  1. I'm in the UK, after 5.30pm here, will try tomorrow if still a problem. I've accessed the maps via the card in base camp connected to my Mac, so they are accessible, but for some reason neither of my GPS units can read them. Very strange.
  2. Apologies if this has come up before, I've looked and can't see any definitive help. I've just purchased Garmin Discoverer GB Premium on microSD card, and according to the website, the packaging etc., it should be plug and play. However, I've inserted it into a Montana 650t and then an Oregon 600 (both of which quite happily read other Garmin Discoverer maps) and both units come up with the error "Can't Unlock Maps" when I boot them up. I've tried updating to the latest firmware, so that's all up to date and not the issue. I've mailed Garmin support, but thought this forum might be of use. Any advice?
  3. Getting to ground zero and finding the area has been trashed by cachers searching (normally for a nano in a tree/ivy/bush with no hint and bad coorsd).
  4. I'm surprised (And quite disappointed ) that we didn't bump into smstext during our stay as we were there at the same time. I've just finished my 4 blog posts for our adventures away in Devon. I said I'd PM you, but there are loads of details and pictures in the blog posts that I think will help you. In summary, the best two caches were the Saunton Pink Erratic earth cache, and the 'Look into the light' mine cache (The one smstext refers to that they unfortunately didn't get to). We did the Below the Belt and top half of the Way Down West trails, a few in Ilfracombe, and the Puzzle Classics series, plus a few here and there. Details are on the blog here: http://geocass.wordpress.com. Hope it helps! Enjoy your stay, hope you get better weather than we did!!! Thanks, I'll take a look!
  5. Hi I think an event at the HAGM would be a good idea, I had a walk round last year after doing a bit of city centre caching (I know every nut and bolt of the new extension, as I worked for a building contractor who tendered for the work.....but we didn't win it...) Looking at your timescales, you would need an event pretty much right away if you were to use the event to release the TB's and give them some time to get mileage, and to get a decent turn out at an event, it's always best to give a bit of notice (especially at the moment with holidays etc). There are lots of cachers in the Coventry/ Warwickshire area, and plenty from Birmingham who would no doubt attend an event.
  6. When are you visiting? If you're going after us then I can tell you any that we find that are worth visiting, or if you're going after us we would appreciate a few pointers if you find any good 'uns! I'll be there from 18th August, and staying for 8 nights Thanks for the recommendations so far people!
  7. I'm off to North Devon for a week in August, I've done a PQ and plotted them all in Memory Map. I can see the obvious, the figure of eight 100+ Way Down West series, and the 2 other series of about 30 caches nearby. I'm not necessarily going to yomp around "for the numbers" (although I may do!), and caches elsewhere seem to be dotted about in nice locations. So.....any recommendations for caches that I need to put top of the list? I'm staying on the western edge of Exmoor, so I can easily access all the north Devon coast and Exmoor
  8. Big shame, loved that map! I too have struggled with the GSAK version, will have to try again now!
  9. Or if it's appeared as a YOSM, look here too. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...07cc3&log=y
  10. You've all convinced me :-) I've ordered one!
  11. Clicky The link is for a US website, does anyone know of a UK supplier? I've googled and tried the usual suspects but couldn't see anything.
  12. I don't see any reason why not if the TB in question has a specific mission that you can help with. If you do I would log a note on the cache listing to say that you have visited and taken the TB to move on, just for housekeeping!
  13. The largest, and possibly the most memorable and bizarre, cache I've ever found was GC1BZJY Dave - Looking out for his Brother. Sadly now archived, but I think the "container" has been re-used somewhere else.
  14. But not for caches along a route it seems. The PQ set up different and it defaults to 500 max.
  15. The only map you will see on the Oregon is any that are installed on the unit. So if you are relying on the (very) basic basemap, it won't be alot of use. The obvious suggestion is putting TalkyToaster's free maps on the GPS if you don't have any other maps on there already (plenty of threads on that subject), that will do the job nicely and will even direct you to the nearest road.
  16. I'd just send them another e-mail, and be honest; tell them you can't remember whether you contacted them last week or not. I'm sure they'll understand!
  17. HazelS is quite right, there does appear to have been alot of complaining on here recently, so how about something lighthearted? I know it won't happen, but what if our curious hobby became an Olympic event? Suggestions for categories etc...the more bizarre the better
  18. I had a camoflaged micro (actually it was a bit bigger than a micro) go missing. Someone posted a photo of the cache they found on their log....a 35mm film pot.... I left a rather "harsh" note on the cache page as the original container cost me £8 and I was not happy, and the cacher who swapped it actually swapped it back again! I can't know for certain who it was, but reading the logs, I have a pretty good idea it was a newbie young cacher who perhaps didn't know better.
  19. I've also got an Oregon 300, and have had an iPhone since they were released. I've got the GC app installed, but have used it only a couple of times, it works, and I found the tupperware, but I prefer the Oregon. On the occasions I have used it, it's been for urban caching. If you can afford to pay for the app on the premise that you might not use it, go for it.
  20. I like it too, cleaner and crisper and a bit less cluttered on certain pages. My FindStatsGen info looks a bit odd in places, but has survived intact!
  21. You just get that warm fuzzy feeling of being first. Occasionally you might find a FTF prize (a badge, or even an unactivated geocoin), but these are at the discretion of the cache owner and aren't the norm. Alot of people list their FTF's on their profile, either by typing them in manually or using a stats generator like FindStatsGen in GSAK.
  22. I've also found this site while browsing about the OS maps news, Bing maps, that show OS maps, and you can enter coords to find a spot on the map. Useful for checking the location of a puzzle! Link
  23. I'm not sure what this will mean for GPS mapping.... Link
  24. As I write this I am nervously glancing around expecting the forum police to grab me and take me away, as I've probably put this in the wrong section of the forum, but here goes anyway. I use an Oregon, and upload field notes on returning home. I've noticed that the last 3 times I have uploaded field notes, once I have converted them all to logs, and go back to my account page, there is a pink bar that says "You currently have pending field notes. Visit your field notes page to review these notes", but when I click on the link, there are no outstanding field notes. It does disappear after a while though. Anyone else had this? (It has happened on 2 different PC's, if that means anything)
