteristic. But I can't seem to find how I got to those shared lists on the website. If someone knows what I'm talking about, could you please explain where to find those lists?
  9. Impressive, I'll quit GC as well when I reach the 10.000
  10. You won't find the owner, or maybe just maybe when in all coincidence the owner is active on this forum. So just keep it for yourself. But I would mentoin on the trackable page what the reason is why you have this item in your inventory. Maybe it's fun to combine the backgroud in a new original goal. But still a strange story. Can you share the link to the trackable?
  11. 30 here, i started about 2 months ago because we (my girl and I) were having a hard time amusing ourselfs on a boring sunday afternoon. I had heard of geocaching, read about it somewhere, so I knew it had to do something with treasures and such. She likes to walk, yes just walk around the block or in woods without any purpose. I hate to walk or cycle without any purpose, so I thought 1+1=? We started doing our first cache, a mystery and of course failed, then we started our first multi and failed. Basically I just started without any preperations and didn't knew about the types of caches at all and how to get to the cache. So after both failures I was forced to read a beginners manual. So at that point I discovered the Geoside of life. Finding the first cache, because i finally knew what i was doing, was great. After that it went quite flowless, until now at least. So why do I play the game? - Keeping my girl happy - Killing boring sunday afternoons - The feeling when you finally find that stupid plastic/iron container
  12. I haven't looked into the official rules. But from my personal opinion I wouldn't do it. Why? - others may find themself in an unpleasant situation because they may not be so open minded as you are. - a lot of kids are playing the game with their parents and because of their ignorance they could do things with your husbands ashes what they shouldn't do. - a lot of TB's get lost, deliberately or not. I wouldn't mind to retrieve the ashes of someone from a cache but I can understand others would. Maybe you can think of another item in remembrance of your husband which is not physically from his body and you do not mind losing. Such as an item about his former job, hobby, character or anything else. I do understand your wish, I also hope you can use my opinion in your decision.
  13. "Collectible" means a Geocacher who has the TB logged into his Inventory may move the TB to his own Inventory at the will of the TB's Owner. The "Collectible" setting does not create an automatic five-finger discount where a finder can just pocket and "keep it". By definition, there are several required logs to do the move to the "Collection", the Owner may get the TB back at will. If the plan is to only have "Discover" and "Note" logs available, here's a plan: 1: Mark it Collectible. 2: Move it to the Collection. 3: Mark it Not Collectible. 4: Leave that setting alone from now on. If the plan is to keep as much log flexibility as possible for the Owner, leave it "not selected", or select "Not Collectible", and leave it at that. If Geocachers seem to be "Grabbing" the TB frequently, they are likely making other oddball logs. Instead of messing with "Collectible" for the purpose of odd log control, see if you can get those cachers to cut it out. I thought I understood the collectable/collection stuff, apperantly I didn't. Thanks for both of your explinations Kunarion. I created a second account to find out what another user could do with the TB if it is in my inventory or collection and when collectable is ticked or unticked or when I mark it 'seems to be missing'. And indeed, the only correct status is in my collection and collactable unticked. That makes it only able to be discovered or for writing a note. All the other statusses makes it possible to grab it or more.
  14. I bought a nice Decal sticker for on my car back window. I was wondering if there is any reason why I should not set the status to 'Seems to be missing'? I thought that this status would be appropriate as a car TB . Is there a rule that you may only set it as missing when it is really missing, or is it ok? Is there any negative impact for the TB or myself when I set the status 'seems to be missing'. By the way, I set the TB as collectable and place it in my collection. As I've read in other forum posts this should be correct, or am I wrong?
  15. I think both points of Andronicus and mrreet are clear . Thank you all for the info. In the end I don't see any reason to buy a dedicated GPS device at this moment. It doesn't seem to be worth the additional advantages above a phone. I didn't expected that my question would start a long discussion like this, but because there were 2 people with opposite opinions I got quite a clear view on both sides. Even though it got a bit personal (which wasn't really necesarry), it was educational. thanks for the info.
