  1. Add me to the list of geocachers that are hugely disappointed in this decision. I get that they are only available in the US, but everyone that caches understands that. What does it hurt to leave them there? They don't require any effort from HQ to leave them alone. In fact, it takes work to remove the pertinent pages, all of the references to them, and all of the fields in the databases. They can't be taking up too much space on the servers or in the DB schemas. Why? Don't break what isn't broken. Please!!
  2. I'll take Clackamas County.
  3. Sorry ... replied to the post above instead of below. Trying again .... "Save to GPS" does not work with Lowrance units. Instead, use the "GPX File" button to save the .gpx file to your PC. Then drag and drop or copy/paste to the GPX folder on the Endura. Even better, create a Pocket Query with many (but <=500) caches and drop the entire GPX file onto the unit. (This requires Premium Membership on geocaching.com.) Good luck.
  4. I hooked the GPS up to my Desktop & the problem seems to have corrected itself! "Save to GPS" does not work with Lowrance units. Even better, create a Pocket Query with many (but <=500) caches and drop the entire GPX file onto the unit. (This requires Premium Membership on geocaching.com.) Good luck.
  5. Thanks for the suggestion. Tried it without success. Figure I'll leave the batteries out overnight and give it another go in the morning. Maybe I'll dream up a solution in my sleep. Still didn't work. And didn't dream up a solution overnight. Anyone else have any ideas? Thanks.

  7. Need help. I'm out for a five day weekend of camping and geocaching. On day 2, the screen on my Endura Safari has gone white. I'm sure I must have hit a menu or button combination to set it this way, but I have no idea what. The unit is on; I can touch the screen and hear it click. I can see the Safari logo when it boots up, before it turns white. I have tried changing the backlight from 100% to 0% to 75%; but still all I get is a white screen. I have turned the unit off/on; changed out three sets of good batteries. I've googled how to reset it and that requires tapping commands on the screen that I can't see! Please, does anyone know how to make the screen visible again? My weekend of geocaching is at risk! Thanks --
  8. 3MudDogs, the issue of waypoint navigation is on the list of fixes to be implemented. We will be adding the ability to turn off the "Waypoint arrival alarm", so you will be able to continue to navigate to your waypoint just like you can do for a geocache. Please let me know of any other suggestions you may have to improve the Endura line of GPSr's. That's great news! Those two are my biggest issues. I'll be eagerly watching for those fixes to come out. I do like the unit for the most part. The onboard filtering is great. It's what makes me think I can load 4000 caches and still find what I'm looking for in the field. And I love the Field Notes; very important for those caching marathons, especially since I like to log my caches in order of the finds. I'll send you some other (and much less offensive) issues offline. Thanks for the official info.
  9. I am not sure why the file size restriction, my guess would be that when the code was being written it was decided to limit the number of caches, in a GPX file to 500 since that is the max allowable in a PQ. I have requested that we remove that limit or change it to 4000. No I do agree that with that many caches in a GPX file it will take some time to load and sort them, so I would suggest keeping the files small and manageable. We are working on getting website updated with all of the current specs as well as improving the way out FAQ's work. Any questions let me know. Thanks for all of the answers. To respond to the various comments: - I do use GSAK to filter, sort, etc. That's how I get a .gpx file of more than 500 caches. - I also have a canned filter in GSAK of my own settings to remove inactive caches, caches with >3 DNF logs, etc. - And I have used a couple of different macros to generate .gpx files with <500 caches. I just shouldn't have to use it. My unit holds 4000 caches. I want to be able to upload a file of 4000 if I wish. Yes, I know it will take longer to load them up; but then I get to cache longer, too. :-) - I don't know how many caches are in your surrounding areas, but in mine, a limit of 500 caches only gets me a six mile radius around my house. (Those are the unfound caches only and with 1600+ finds I've found plenty in town already.) I commute 20 miles to work each day; I'd like to have a unit uploaded with caches in all of the areas in which I travel every day. You never know where you might end up on a whim some day and I want to know what caches are nearby. EnduraExpert: Thanks for the request to remove the 500 cache file limit. That's what I'm hoping for. Now, if you can only get them to fix the problem where the unit stops navigating when you get close to a waypoint (instead of a geocache), I might actually be able to make the Endura my primary GPS for geocaching. As long as that is a problem, I have to use a different unit. Thanks to all. Happy caching!
  10. Sorry for the confusion. The size of the geocache files, pocket queries, is 500 or less, but in multiples of 500 up to 4000 total geocaches. Hope this helps. Be safe. N Well, that explains why the unit sometimes displays the caches I've uploaded and sometimes doesn't. That's been very frustrating. But why the file size restriction? Seems silly that it can hold 4000 caches (Yippee!), but I have to upload them 500 at a time. And where is this file size restriction documented? I've been all over the Lowrance site trying to figure out why it would sometimes read and sometimes not read my files. And when will there be a software update to fix this? :-) Thanks for the explanation. Knowing the workaround will greatly reduce my frustration with the unit.
  11. Also, don't use a geocache .GPX file (or pocket query) containing more than 500 geocaches. The GPS file management sytem doesn't like more than 500/per file. Congrats on the new toy! Be safe. N So what is the real geocache capacity for the Endura? (I have a new Safari, if they're different.) I thought I had read on the Lowrance website that it would hold up to 2000 or 3000. But now the site doesn't say (although it says how many waypoints, routes, and trails it holds?). I wanted this unit because it held more caches than my current unit. Am I still limited to just 500 caches ? If it does hold more (hopefully 3000), why can I only load .gpx files with <=500 caches?
