  1. Its an option on one of the menus (compass menu?) that lets you set a speed and "time at that speed" that the electronic compass will take over. I think the default is like 90 seconds and 10mph so most walkers should pretty quickly be using the electronic over the move direction.

Forgive me for being so dense here, but I recently switched from a Magellan to Garmin and have the jumping needle problem, and I do not know what Hint #5 means. How does a person raise the speed below which the electronic compass takes over?

  2. It sounds like you are really having trouble with your 60csx is it true that you have traded it in 3 times?

Lets try to find out if its a setting or something else.

    1) have you downloaded the latest firmware with webupdater? This is very important.

    2) is your lock on road turned OFF. You dont want the gps snapping you to the nearest road when trying to find that offroad cache.

    3) Are you holding your gps flat (looking down at it with the antenna pointed the direction you are walking?

I bought a new Garmin 60csx about 5 weeks ago & I am thoroughly disgusted with it. Not only am I having the problem with the compass needle disappearing, but when it is working, it is totally inaccurate. Can't find a blasted thing with it, so I'm forced to use my old, worn out Magellan sportrak Pro to guide me to the cache.

If I recalibrate a minimum of 2 times, then it will finally point the right way, but not before I've walked a huge amount of distance that is totally wrong for the cache location. I don't mind recalibrating, but the problem is knowing when it needs to be done. I can't ever just assume once I get to where the cache site is, that it is in fact the right location & distance. In most cases the cache is within 250-300 feet, but I'm walking 1/2 mile or more, following the stupid GPS. I've had to give up on several occasions because with the weather being so hot recently, I start to wilt & get very frustrated with not being able to find the cache in a reasonable amount of time.

I think the 60csx is not nearly as good as the 60C & I surely wish I had bought that one instead. I love the mapping of the csx, but I can live without all the extra maps, as long as I have most of OR in there.

Right off the bat, the csx locked up & wouldn't turn on. Then after much fiddling, I could turn it on, but not off! Luckily the dealer I bought it from exchanged it for another, but I think I should have just went with a Magellan & been done with it.

Has anyone else had similar problems?

    Thanks,

    QK

  3. As long as you have money in your account the bank will cash it...

If the check is bad then they take the money from your account to cover.

All EBAYer's listen up!!! When someone sends you a check or MO for an item you are selling dont send the item until the check has CLEARED!!! This is a common rip off!!!! You loose the item and get no money!

The deadline was 07/0906 and I mailed mine Certified Mail on the 9th. They received it on the 11th and I got an e-mail on the 21th stating they had received it and gave me a tracking #. A month later I get the check, which was sort of unusual. It was a postcard! Never saw anything like this before (I don't get out too much). No problem at the bank though. I thought they might want to "hold" it until it cleared, but they asked if I wanted to cash it or deposit it. I had actually forgotten about it.

BTW I went back 5 pages to find the original "Rebate" thread, but I couldn't find it.

  4. I think, even more to the point, that this was a JOKE and given that, he can take certain liberties with the technical details.

    I loved it!!!

The photo is of a directional antenna, with gain in one direction. We need omni-directional antennas, like a Quad-helix, patch or Eggbeater II........

More to the point, this is a stationary antenna, and will only report the position of the antenna no matter how long the cable is.

  5. I would just point out that Lowrance left me high and dry when my 10yr lithium battery died on my airmap100 when it was two years old.

I loved the lowrance otherwise but dont expect them to do anything for your after your warranty is out (unlike Garmin).

    Todd

Have you looked at the lowrance units? They are pretty big in the marine area. I have an ifinder H20 c and its screen is huge. Might be worth a look

For a relatively small company, Lowrance is fabulous and cutting edge. I used to own their first mapping unit that could download from their CD of marine maps. I think it was a Map Pro, or something like that. It came out around '96 or '97 and was the first in the industry. What I'm looking for now is a handheld with a large screen. I just don't know wether to Magellan now that Thales in France owns them. Nothing against the French, of course ;).

