  1. So, you mean I can't understand because I don't OWN a cache? That's pretty silly. You really don't have to own a cache to understand the train wreck of a topic that this is. And I guess the five I owned and gave up for adoption so they could be maintained on a more regular basis gives me no experience in cache ownership, do they? oh ... that's right. You wouldn't know that. Mostly because you don't have any clue about how I play the game in my area or my personal history with caching. You also don't know that I help maintain other caches, do you? Come on now - sling another arrow so it can go off target, too.
  2. Geocaching is probably the cheapest hobby I have. Photography is my most expensive, and my hiking/camping activities are somewhere in the middle.
  3. So you know how I feel about this, do you? Go ahead. If my account means that much to you, go right ahead and check it. Big deal. You're too busy feeling offended that you missed my point. Go ahead. Make yourself feel better. Getting a bigger keyboard is going to help spelling as much as deleting logs will stop this practice. I'm not against it (as you may believe) I just don't see it stopping anything. You talk in absolutes and this game doesn't exist that way. People are going to do what they want, how they want. As a cache owner, you control whether or not you will delete any log. As a cache finder, you control whether or not you will log something you really found or not. Want to question how I play or how I log and what I believe in about this game? Let's go caching together sometime and I'll show you.
  4. What about those who spell poorly or use bad grammar? Are they also considered losers? Aren't they causing pain and suffering by making others read their gibberish? That is also becoming a common practice. I'll never understand why someone else's stats mean so much to other people. If the event owner doesn't want the temps logged several times it's up to them to control it just like any other cache owner. Make it known in the event description, in the temp cache logs, at registration, etc.
  5. Oh, please. There are probably a fair number of the "wishy washy" types that would like the hardliners to gradually disappear, too. There are no "rules" and it's not a sport. There are guidelines. It's a game of hide and seek. It's good that it's flexible and people can play their own way - you, me, anyone. But if you think "hardline rules" are in anyway going to change irresponsible behavior I think you will be severely disappointed.
  6. I agree that everyone should play by the guidelines and play fair (trade even/trade up, sign the log), but has this game really become THAT serious?
  7. Someone tried to lock one here. First time I ever heard the phrase "gun muggle an ammo can", but it looks like the lock held up.
  8. Maybe take the info out of the hint and place it in the description. Make it clear they shouldn't enter your neighbor's property. Give them additional waypoints and instructions on an alternative entry point to the cache location. Put sign on the fence that reads "Geocachers need not enter here". Personally I think their behavior was a bit irresponsible, but no matter how hard you try, you just can't fix stupid.
  9. No coins, but I got Backpacker Mag's 2008 gear guide. Fun reading on a cold day.
  10. I use a blackberry 8830, Garmin GPSMap 76CSx, Mobipocket reader, and GSAK. Get a pocket query Read the file into GSAK Run a macro to export the file to Mobi Export the files to Mapsource (or send them direct to the GPS) Place the Mobi ebook file on my 8830 Import the Mapsource file ot my GPS This gives me a solution similar to Palm/Cachemate/GPS bundle. It sounds involved, but it takes less then ten minutes once you have the pocket query and it works great for loading a group of caches. edit: all of the files are easy to get - even the macro. This discussion mentions some of the tools and has links. The more Blackberry info was added to the topic after September, 2007.
  11. It is possible to use the site to find caches and locations and then choose not to log them. A person can be a very prolific user of the site and just not log the activity. It is another way some play the game. I don't know if that is what this person is doing and I'm not speaking for them, but there is an alternative. Personally, I've been playing since 2003 and haven't logged 300 finds in over 4 years. There are several caches I have found and not logged. I play at a different pace and for reasons I enjoy. Sometimes I filter out the micros, sometimes I don't. And yes - I generally subscribe to the "don't like it, don't look for it" premise. My point is, just because they aren't logging them, doesn't mean they don't encounter them.
  12. Travel bugs (and geocoins) are meant to move toward a goal set by their owner. Take as many as you can and will move, leave the others for someone else and discover them if you wish. Happy caching!
  13. That's a neat link - thanks for posting it.
  14. Yes, it's weird. Understandable, but weird.
  15. So how was the trip with the kids? Did they enjoy the hike and the time spent together? Funny that the day not being a complete loss is judged by other caches found and hidden. Not every person finds every cache. Sounds like the desire for a FTF overcame your desire to avoid micros. Don't hunt caches you don't like. Log the DNF and move on. And no. I'm not particularly a fan of micros. But I do know how to look at a cache page and decide whether or not I want to hunt for it.
  16. Have you suggested they try a long stiff wire with a hooked end? Or a magnet on a string or on the end of a long thin stick? I've had some emails from some very kind folks who have tried to retrieve that TB and the other items that fell into the abyss. They have tried several things but with no luck. Guess I may have an excuse to wander on out to Seattle and give it a try myself!
  17. If they discover it they are going to leave it. That is the problem Why is it a "problem"? If it sat in a cache until a cacher picked it up, what problem do the intermediate discover logs cause until it is moved by someone who wants to do so? No one has an obligation to move a TB just because they find one. Also, the TB will only be in the possession of one cacher at a time. If a group finds the cache should those that do not log the pick up also not log their discovery? I think this is one of the situations for which the option was created.
  18. Yeah, I don't currently use TC.com...however, the obstacle of "sponsorship", from what I hear, isn't anything major. In fact, they have an adoption program if I understand correctly for new members. I know from other Iowa cachers the perception is there are more terracache's than navicache's, but this is purely second hand info. and could easily vary by location. The only problem I had with sponsorship was that mine was pulled after not visiting the site after a few months. Defintely liked it better than the navicache site.
