  1. I have ver. 6.11.5.0 of MapSource and I see Save As only with .gdb, .mps and .txt - no .gpx
  2. My MapSource (ver. 6) only offers "Save As" to "All Files" or to "Garmin .gdb files". There is no ".gpx" option.
  3. Thanks RobertLipe and PDOPS. I'm using a Garmin eTrex Venture and an eTrex Vista C. I have MapSource - I'll browse through the material to see if I can figure out how to convert directly to a .gpx from there. Otherwise I'm using either Win 2K or XP depending on the computer at the time. I'll check out gpsbabel and gpstrackmaker in addition to the MapSource.
  4. I want to utilize a set of tracks from my Garmin etrex to visualize in some mapping program (Google Earth?). I understand that I have to convert the Garmin data to a .gpx file. What program do I best use to do that? Thanks.
  5. I figured it out. When you generate your Directions (Start - End) in Google Earth you must right click on the title of the direction list; not the first entry, which is what I did. The .kml file that I obtained was only the first waypoint of the route and therefore not a route, so the Geocaching site correctly did not see it as a route. The Geocaching.com instructions could be a bit more clear on this.
  6. I'm trying to set up a series of caches along a route. I got the Google .kml to my desktop but when I go to geocaching.com > caches along a route > browse > open > upload, I get no listing of a route in the box below and I get a red letter warning that "routes have not been saved". How do I "save" the routes? Somehow I'm not getting the data file from my desktop to load in the geocaching site. I'm stuck; I can find no explanation in the forums about this. Thanks for any solution to a probably stupid thing I'm doing/not doing.
  7. Hynr; I reran a similar Google route to the PQ that I had a problem with last week and this time I got the same # of caches as are in the Preview. Thanks for fixing the problem.
  8. Thanks for the comments Markwell but I see no evidence that the programmers have noted the problem that many of us just verified, ie. a "truncation of PQs" and the thread seems to just dissipate into a discussion of GSAK and where PQs end up. My problem was related to "Google Earth caches along a route" where I had 55 caches in the preview and only 6 in the emailed file from Geocaching.com. The feature is potentially extremely useful so I hope this gets acknowledged and fixed.
  9. I set up a Google Earth route and made it into a Along a Route pocket query. When I previewed it there were 55 caches within it, however when I received it by Email it was only 10K in size and when I opened it there were only 6 caches. I went back to preview it on the My Account page in Geocaching.com and it still contains the 55 caches. Somehow the file is getting modified from the Pocket Query setup page to my Email delivery. Any ideas? Also is there a way to download the cache descriptions directly from the Preview page? I need to have not only the WPs but the cache info to put into my Visor PDA. When I check off various caches and then hit Download the default window is a .loc file which I don't think passes on cache descriptions. If I could just get them all off the Preview page I wouldn't need to have a Pocket Query mailed to me. Thanks.
  10. Got it; I had to open a Location > Search option in order for those 3 tabs to appear. Thanks Ambrosia
  11. I tried a search for this but the results are too numerous and non specific to review. I'm trying Google Earth for the first time, trying to establish a Route for caches. The Geocaching.com instructions say to "click on the Directions tab in the upper left corner of the page" on Google Earth. There is no such tab on my screen, nothing anywhere, even in the menus, about Directions. So I tried to pin my starting and ending points, then used the pin locations as Start and End for Directions. I thought that might form a route but when I exported the KML then browsed and uploaded it to Geocaching.com I got a red note saying the "routes have not been saved". There is also no Preview option, as suggested. Help! Thanks.
  12. Fascinating info only loosely related to geocaching from some obvious experts. Thanks.
  13. As described in a previous post I tried to drag and drop a GPX file into Google Earth on my DT; nothing happened. Can someone please explain how to do this and what else one can do with GE? Thanks.
  14. I just got MS S&T 2005 and have started to investigate it but when I decided to import some WPs from my Garmin GPSr to S&T I couldn't find any mechanism to accomplish this. The program recognizes the unit but I'm inside with the satellite search turned off and want only to view some caches that I found today on the S&T map. This should be simple but I can't see it. Thanks.

    Pocket Queries

My issue is that the PQs that I set up get erased (not by me) from the My Pocket Queries page. For example I ran one yesterday to use this weekend and it is already gone, yet, out of the many I've previously run there is one that is still there (why?). If I could choose to have some NOT be removed I could run the preview searches when I wanted at a later date then erase them myself when they are no longer useful.

    Pocket Queries

Thanks Prime Suspect but I'm not sure that's the entire answer since I have an old PQ that persists on the page but doesn't continue to run weekly. Anyway, it would be useful to be able to retain the Query in order to quickly run the search without having the PQ be actually delivered each week.

    Pocket Queries

I've noticed that some of my Pocket Queries get saved on the request page while others disappear after they've run. Is there a way to ensure that they stay so I can return to them to run the search?
  18. I'm for a rating system! I'd like to suggest the the ratings have 2 catagories; one for "cleverness" of hide for those interested in the challenges of the search, and another for geographical interest (for those travelers like me who use Geocaching to discover neat spots in a new area). Not all caches need to be rated; only those deemed exemplary.
  19. Does anyone have any info or opinions re: this mapping software for PPCs? Judging from the web site it looks great with thousands of maps and costs only $20. As a side, I did a forum search for it and was returned with some replies, none of which I could see had anything to do with this product. Why would that be? Thanks in advance.
  20. Does anyone have any experience with the PPC product by Maptech called Outdoor Navigator? It appears top notch with thousands of maps available according to the web site and costs only $20. As a side, I did a forum search for this product and got some responses, none of which seemed to have any thing related to this software. Why is that? Thanks in advance.
  21. I am starting to learn how to use Plucker. I know it is designed to extract web page content for viewing on a Palm PDA. I successfully uploaded some cache pages with GPXSpinner to Plucker but I noticed that the pinned map from the cache page is absent. Is there a way to have it appear also? Thanks.
  22. I've managed to get a URL as a destination in Sunrise Desktop then got it converted into a .pdb file on my desktop but when I try to HotSync it it doesn't show up on my PDA (either in Plucker or elswhere). I notice that I'm supposed to install a "Sunrise.prc" stub program on my PDA so the Sunrise DT and PDA Plucker will recognize each other but I can't find that program anywhere in the Program Files/Sunrise folder. I have a feeling that is what I lack but where did it go? Thanks.
  23. I'm thinking about utilizing mapping software in the field to look for caches. I know there are excellent mapping programs for loading into PDAs (I use Palm) and ones loaded into certain GPSrs. In general, what are the advantages and disadvantages of either approach assuming I can connect the PDA to the GPSr? Thanks for your comments.
