  1. yep, had to get an "upgrade" code....Do use an UNLOCK on your same gps?? Also, I am now happy with my version 6 even though there were problems introduced that weren't in V5
  2. That's true of the Magellan Meridians also. Are there any waterproof GPSRs with expandable memory that don't hide the memory card inside of the gasketed battery compartment? I just reviewed the ifinder H2O and I see that it is rated for 12 hours on two AA batteries...the old ifinder I couldn't find a battery life advertised. AS far as the memory card....I'm trying to find where I saw the mem card was under the battery but I may have been confusing it with the meriplate.???? Sorry for any confusion..I'll post when I get the straight skinny.
  3. True enough. So the only question is the interface with say, easyGPS. One other BAD feature is that they eat batteries about twice what a 76C does. At least the older ifinder did....dont know about the newer model. I had a lowrance airmap100 and loved it for what it did and the way it worked... One other issue...the battery has to come out so that you can get at the memory card in the ifinder.
  4. On thing I haven't seen mentioned (and in my opinion the most important feature) is that the Aviation specific gps's give you proximity warnings to restricted airspaces. These can be irregular shapes and altitudes. I dont know of any nonaviation gps that does this for you...and if it did, how hard would it be to input all those restriced airspaces??? Of course, since 9/11 NOTAM's are a daily adventure.
  5. Thanks for your efforts...all the roads are still there but as soon as you move into the base the roads no longer PIN (the big circle comes on). Also, upcoming streets are not announced (like they were in version 4). Apparently, theyve eliminated some important routeing information for the base. The base is IN the map segment I loaded..it just is missing autorouting features that cause the problems. Thanks everyone commenting...based on what everyone has said, I'll load in version 6 on trips and keep version 4 loaded for around home. I finally took the inititive and reported the 6 or 7 errors that have nagged at me from version 4 that still exsisted in verion 6. Only one item was fixed in my area...the bridge across the white river on SR157 west of worthington now correctly crosses straight acrosss (on the new bridge that was built in the 40's LOL). Version 4 still had the old bridge from the 40's that jogged left and right at the river.
  6. OK you guys...I cant believe I'm the only one to have a gripe with the upgrades. Well then....everyone who is delighted with the upgrade please chime in. I'm looking for a reason to NOT make a stink about this...a group of folks telling me that "lots of POI's have been added" or "The exits going through StLouis are accurate now" or anything like that...might make me feel better about having spent $75 on, what so far looks to me, to be a downgrade.
  7. In my reading so far it seems everyone has been pretty happy with their upgrade to verion 6 city select. For me and my area, it was a major downgrade. I wonder if POI's and highway information has improved greatly??? I need a reason to keep this "upgrade" and from what I've seen so far there is none. Has anyone else been dissatisfied with version 6? If anyone could check for me that this is truly the case and I'm not doing something wrong: Please load in the military navy base at Crane, Indiana south of bloomfield. The roads on the military base I work on no longer "pin" and have lost their turn by turn navigation information. I bike ride on base and I like the upcoming road info popping up on the screen as I approach. This is gone now but worked well in verison 4. The end of the road I live on (cherry ave in worthington, IN) is properly shown to connect to CR700 in version 4 of city select. Not in version 6 so now autorouting will never choose that way to go. In my town of worthington indiana, in version 4.0 of city select the map shows the park in town (which has a circle road within the park). Version 6 deleted this road. I just talked to a guy who lives in my area who said he was dissatisfied with his upgrade from v4 to version 5 as well.
  8. Yep, In my town of worthington indiana, in version 4.0 of city select the map shows the park in town (which has a circle road within the park). Version 6 deleted this road. Also, in my town (worthington, IN) cherry avenue (northeast of town) connects to the gravel road (CR700) that goes out of town to the west. this is show corectly in 4.0 but version 6 has them disconnected. Check out this view from mapquest...this compares with version 4 but not 6. worthington mapquest I had routing information "checked" on the upload (if I didn't then no routing would work). They have disabled functionality that was in version 4.0. I just talked to a guy who lives in my area who said he was dissatisfied with his upgrade from v4 to version 5 as well. Most everyone on here seems happy with their upgrade....is anyone dissatisfied like I am???
  9. The question is, are you sure you want to??? I did the upgrade and aside from one fix, it appears they have deleted lots of minor roads in my area. The kicker for me. I work on a navy base in southern Indiana (Crane, IN) and all the roads used to be "routeable". I ride my bike here on base and this was great to have to know what roads were coming up and such. Well, version 6 demoted the base roads to unrouteable trails apperantly. Can anyone verify this or maybe I'm doing something wrong. I'm very dissatisfied with the upgrade at this point. Am I the only one who is???
  10. OK, I got my update CD and am trying to install it. (I"m updating from v4 city select to version 6) I have gone through the motions of installation and the last step is to either 1) put in an 8 digit code for unlocking the maps. 2) Add a second unit 3) unlock more maps. I dont want to add a second unit, I dont have an 8 digit unlock code but I do want to unlock more maps when I choosed this option it tells me that I dont have any products to unlock (I assume its because I've already unlocked all regions for my GPSV when I instaled verions 4 CS). So what do to now..I dont want to make the same mistake the other guy did and unlock the same unit twice and use it up so when I buy my 76CS I'll have to buy verions 6 maps again....What do I do now, besides call Garmin??????
