  1. Sounds like your GPS accuracy has changed not the electronic compass. The electronic compass only points direction not distance. The GPS determines distance. Many factors influence GPS accuracy, some you can control but most you cannot.
  2. You are correct; I do not use a mac. You are also correct in what I presume you intended to say; There is more than one way to skin a cat. I interpreted that the Original Poster is using the Send To method to load caches since the OP wanted to only remove a few caches and additionally they removed the caches by deleting multiple gpx files. My intent was to inject the option of Pocket Queries to the OP. Wouldnt it be nice if Groundspeak would add a Remove from GPS button on the cache pages? I apologize if I came off as an elitist but try to present the method of skinning that works best for me. @ GeoTrekker26, at the risk of being labeled an elitist, I could never recommend loading cache files in the internal memory of a paperless handheld Garmin GPS if you have external memory. It looks like you already know why but for those who dont: The newer Garmin handheld paperless GPSes continue to be plagued with a random loss of cache data during startup. The only way to fix it is to modify the gpx files or remove the gpx file, startup, shutdown, replace gpx files, startup. This requires a computer to correct if you keep the gpx files in internal memory. There is lots of sadness when your caching day is ended prematurely. The gpx files are easily removed by removing the memory card if you store them there resulting in an easy fix out in the field.
  3. But there is no logical reason that I’ve found to delete individual caches from a GPS while leaving old stale cache data behind (manage PQ’s). The only thing that makes since to me is to replace all data to update your found caches, logs, cache status, etc. Might keep you from wasting your time looking for a cache that’s not there or missing a new cache that was just placed. That’s the beauty of PQ’s. Right click, extract to microSd and you’re done in the time it takes BaseCamp to open.
  4. Or better yet use Pocket Queries.
  5. While you are moving the GPS uses the satellites to identify your change in location and calculate your direction. When you move very slowly or stop the electronic compass shows direction. Sounds like your compass needs calibrated. You are supposed to calibrate the compass every battery change since the batteries effect the compass calibration. Or you could turn off the electronic compass.
  6. Do not email Garmin unless you are a very patient person. It could take weeks to do the same communication that could be done on phone in less than an hour. Phone is the only way I would recommend. 800-800-1020, Monday–Thursday: 8 AM – 6 PM, Friday 8 AM – 5 PM Central Time (closed holidays).
  7. See the Garmin Wiki's. I’ve linked the Oregon Wiki since it’s the most comprehensive. All newer Garmin paperless handheld GPS’s have very similar operating systems but differ in form factor. There is an etrex wiki but you’ll find the Oregon Wiki more informative.
  8. Garmin Topo U.S. 24K – West .img map file should be named gmapsupp.img and should be a 1.8 Gb file. According to the Garmin website “This download only may be used on 1 compatible device”. The GPS must be connected and communicating thru Garmin Communicator during the download to be unlocked to the GPS. The preloaded MicroSD version would be locked to the serial number of the MicroSd card and will not work on another memory card. Another possible problem could be that the MicroSD holder is not locked causing poor connection. The holder must be flipped down over the MicroSD then slide the holder to lock. Look for the word “Lock” and the direction arrow on the holder.
  9. Or you could use the method that the GPS was designed around, PQ’s (pocket queries). You filter out your found and inactive geocaches in your PQ’s. You run your PQ’s once a week and send them to your GPS. The new PQ over writes the old PQ if the files are named the same. All found caches are gone and all unfound caches including newly placed caches are now loaded. All inactive caches are gone so you aren’t looking for something that isn’t there.
  10. The internal GPX registry is what gets corrupted. Remove memory (removes all GPX files), start GPS (writes 0 caches to registry), shutdown GPS, replace memory (replaces GPX files) and restart (writes caches back to registry).
  11. Very easy to fix in the field if you keep your gpx files on your external memory.
  12. They did at one point.... But you know how Garmin likes to add and remove features with each firmware release. I will conduct some of my own research and report back... I only know about this because I read about it somewhere else, and used it successfully with my Oregon 300/450.... Now I have a Montana 650, and I have shortcuts that accomplish the same function ;-) Shortcuts? that do what? and How? Hes referring to shortcuts on the Montana. Its a super slick feature that lets you create user defined settings (profiles, routing, maps, display screens, etc) that you change with a single tap on the shortcut icon. Example, I have an Automotive shortcut. I tap the Automotive shortcut and the GPS jumps to Automotive profile, map page displayed, turns off WAAS, backlight 100%, backlight stays on, City Navigator map, turn by turn routing, etc. Its pretty much the same settings as my nuvi. I can navigate to a cache with turn by turn spoken directions. When I get close to the cache I tap the X to go back to the main menu and a second tap on my Geocaching shortcut. This changes the GPS to the Geocaching profile, map page displayed with geocaching dashboard, turns on WAAS, backlight 100% for 2 minutes, Garmin 24K Northeast Map, direct routing, etc. Find the cache, log my results, back to car, tap X, tap Automotive shortcut and Im ready to navigate to the next cache.
  13. Exactly what I was thinking and “geocaching”!
  14. The Garmin 40lm is a very basic automotive navigation GPS. So yes, you are trying to use the wrong GPS to geocache. Go to the start page, touch and hold your finger on the signal icon for about 5 seconds. This makes most nuvi’s display a satellite page with your location coords.
  15. There was a Mac version of Communicator released that fixed this. Maybe a beta version?
  16. You can't. Only electronic compasses need calibrated. The Dakota 10 does not have an electronic compass.
  17. No bugs or complaints here with my Montana other than an occasional GPX crash during startup. No big deal if you keep your GPX files on the external memory.
  18. Assuming you are using Garmin City Navigator North America NT you need to change the map detail setting. If you change over to the Automotive Profile you should see something very similar to your nuvi.
  19. You should be able to connect to your PC in forced USB mode to do the recovery linked by Atlas Cached above.
  20. Remove all GPX files and do a clean boot. If that doesn’t work try a master reset.
  21. "S" is for SiRF, "m" or no letter would be MediaTek. Watch the display as the GPS boots and it will tell you what you have.
  22. North America NT 2013.20 released today. Available at your myGarmin.com.
