  1. How about adding a feature (perhaps for premium users) that provides a map showing

all the owned caches of a member accessible from their profile page- example- I

click on john q cacher's profile page, select the tab to see all of

his caches, and click a button to see them plotted on google maps?

Am posting here to see if there is any interest - Perhaps a feature would be to let the profile owner turn on or off this option.

    Tahoe_Loren :(

The basic idea is neat to think about, but there is a way to do this as it is. It does require some work, but you can create a BM for al the caches that one person ownes and then create a PQ off that and view it in google earth or google maps. I created one of my own caches and created a map. I may use it on my profile after shrinking it down a little, but I don't see this as a feature that likely every going to happen in the suggested form. As I said, neat idea...

I'd like to do that for just caches I've found--and they are scattered across the US.

It'd be a sea of yellow smilies where I live, and then more sparse as the radius increased.

There may be a way to do that and/or what Tahoe_Loren described using macro's in GSAK.

  2. I will be buying this as soon as it is posted on iTunes. This is awesome. Time to sell my Garmin on Ebay.

For those looking to download their lists to their iPhone, try iGeocacher, I currently have 2500 caches loaded and use it constantly seeing how there are many places where I live that I don't have a cell phone signal. Works like a champ.

I agree with wkendfun--folks should look at ALL the geocaching apps available in iTunes. The iGeoCacher

native app is well supported, and works in 'no bars' remote locations.

  3. I searched these forums for the same kind of information about a month ago and did nlocate a web app that allows cache info to be exported to either an iphone or a itouch without jailbreaking. However because it is considered commercial, posting about it in the forums was considered unacceptable. You may find it by looking for it specifically in the web apps/games directory of the company that markets the iphone and itouch. HTH--SpinningCompass

First of all, I own an iPod Touch, not an iPhone, so I do not have iPhone connectivity. If a Geocaching solution requires a cellular signal, it won't work for me.

I appreciate the efforts of those trying to make a Geocaching solution. Hopefully, by the time third party apps are allowed by Apple (without hacking your iPhone/iTouch) these will be fairly robust tools.

Right now, the only Macintosh solution I know of to get geocaching info into my unhacked iPod Touch is to use MacCaching to import a .LOC or .GPX file, and then export the cache(s) to vCard (iPod Contacts) format. This will create a separate address book entry for each cache.

I'm pretty sure the same functionality is available in a Windows solution as well, but haven't researched it. You would just need a geocaching program that can import .LOC or .GPX data, and then export data into vCard format.

Don't bother exporting in the "iPod Notes" format, as the iTouch doesn't allow you to import notes, like the other old-style iPods do. If you have an older scroll-wheel iPod, you could use iPod Notes.

  4. Jailbreaking the iphone or itouch is described in a number of sites. But so far this app is the only one I've found which can do it via an email and does not require invalidating your warranty.

I've established a Yahoo group dedicated to hints, tricks, and suggestions for the igeocacher software

for iphone and itouch paperless geocaching.

Hopefully it will allow folks to discuss "how to's" and "couldn't this feature be provided".

  5. I've managed to get html cache pages that I generate from GSAK onto the itouch.

Its a matter of basically sending them via wifi with cuteftp pro into a folder on the itouch. Then after installing a copy of apache server on the itouch just opening the link on the itouch safari.

No mess no fuss. and no wifi etc needed once your out on the road. Its all stored on the itouch.

I am going away for the weekend but when I get back I'll write up a tutorial on how to do it.

It does require jailbreaking the itouch though.

  6. Hi--I traded email about this with Don some time ago.

Unfortunately it appears that Apple will only support WiFi interfaces for applications, and bluetooth is

reserved solely for the earphone/mike of a headset.

I am waiting for the next iPhone, probably June. Is there any chance that the app can be expanded to be like GeoNiche on a Palm? That is, in addition to managing the cache info, it could receive data from a BT GPSr and give you the direction and distance to a selected cache? That's what I would like.

  7. Hi again Don--a couple of other user questions--it seems that whenever I try to upload gpx files to a different data set than the default #1, I have to reselect the alternate data set location as I send each file. Could the application be configured to leave where the data is to be uploaded as the 'last selected'?

Also, is there some way to select and upload all files in a directory instead of having to do each one individually?

    Thanks--

    Steve

  8. Howdy--Don posted a note last night indicating that logs now work on the App.

I tried them this morning, and can view the first 5. Of course the 'answer' is always 10 or 15 logs further down!

But 5 is still really heppful!

    Happy caching!

    Hey Don,

Your iPhone app is great. I was never happy with the software on my Palm. I checked out the YouTube video and purchased it right away. I have played around with it for about 24 hours and it is REALLY NICE, especially the integration with the maps. I was dying to go out and find some caches yesterday, but it was raining all day. I can't wait to take this puppy on the road.

One question, though, is there a way to view logs? They are mentioned at the bottom of the cache page, but there is no link. Sometimes the logs provide that last hint I need when I am really stumped.

Thanks again for all your hard work!

  9. Hi Don--I gave the application trial runs last night, and again today geocaching at lunch.

It worked perfectly 'right out of the box'. I love the features, and won't be printing out paper lists any

more. On a whim I dropped in 2 geocaches just before leaving the office tonight, and then chased them down using just my phone and the gps on the way home. 2 for 2!

I like your application a lot.

    Thanks--Steve

Thanks for opening this Forum topic Don.

I'll give your application a test drive tonight, and be pleased to report back with observations and (more likely)

    questions on use.

    Cheers--Steve

You are most welcome, Steve. By all means do so. Be sure and check out the You Tube walk-through. This app isn't quite two weeks old yet and already I've doubled if not tripled the feature function set based upon user feedback. I can't wait to get out again this weekend. It rained here in NC last weekend which was bad for caching but good for programming (g).

There are a number of us that are using the iPhone for paperless geocaching and I thought I'd start a new topic as a landing place for us to discuss how we use this marvelous device, software we've found for it, tip, techniques, workarounds, etc. Anything having to do with using the iPhone (or even the iPod Touch) for paperless geocaching.

  11. I just acquired an iPhone, and am trying to make use of it.

I downloaded gpsbabel, and tried to use it on my first PQ to convert the result to VCF's.

It did convert the PQ to a VCF, but since all of this is new to me I have lots of questions.

I'd love to discuss "how to's" off line with someone who has been down this route, and would be happy to

post a complete "how to" once its working.

    Help?

    Thanks--Steve (SpinningCompass)

Are you going online or are you using the LOC files to look up hints w/o going on line?

I use an iPhone now for paperless but I did use a Nokia N770 internet tablet. They're pretty inexpensive and what is nice is if you are near a hotspot you can get online.
