  1. I'm amazed that parts of this thread have become an argument. Then again, maybe I shouldn't be ... it seems to be a trend lately. Looks like it's time to go find some caches.
  2. Yes, it does let you know, but how often did you really need to know? And if you did reach that point, wouldn't you have then wanted someone to actually move it? Just throwing that out there. That's a good point. I think we all always want them to move toward their goal. How often? For me, not very often. The only times I've wanted to know if my TB was still in a cache was if I had seen issues with a cache in which it was placed. I have one now that has fallen inside a metal fence pipe at Ichiro in Seattle and can't be retrieved. Guess that one won't be moved or discovered!
  3. It's a place where disgruntled geocachers go to place a cache.
  4. OK let's say there are five travel bugs in a cache and someone discovers all five of them. Or lets say there are ten travel bugs in a cache and someone discovers all ten of them without moveing five feet away from the cache do you think that is right? Boy it sure looks great on your profile. Hello Better to discover them than take them and not move them toward their goal. Someone may also see them and not even discover them. Would that be more wrong to you? I don't personally care what someone's profile looks like. If you care about yours, then do what's "right" for you. First - do no harm. Next, play the game as you see fit withing the guidelines (there are no rules) using the tools and options provided and have a good time doing so. See the text you quoted? Hello
  5. Mix it up. Do something different. You're far too creative to re-use the same design. hey ... How about a newt?
  6. I haven't read all the links to the story, but I was wondering how they found the cache? Did I understand correctly that they just stumbled onto the cache in the winter on that mountain? If not, then what did they use to find it? And does that make this a caching trip gone bad and not just a hiking trip? If so, maybe they should post a Needs Maintenance note on the cache page so the owner can go hide it better. Seriously - it's good to hear they got out. I heard they were up there, but I hadn't heard they were picked up. Even though they were experienced and in an area they knew, wouldn't that experience lead them to take the locators? Maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't jump out of a plane without a parachute or raft a class VI without a PFD, either. Guess maybe I'm just uninformed?
  7. Yesterday I received a South Pointing Chariot.
  8. Personally, I don't think discovering hurt anything. Those that are wiling to move a TB will do so. Those that won't now have a choice to discover it or leave it alone.
  9. TRADE MADE I'll not say the details of it, other than this person seems to be quite happy about the answer. Many exclamation points and capitals letters were exchanged I feel confident the new owner will be just as happy about this coin as I was. Thanks very much for all the offers. They were quite generous. TMA I'll offer you 56 coins... 10 are earth turtles, 10 are copper templars, 10 are RFJ v1 silver and 10 are RFJ v1 gold. The other 16 are from 2001-2004 Golly! Now where did I lay that M10B v3??
  10. That's less than 30 miles from me. I almost went there last weekend but plans got changed. Not sure about anyone else in the area, but I may be able to get out there in the next couple weeks. If I can, I'd be happy to help out.
  11. A couple weeks ago the positive battery terminal snapped on my GPSMap 76CSx when I removed a battery to recharge it. Called Garmin and had an RMA number in less than 10 minutes. Two days after they received it I had a replacement unit. Yep - I'd make a commercial for them any time.
  12. hmmmmm ... would I buy a Scout themed coin? hmmmmm ... think, think, think ... If you can make money at it, go for it. Any profit is good profit, but you'll probably make more on a different activity. edit: If you can get the boys involved, take the opportunity to teach them some basic business, finance, and customer service skills. I bet there's a badge in there somewhere ...
  13. I had a coinmail package take six months to go a distance I could have driven to in under 3 hours. You never know ...
  14. Sort of ... I can readily think of two : KYOHWV and MAGPI, but I'm pretty sure there are some more. There are groups in Maryland (but I forget their name/URL), Pennsylvania (Trigo and PAGA), Ohio (NEOGEO), and others that also cover areas of WV. Good luck!
  15. That's a good idea. I have a GPSMap 76CSx and can place some info on the startup screen. I think I'll do that this evening.
  16. Me too, and I'm still waiting for my service pack.
  17. I believe that was me. To be clear - I NEVER intended for the meaning of that post to be interpreted that way. Between my father, my son, and me we have over 100 years in the program. I'm pretty sure I know what Thrift means as it relates to Scouting. I do NOT think you are robbing anyone. I meant that I watch my spending and the cost of the coin is more than I particularly want to pay. I apologize for not proof reading and clarifying my original post. I fully support selling coins as a fundraising opportunity and have some of the Hoxie Scout and Crew 4485 coins in my collection. If I recall each of those cost less than $12 delivered and they sold pretty well. I wish your troop equal or better success in their fundraising efforts. Regarding the coin design, I think some folks are confusing the design with the content. I don't want to speak for Atwell (or anyone else), but I can see his point. The back of the coins looks darn near identical - the same font is used, a scroll for the tracking number, and two R/W/B fleurs in the same positions. Sure, it may be a simple coincidence. But if I saw something so close to my design on another coin I'd question it also. In a previous post there are images of a lot of different designs using the same or similar content - but they are designed differently. It's good to hear that your council doesn't have a problem with your use of the images. That can save a lot of headaches and allow you to focus on the selling of your coins. Some councils - and National - do have issues with the use of their images even for unit use. I think Atwell was only trying to offer some advice based on his learnings from the making of his coin. As I said earlier, I hope you guys get it worked out and you're successful in raising money for your unit. YiS
  18. Looking forward to whatever someone would like to trade me for my personal.