  11. OK, so the thing to remember is "dont unlock the same unit twice" you use the new code given to you for 6 (which is not an unlock code but an update code).' I still think that the loading software should be smart enough to not allow you to waste an second unlock on the same gps unit. I can see me making the same mistake as "wornout"
  12. OK, so my version 4 still has an unlock left on it... somehow, version 6 will know that my gps V already has 4 installed on it and it will update. I still will be able to load version 4 and then 6 onto a new 76cs when/if I get one. Thats fair enough if it works that way. Todd
  13. I agree, you got ripped for one unlock of version 6. If they had sent you version 6 to begin with (like they said) then you would still have one good unlock left to be used on aother gps if you got one. Now you have no unlocks left. so now I have a question....If I have no Unlocks left for my version 4 and I get the upgrade to version 6, how many unlocks will I get??? Thanks for the info..now I know I need to find this out before I upgrade.
  14. Hey JV, we get it...you dont want a color screen for geocaching. Thats OK with me. So if I want a color screen to geocach with (or anything else)..just shut up and sell me one (you are going to be selling these things right?). There's room here for the colored and he monochrome. We CAN live in peace, side by side....
  15. Yes, my friend who has the platinum just told me the other day that he didnt' use his topo maps as much as he though he would. He's a hunter and I think uploades his data to oziexplorer. The platinum was a strong contender to the gps V I fiannlly got. If not for autorouting I probably would have gone for the cheaper price and better memory.
  16. Actually, it does make sense. But since you can't do it on your MeriGold you wouldn't know. Here is an actual example. When I head to southern Utah for geocaching, there are many caches near forest service/ATV roads. These roads aren't on the basemap (obviously) and aren't on MS City Select. But they are on the MS Topo maps. So, instead of having my nose buried in a paper map figuring out when to take which forest service/ATV road, the 60CS tells me. That is safer AND more convenient...and IT IS AUTOROUTING! You'd have to be colorblind to say that color doesn't, in many cases, make finding caches easier. To reiterate what others have said, a color screen shows items such as parks, waterways, trails, roads, etc. much more clearly (to me). There is obviously no changing your mind...which is fine. But I take that you aren't reading these forums on a monochrome monitor. Oh wait...color is great for EVERYTHING but geocaching. Now I get it. Sindigo OK, color doesn't help you find a cache any easier but it will help with roads and other complex mapping. GPS maps are so small that anything you can do to make a map more "readable" is an advantage I would like to go on record as "likeing" Color screens for the way I use a GPS and I would pay a premium for it. I think "most" on here probably agree that color is a desirable feature and that they would like their next gps to have it.
  17. That's the best thing about Directroute. All, but basic, Sport traks and Meridians Auto route. Is this "turn by turn" autorouting like in the gps V? Tell me more about it.....My GPS V pops up and give me highway exit information, exiting left or right in 1/2 mile..that sort of thing. Does it work this way on the meridians? I didn't think it did or could but if I'm wrong then it opens my selection for my NEXT GPS.
  18. Disregarding autorouting, one might consider the lowrance airmap 500 (ifinder based). These come with all sorts of accesories including external antenna. also, you get to know when you enter different airspaces while your driving around...LOL Actaully, as a frequenct flyer, the information in the airmap is interesting while in flight..you can understand sometimes why you just made a turn south (when the Gps says you just passed over a nav marker)..
  19. The meridians dont autoroute do they?? Just so we are comparing apples to apples. I think someone said that you can load routes that were created from the PC but I dont think thats the same functionality as what the V or the 60CS can do. Disregarding autorouting, my choice of GPS would be much more difficult.
  20. Hey, lets hear your comparison of the two displays...the lowrance (low res ifinder) to the GPS V. Have you ever wished you had bought the ifinder pro?
  21. I have seen my V give different route choice than the computer. also, since the computer always has all the map segments, if you try to upload a computer route and the gps doesn't have all the map sections it wont work as expected..in fact, it tells you that your route is no good since all map segments are not available. Also, my V has chosen super poor routes before. dont just blindly follow your gps or you may spend hours extra on the road.
  22. As someone with a GPS V (with 19MB of memory) I currently deal with what you describe below. About twice a year I travel between northern NJ and southern NC, a distance of 635 miles. I have no choice but to use the built-in basemap of the GPS. This is my pet peeve with the V. The basemap is pretty worthless for autorouting if you want "turn left, turn right" type of directions. If you cant get every major city into your route then you you are back to paper maps between point A and point B. For me, I would like to have the capability to have my "ENTIRE" route in the GPS and also have TOPO maps in there for Non driving use. Give me the extra memory of the 76CS. Or better yet, give me a removable CF card!!!
  23. Yup, mine does that too....I think the basemap isn't as accurate at the city select...also, autorouting sucks using the base map. The highway exit/entrance ramps are no good. Not worth the time to try and autoroute without city select. Thats my biggerst peeve with the V is the lack of memory..cant route from indiana to florida very well....you need all major cities in your route and the V just dont get it. I'm wanting a 76CS for my next unit.
  24. Hey, I was checking out the ifinder and now see that it includes a waterproof version. Also, the pro model and waterproof model have a bigger and higher resolution screen. Which one did you get?
  25. Hey dude, looks like your SOL getting lowrance info from this predominantly Garmin group. Probably becuase garmin has the market sewn up....I love my GPSV but I loved my lowrance first.. Guess I'll have to go buy an ifinder (heck, their only 135 bucks right?). Then at least the two of us can answer each others questions...hahaha