  6. Wait a second..I think Lowrance uses SIRF I and is pretty darn sensitive. If never losing lock is our criteria then you need a lowrance or a Garmin. If you want to autoroute then you need the garmin

Unfortunately right now, the only was to get the sensitivity of the 60csx is to actually BUY either the 60cx or 60csx (or their larger bretheren the 76 series). The SiRf III reciever in the 60cx/76cx/60csx/76csx series is not duplicated in any other GPS at this time, including the Rino. The only difference between the said 60/76cx and the 60/76csx series is the S series adds an electronic compass and barometric altimeter and cost about $50 more. But for geocaching the electronic compass can be a big help at times.

I am not looking for a unit as complicated as the 60csx, but would like something that could find me places other than in the middle of lake erie(the most common use of the etrex so far!). The rino, for example pairs a quad helix antenna with the 12 channel receiver(same as the etrex?), and I am curious if a unit like that maintains a better lock, in general.

    Thanks again.

  7. Mine did that once while doing a recalcuation across the country..I figured it had had to recalculate one to many times and it was too much for it.

Now I wonder what really cuased it?

I've had a similar problem that is definitely not battery related. When I turn a certain corner in Houston, my 60CSx simply turns off - every time. It even does it in demo mode! Garmin had no clue and suggested a submit it as a mapping problem. I did, except it does not happen with the 60CS that I also own. [been using City Select ver 7 - just got CN ver 8, so maybe the problem will not happen again. I sure hope it's not my 60CSx!]

There is an area like that in a park in Seattle. Every single time I have driven across one section it powes off, pluged in or not.

  8. Opinions I have seen give them very poor reviews compared to the newest handhelds.

Nice to have built in but also a limitation that way. Maps are expensive and not as good, functionality is not as good.

From what I've read, spend half the money and get a good garmin road unit like a 2720. This has been talked about on this forum but since the search feature stinks it may be lost to us. Try a search on here for pioneer...I think that one was mentioned.

Does anyone have any experience or opinions on a in dash GPS system like the ones offered by Pioneer?

  9. And in contrast to this, when my Lowrance airmap100's lithium battery went bad after two years (it was a 10 yr battery), Lowracne told me to go stick it.

I'm a happy Garmin owner now.

    Hi All -

just a quick note to tell everyone of a positive experience with Garmin. I recently purchased a 60Csx when my GPS III took a nose dive. The internal lithium battery wore out (I guess this was common among these units) so it was losing stored data upon every battery switch. I called Garmin to have this unit repaired so I could have a back up unit. Well the unit came back today with a new internal battery, upgraded software, and they completely replaced the 12V power cord which had a short in it - NO CHARGE. I am the original owner of the GPS III and it was almost 8 years old. I think this is wonderful customer service, almost unheard of in today's market.

I love my 60 Csx and will probably not use my GPS III all that much, but its nice to know I have a spare unit just in case.

    Thanks Garmin!

  10. Your right..this deserves more explaination from garmin...

I got a brand new 60csx and found this very problem on my first hike with the unit. The hike was an up and back hike, so the distance travelled should be the same for the up and down legs.

    Up the mountain leg:

    Odo = 3.76 miles

    Track log = 4.6 miles

Whole hike (Up leg plus down leg):

    Odo = 8.33 miles

    Track log = 9.2 miles

A little subtraction gives us the Down leg:

    Odo = 8.33 - 3.76 = 4.57 miles

    Track log = 9.2 - 4.6 = 4.6 miles

This is a somewhat streneous hike with 3850 feet of elevation gain.

So why is the odometer reading so much lower going up the mountain then it is going down? It's the same trail going up or down, so forest cover is the same. The main difference between the up hill leg versus the downhill leg is my speed. We took 4 hours (including breaks) going up, and 3 hours (including breaks) going down. Is there a minimum speed you need to be going before the odometer kicks in? According to the altitude profile, during the steep upper portion of the mountain we hike from the 7000 ft to 9500 ft in 1.64 miles. Gaining 2500 ft in 1.64 miles means we were going pretty slow. According to the track log this steep section took 2.5 hours (including breaks) to travel the 1.64 miles.

I find this problem rather surprising. My crappy old yellow etrex (version 2.14) GPS odometer is more accurate on a streneous hike then this new fancy 60csx unit.

  11. Looks like your the guniea pig....let us know.. :-)

    Do you fell lucky???

Has anyone tried to load CN8 on a preloaded unit(ie Nuvi)? Garmin's website says it wont work, but I'm just wondering if this is a ploy to keep people from using their 2 avilable unlock codes on their exisiting units. I have a 60csx and a Nuvi and just bought CN8. The nuvi has CN7 NT and I would like to update it.