  12. I wonder what the illegal app is deleted by the moderator. [Discussion of unauthorized application removed by moderator.]
  13. I've had my Moto Droid for all of 24 hours now. I've downloaded GeoBeagle (a survey of this and other forums indicates it's one of the best free apps). I figured out how to get caches one by one, navigate to them, and then log them. Now that I've finally figured out how to mount my sd card, I'm trying to download a PQ to my droid. The wiki page (on www.cacheopedia.com) says to "navigate to the Download directory of your phone and copy the .LOC, .GPX or .ZIP files to that location." My sd card does not have a "download directory" by default. I have created a few different versions of a download folder and dropped a .gpx file into them without success. Where do I need to drop the files on the sd card? Thanks for the help so far getting me this far.
  14. Our local geocaching organization (Geocachers Exploring Oregon: see GEOregon.com) is holding the typical holiday geocaching event in our area. When posting the event, we included a request for attendees to bring a donation for the local food bank "if you are able." We thought we were doing a good thing and supporting our community. Unfortunately, our local reviewer would not publish the event due to this voluntary request. Apparently, it violates the "Caches that Solicit" cache listing guideline. Solicitations are off-limits. For example, caches perceived to be posted for religious, political, charitable or social agendas are not permitted. Geocaching is supposed to be a light, fun activity, not a platform for an agenda. What do you think? Does this type of request represent "a platform for an agenda"? Or is it an appropriate part of a "light, fun activity" that supports the mission and goals of geocaching? Thanks for your input.
  15. I don't think they ever made a USB cable for the Pro series. I have seen the standard "Com" cables online for as low as $10 shipped. That's correct. Magellan did not make a USB cable for the SporTrak line; they only made the serial cable. But you can purchase a serial to USB cable if you do not have a DB9 connection on your PC/laptop. If you're interested, I have an extra serial cable that I will sell to you. Contact me through gc.com and we'll see what we can work out.
  16. I've only tried one - and it worked fine - however - I've seen others complain that it will not read them - It may be really dependant on GSAK settings. I have a demo model of the Safari and am helping to test and provide feedback to Lowrance. There is a software bug that makes the unit not always recognize a .gpx file if the unit does not have a satellite lock. Go outside and get a signal, and the unit suddenly finds the cache file. It's an intermittent thing; works some days without a signal, but not others. Lowrance is aware of the issue. GPX files can be straight from the PQ or from GSAK. They both work fine, other than the aforementioned bug.
  17. This sounds like fun. Too bad it's on the same day as two geocaching classes being held by the Portland area geocaching club (GEO - Geocachers Exploring Oregon). Since I am teaching, I'll have to be there instead of here. Do this again, sometime; or hook up with members of our group and maybe we can do one together! Thanks for supporting and encouraging Portland area geocaching! It's what we like to do, too. 3MudDogs, GEO President
  18. The group formerly known as Clackamas Geocaching Association has changed it's name. In order to better represent our members that come from all over the Portland metro area (and not just Clackamas County), our members elected to change our name to Geocachers Exploring Oregon or GEO. You can check us out at GEOregon.com. Look for our monthly events in and around the Portland metro area.
  19. Can you please fix the tab order issue on the logging page, too? I used to hit tab four times to get to the log text box; now I can't even figure out where the tab goes. Depending on when I catch the refresh, it's somewhere between 6 and 13 tabs to get back to the log text box. Thanks.
  20. What happened to the event calendar? The locations with events are no longer listed and the links are dead.
  21. I'm able to read pdf books on my touch using the free app 'Discover' Thanks that's what I thought...... It seems that I should be able to save the cache page as a PDF and pull it up to read when needed. I could also update it every so often by just replacing the file with new info. Thanks again, I trying to decide between the iTouch and a PDA. If you want to do paperless caching, get a PDA. Download 1000s of caches in as many files as you want (or your card will hold) and read the pages any time without internet access.
  22. No problem. Glad it was an easy fix. One thing I learned recently ... As you may know, geocaching.com will only drop the last 5 logs into a .gpx file. I used to just load that directly to my PDA. But GSAK will "stack" the logs. So if you download a file each week, GSAK will keep adding the logs at the bottom. Then, if you export the .gpx from GSAK and drop that file onto the PDA, you'll have many more logs than just 5. I drop my .gpx files onto an SD card to allow for plenty of space. Happy caching. Sue
  23. Helga, I use both GSAK and GPX Sonar on a Dell Axim. All you need to do is copy the .gpx file (directly from geocaching.com or an exported one from GSAK) to the mobile device. On a Windows PC, use Windows Explorer to move/copy the file, just like you would copy any file from one drive to another. Let me know it that doesn't get it for you. I do this all the time. Sue

  25. Sorry that everyone seems to have gotten off track on your original post. There is a lot of interest in the Tritons, so everyone wants to talk about them. I've been geocaching for almost 5 years with my Magellan Sportrak Pro. I love it. I also love that you have selected caching as an activity for you and your daughter. I'm not a mom, but am known as the "cool aunt" in my family and have cached many times with my niece. She loves it and I enjoy our time together in the outdoors. One of our caching days became her "most fun adventure" story for a school assignment. To answer your question, I have recomended the Explorist 210 to the last two friends that have purchased GPSs to cache with. And personally, I plan to purchase a Triton 500 once they have been out awhile and have good reviews. (See other posts for all the news regarding the software and distribution issues.) So I think you are right on track with your selections. If you are in a hurry, get the Explorist 210; if you can wait 2-3 months, wait for the Triton 500.
