  1. Thanks for the ideas guys! Yeah my girlfriend also though maybe it was an indication of a tree re-plantation area ahead like some of you thought too. Quebec is big on ATV'ing and maybe those signs were directed more at them than the cars on the highway? ATV'rs drive along the ditches quite often. I just can't believe how HARD it is to find that sign on an official government site!
  2. Hi guys OK this is a bit off topic lol but I was driving through Quebec a week ago and came across these signs on the side of the highway, and can't figure out what they mean! Can anyone help? It's not completely off-topic, as the drive was part of a Maritime Geocaching road trip & wow the East coast is awesome! Thx in advance!
  3. The best/easiest way to figure out what sorts of things to put into a new Geocache is to go out & find a whole bunch of existing ones & notice what they have in them
  4. Well first of all you didn't waste any money, as the Venture HC is a great Geocaching GPSr & a good value at that. However being an entry level device, it won't ever give you turning/driving instructions. You'll have to just watch the screen & figure out for yourself when to turn on whatever road. It's OK,, my 1st GPSr didn't do turning instructions either & I actually had fun trying to do that in my head
  5. Kinda/sorta on the same topic.. I've been using my Viewsonic Viewpad 7" tablet for Geocaching for a few weeks now. This thing doesn't have any 3G connectivity at all! (although I could add that) so all my Geocaching has been "purely offline". I bought the Locus Pro app for ~$6 and with it I can download large map areas for offline use. Then I build pocket queries which I drop into the Viewpad while connected wifi. After that I can romp around Geocaching all I want, with "0" data usage cost ..you can do the same thing with a Smartphone
  6. So, who's gonna have it available for sale first, & when?
  7. The Magellan Explorist GC is probably the cheapest *new* GPSr that is currently available & does a nice job of paperless Geocaching http://www.tigergps.com/magellanexploristgc.html And yeah, comb the classifieds/eBay too for deals!
  8. Wow this is going to be confusing.. I thought this thread was about the Nuvi 295W, which according to WiFi ID, is also a Montana The thing is clearly designed to be handheld & for outdoor use, so most likely a lanyard & belt clip will be added to the accessories.
  9. If you're going to use the handheld GPS alongside your smartphone, then all you NEED is a cheapie model. Seriously. And most service providers have a some sort of link either a website or a phone # you can call to hear what your current usage-to-date is. You don't need to wait till the end of the month to find out how much your "free app" is actually costing you
  10. I've been using a Vista Cx for years but recently bought an Oregon 450. Right now I'm a happy camper ..but I "wish" my next GPSr will have some sort of wireless data transfer option to my smartphone
  11. Most apps download & install in a few minutes at most.. are you getting a good data signal where you are? Do you not have an app icon now on your phone?
  12. Thanks for the tip chuck I'll be sure to back up my saved maps just in case. So far I've been trying out the free version of Locus but am certainly planning on buying the Pro version, as I believe in supporting quality apps I hope the Pro version doesn't have any restrictions? So far I've just been grabbing the OSM classic maps & so far so good.
  13. I recently bought a 7" Viewsonic Viewpad that has Android 2.2 as well as a built in GPS receive AND a compass, for $299! The size is great for viewing geocache information & the battery life is excellent too. I've been using the Locus mapping app and it is terrific! It allows you to download map segments to the tablet as well as it's able to read the .gpx pocket query data, directly from the .zip file! The GPS receiver is excellent in it too. With Locus running in the background it will track my entire day's travel even while sitting in the car's back seat.
  14. You can figure out yourself how waterproof it is by putting some tissue paper in it, take it to your back yard & blast it with a garden hose. Check the tissue paper afterwards & see if it's wet
  15. I think PreCaching is the predecessor to "Geocaching for WebOs" If the one app isn't working there are 2 other webOS apps to try "Mapping Tool" and "Go to". Both support the Geocaching .gpx file format
  16. I thought Symbian was on deaths door since the partnership with Nokia & Microsoft, Nokia plans on having WP7 as it's primary smartphone O/S http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/11/rip-symbian/ If your next question is, ok so where then is the official WP7 Geocaching app? Good question
  17. Only if you install a GM battery with side terminals. Actually, I have them in my Jeeps and I have no idea on how to recalibrate them. I think you press a button and then drive around in a circle! Maybe that's why Jeep invented this thing?
  18. I didn't think with android you needed to "re-buy" apps if you were replacing a stolen phone, for example.. Don't purchased apps transfer over to your new device automatically if using the same account credentials?
  19. I really think the "smartphone + a rugged outdoor GPSr" combination makes the absolute best sense for Geocaching as long as you don't mind having 2 devices. In combo usage, the outdoor GPSr only needs to be a very basic cheap model, no maps or anything, just a good sensitive receiver. I just wish the makers would devise a method to wirelessly transfer coordinate data from the smartphone to the GPSr that'd be sweet! & I'm sure we'll see that ability sooner or later.
  20. Kinda like how a stolen candy bar is tastier than a paid for one?
  21. All you actually "need" for Geocaching is a device that shows you distance & direction to your target. Maps aren't a requirement, paperless isn't a requirement. You can probably grab a basic Etrex "yellow" used for ~$30
  22. Ok it's not a 60series.. but my girlfriend "washed" her Oregon 400 Yup it went through a whole laundry cycle (was in a coat pocket). And it was just fine afterwards!
  23. If you use AA and AAA batteries a lot and want to get OPTIMUM usage from then, you seriously need to grab this battery charger! http://www.lacrossetechnology.com/bc700/index.php Sanyo Eneloops are awesome batteries but the charger that comes with them doesn't do them justice.
  24. WOW Walts that Locus app is amazing!! I just bought a 7" Viewpad & was scouting for the best offline map option and,, GEEZ I wasn't ready to find such a NICE app!! Did you get the full/Pro version? Is it identical as the free one just no ads?
  25. Personally call me old fashioned or whatever but I log the finds manually at my home PC at the end of the day/trip. I just use the field note option to write myself shorthand reminders for retrieval at home. MUCH rather type on a real keyboard than on a tiny GPS