  12. I did have my csx fade out on me and turn off once during a recalculation. Very strange behavior. Turned back on and it worked fine.

Anyone else? I think I've read this once before so it has to be some kind of bug....but what the heck would make it fade away like that????

This is the only complant I have about my Garmin eTrex Venture.

I can load it with maps with autorouting capibilities and do address searches around my county, but I can't do address searchs for areas outside of my county. For example, I live in San Diego and I wanted to plot a route to Seattle, Washington, but I could not type in the address even if I told the GPS that the address I was searching for was in Seattle. However, if I get on the map and manually find the address with the click stick, I can auto route to it just fine. It's really wierd that I can not type in an address outside of my county I am in.

I believe that the 60CSx initially had a problem like this, which was corrected in one of the first firmware updates. So make sure you have the latest firmware update, and submit a bug report to Garmin if you do.

  13. Is your GPS NT compatible?

I presently have City Select v7 and I was wondering if it worth to upgrade to City Navigator 8 or City Navigator 8 NT ?

Since I have 2 GPS will it be possible to register CN 8 or CN 8 NT on both of my GPS if I buy the full version not the upgrade version ?

I am wondering about the CN8 NT version over the CN8 version. Since the maps are more compress does it going to affect the redraw speed on the GPS Screen ?

I their semeone who have both version and made some test on the GPS to see if the NT version is slower to PAN and Zoom and to redraw compare to the CN8 version ? Or if their is a web site who test both the CN 8 version ?

    Thanks

  14. Gernerally, YOu need to tell it where its at initially using the map to give it some basic info on what to look for. Either that or there should be a mode for cold restart that tells it to start looking from scratch...this can take a long time.

I dont have an explorer so what I'm telling you may not apply but I think it does in general to all GPS's

I recently bought a warranted eagle explorer gps unit. I took it outside to initialize or cold start. got nowhere. There may be toomany trees or houses. unit is dgps ready. will that help?

  15. I thought I read on the garmin site that you were not allowed to upgrade to your second gps.

Meaning, you had an old gps with say version 4 on it...you then bought a 60csx and so loaded 4 onto it as well as your second GPS. Then you upgrade to 8 NT but you are not allowed to because your 60csx is your second gps.

Thisis the way I understood it....Am I wrong?

City Navigator V8 NT DVD can be bought right from Garmin off their website as I did. Came this week. You have to do a search for it though....they apparently don't want to sell it to badly.

    Try this:

    Steve

The upgrade version ($75) is not out yet...that's what most Garmin owners are looking for. The "First time loading" version ($139) appears to be out.

  16. From indiana to Clearwater works OK and also indiana to OK city.

I really think that if you have all the maps then it will do it from coast to coast. Longer routes, of course, take longer to calculate but even IN to FL was like 30 seconds or something like that.

    Something I've often wondered...

If you have a GPSr like a 60CSx and have a microSD card large enough to hold all the data for the whole USA, will the GPSr be able to route you the whole way across the country in one shot? Could I punch in my start as "Harrisburg, PA" and my finish as "San Diego, CA" and get the whole route up at once? Would it take a long time to calculate that route, if it could do it? Or would you need to break the route up into pieces in order for the unit to handle it?

I'm interested in knowing how various models of auto-routing GPSrs (car models and handhelds) would handle such a task. Anyone tried it?

I figure there's got to be a limit... but what is it?

  17. SO is NT for sure work on the csx version???

I just got a new Garmin GPSmap 76CSx. It came with CN 7.something.

Downloaded CN 8 NT last night, free. Took almost 2 hours to download, dialup at 44 Kbps. (Yawn!)

Took about an hour to send most of the East Coast to my new 1.0Gb SanDisk microSD through the included "microSD/TransFlash to SD Adapter." I did not attempt to fully load it, as it was getting late and I had trouble enough. Keep reading ...

Some of that time was consumed looking for the microSD itself after I managed to flip it out of the little case it came in onto the blue carpeted floor. Part of that time was spent moving the ever so joyful 88lb male Husky/Malemute cross out into another room before he had a chance to "help me" look for it. Then I had to listen to his complaints until I found the micro chip and got it safely in the adapter, and the adapter into my PC's SD slot.