  16. Every response will be based on personal experience and preference Yes, the same "tired old" arguments against "cellphones" (awful name - if you cache with a phone, you cache with a smartphone), which are most often coming from people who have experience with both and prefer the dedicated GPS. People who prefer their smartphone have decided that their solution to those concerns are worth the effort. So yes, it very much is a matter of personal preference. You can ask for people's experiences, and try to find someone who caches like you, has similar preferences as you, and decide to put more weight to their comments regarding which is better or worse. There is no objective better or worse, if you can use any device and find (even place) geocaches. You are exactly mentoining why I asked my inital question. I only have expierence with my phone, but I wanted to hear the opinions of others why a dedicated GPS device could be a consideration. In the end a dedicated GPS device is not free at the local electro store, so opinions of others are really appreciated. There was a reason why I placed the question in the 'Getting started' forum .
  17. Um, I think you meant GS (Groundspeak) and that link takes you to a thread posted by a Groundspeak Lackey on the Groundspeak forum. Ok, I won't tick of Eartha, but I still find it strange there's nothing mentoined by GC itself. As I said, I think by "GC" you mean "GS", meaning Groundspeak. A "GC" is usually used to refer to a geocache. Another Grounspeak resource, other than these forums, is the Help Center. http://support.Groundspeak.com/index.php There is a section for Trackables: http://support.Groundspeak.com/index.php?pg=kb.book&id=10 But it's quite simple really...trackables are not swag. The guidelines about trading swag do not apply to trackables. Anyone who owns a cache that declares a "one to one" rule about trackables is not complying with the accepted fact that trackables ARE NOT SWAG. Anyone can name a cache a "tb hotel". It means nothing. It's just a name, not a cache type. When the cache owner posts a trackable restriction, then it becomes a trackable prison. There is no reason to comply with the demands of a cache owner. You aren't trading trackables. You are meant to move them on, complying with the trackable owner's wishes and intent. B. Yes I mean GS. And yes I'm still a newbe, just logging for a month or so. So please forgive my ignorance. The link http://support.Groundspeak.com/index.php?pg=kb.page&id=148 indirectly mentoined that 1-to-1 trading restrictions of TB's is against the rules. That's the only hint I could find, but still not directly mentoining that TB 1-to-1 trading restrictions are against the rules. Yes, the forum post is posted by a Groundspeak resource, but you could understand that 'just' a forum post will not be seen as a guideline if it's not in the middle of all the other guidelines in the help center. Off couse every normal thinking person knows TB's are brought into the game to travel, but if guidelines are not mentoined properly in the help center of GS (not GC ) this will cause discussions. Again don't get me wrong I agree with all of you regarding this subject. I just want to say GS should explicitly mentoin this on the website, instead of 'just' a forum post. I'm done with this discussion, it's not going anywhere. Conclusion: TB are created for traveling, 1-to-1 trading restrictions should not be honored, this rule is not mentoined properly on the GS website only on these forums. Thanks for all the replies.
  18. Ok so if i summerize the above posts: You can buy a dedidicated GPS, because: - It's more durable - Batterylife is better - No need for data connection - Better screen visibility If i understand correctly a dedicated GPS isn't by default more accurate than a phone. Conclusion: Both options will work fine, it's more a personal decision.
  19. Ok, I won't tick of Eartha, but I still find it strange there's nothing mentoined by GC itself.
  20. I agree that hotels aren't violating any guidelines. My question was indeed incorrect. I was looking for official guidelines mentioning trading restrictions of caches. I found the post you just mentioned, but if I'm not mistaken, this is not an official GC post.
  21. I've been Geocaching for a month or so. I am using the free c:geo app on android device (Samsung s4 mini). So far everything is going fine. After reading a bit on several places I was wondering the following: "Is there a reason for me to consider buying a (expensive) dedicated GPS device instead of my free c:geo app on my android phone?". Thank you for sharing your point of view.
  22. Is there a link to an article of Groundspeak mentoining the fact that 'hotels' are against the official rules? I can't really find it. I would like to use that link when a TB-prison owner is complaining about taking TB's without placing new TB's in his prison. Thanks in advance.