Chip seems to work fine, readly locating cousins in Chicago, a friend in Kentucky, and my wife's alma mater in Indiana. :)

How exactly do you download "CN 8 NT...free"? I'd be happy enough buying it but nobody seems to be able to sell it to me... if there's a downloadable upgrade I'd buy CN 7.x and upgrade it.

City Navigator V8 NT DVD can be bought right from Garmin off their website as I did. Came this week. You have to do a search for it though....they apparently don't want to sell it to badly.

  18. I had a funny thing happen yesterday....I was watching my location then all of the sudden it was Way off the road...very weird...I watched and when I zoomed out it was back on the road... Very confused until I realized that I was looking at the north pointer when I was zoomed in and the location pointer was obscured by a road label (night mode).

Anyway, Just a laugh for you guys...

I have Wrap When Full turned ON

Set to AUTO, and MOST OFTEN

I have been getting good results with the 60Cx, and even my eXplorist XL is performing much better than any other Magellan with the Trip Odometer just about matching the Tracklog Distance.

I believe the 60Cx does have a more accurate Trip Odometer than the 60CSx.

  19. I've had mine fade out on me during a complex recalculation...anyone else?

    Very strange.

Did a roundtrip from the northern Detroit 'burbs to just outside downtown Pittsburgh yesterday with the 60CSx loaded with CN v.8. When I told it to 'go home' in Pittsburgh, the first time it tried to calculate the route the status bar counted up to 100% as usual, then after that it gave me the message "ROUTE CALCULATION ERROR". I did a recalc again and it came up with the correct route just fine. Has anyone gotten this message before, I haven't heard it mentioned? :D

And this was all through CN v.8 maps, no CN8 to base or base to CN8.

I've got that error several times. The only time calculating the route was if I was right in front of where I wanted to be. I'm not sure what the problem was. I went home and reset to all defaults. Then reloaded all my maps and routes. From then on it has worked. I knew it wasn't memory because I had a 1gig card in it and only a couple of map sets.

  20. Do you set your track breadcrumbs to 1sec when running? I got poor distance measurements until I did this. The track points would skip over long portions of the sweeping curve of a run that I did and I lost miles due to it.

I did a run less than an hour ago.

My Trip Odometer on the Map60Cx tends to be a hair over the Tracklog distance.

  21. So, I'm confused about this NT version of city navigator.

I see on the garmin site that the non NT version is avaliable as a direct purchase or an upgrade.

It turns out that you cant upgrade to the NT version on your second GPS so no upgrades for me I guess.

As anyone bought the NT version of city navigator yet? It looks like its the version you want as it compress's the maps better so more maps for less memory card.

Is this true and is eveyrone waiting for NT or just getting the regular version of CN8

  22. Vehical speedometers usually indicate a higher speed than the true speed as the manufactuers want to err or tne safe side. I'm surprised your is the opposite.

I see the same difference. The speed shown on my digital speedometer in my car is always approx 5 km/h (3 mph) lower than shown on my Garmin map60 Cx.

I did not, like you, measure which speed might be the correct one.

    Zilvervloot.

  23. I've never heard of mm in a compass. It would either be in degrees or radians or ordinal points like North or SouthWest and like that. mm is a linear measurement but degrees are circular like radians.

So what military application are you talking about...I'm curious??

    quote name='vertigojunky' date='Aug 7 2006, 02:56 PM' post='2391690']

I know the 60csx is capable of UTM and MGRS etc, but when switched to MGRS will the compass read in mm also? or does it remain in degrees? Is there a way to switch it to mm at all?

I only ask because it's important in regards to military aplications.

Thanks a bunch if anyone has any clue!

  24. Talked to Garmin today and they told me when getting a larger memory chip for the 60CSX you need a micro chip not a MINI disk or a micro II (2) the micro 2 will not work in the unit.

Has anyone else had this problem ?

What problem exactly? Did you buy a wrong style chip before you found out what to buy?

Garmin told you you needed a micro (or transflash) memory chip for the csx and to be sure not to get the microII because it would NOT work.

I think some have made that mistake of getting the micro II only to have it fry the chip.

A mini is a different animal all together.

I guess there is room for confusion with this but the "transflash" microSD is what to buy.
