  1. Hi: I am thinking about throwing in the towel and selling my Magellan Meridian Platinum and the accessories and software. I will post it in the For Sale forum here. I just can't not seem to "get" all the things that I want to do with it. For example, I still haven't figured out how to download waypoints from MapSend to the GPSr. I still haven't figured out how to use EasyGPS. The list goes on but I do have some dignity left and don't wish to publicly humiliate myself. hahahahahahahahahahahaha So, do you think asking $250 would be a fair aslomg price for; * Magellan Meridian Platinum - v4.02 firmware update. (V4.06 on a CD as well) * Magellan PC Data Cable – SporTrak/Meridian * Magellan Meridian Vehicle Mounting Bracket * Magellan Power Cable w/Cigarette Lighter Adapter SporTrak/Meridian * 64MB Secure Digital Memory Card * MapSend Streets and Destinations U.S.A. V4.o0F * Duracell Rechargeable AA Batteries (4) with One Hour charger NiMH/1.2V/1800mAh I don't want to sell each item individually. I thought I'd offer all items here before heading to eBay. Thanks, Skippy2
  2. I went to http://www.quakemap.com and saw that the program requires .NET Framework Windows component. Naturally, it was not on my computer and I didn't download it the required .NET thing. The reason is, that I just moved to Windows XP and I am so completely in over my head with the whole thing. Plus, I read the other day that the Microsoft udate/fix for Win XP caused everything to slow waaaaaaaaaaaay down. I don't need this hassle. I am rapidly losing my enthusiasm for geocaching. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. because in order to do it correctly, I have to have so many programs and program software requirements installed on my computer, as well as on my GPSr that I have fallen behind in the learning curve. This might be an advantage though, for someone just getting into the game. If I am unable to solve all of these GPSr problems as they come up, I may just put the MeriPlat on the Garage Sale forum here. Maybe I'm just at the bottom of my biorhythms and things will be better next week. <very large grin> Sigh. REgards, Skippy2
  3. I hate to be a constant questioner here, but with each "whine" I learn something more. You folks have been very gracious about answering my questions in the past and I thank you for that. My question today is this. (after a brief setup) 1. I have a Magellan Platinum (firmware v4.02)64MB SD card. 2. I have MapSend Streets and Destinations USA (v4.00f) 3. I know how to select a region from Streets and Destinations and upload it to the SD card in the MeriPlat. 4. HERE'S THE QUESTION: Can I upload the waypoints I created in region that I created in Streets and Destinations and transfer/upload them into the Plat as well? I want to to use this method as a "poor man's" auto-routing. I think I've seen questions and answers about this, on this forum, but doing a search produces several hundred hits without the exact question and answer. Just think, someday I'll have all the answers and won't be bothering anyone here anymore. hahahahahahahahahahahahaha. btw, I have RTFM (MapSend CD) and I couldn't find the answer. Thanks, Skippy2
  4. I see Leica is marketing a GPSr. Does anyone have any experience with this unit? Thanks, Skippy2
  5. That did it! Score another one for the people of the world who help other people. Thank you. Skippy
  6. I posted my recent experience here, regarding my attempts to downgrade the firmware on my MeriPlat from 4.06 to 4.02 - and the tangle of problems I encountered, not the least of which was that I could not get the Plat to power back on. I finally got that particular problem solved (power) and took the little beauty out for testing. The "tracking" dots are much closer to the road now then they were in v4.06 and the corner tracks are much better then they were. The installation documentation says that one of the improvements in 4.02 was: "Added a feature to draw a second line from current position to destination after an "GOTO" or "route" is activated." Nope, no second line from current position to destination after a "GOTO" or "route" is activated. Sheesh, it never ends, does it? I see people using v4.03 in their Meriplats. I wonder if I should try that. Groan. Skippy2
  7. Many, many thanks for the replies - I really apprciate them. I will follow each instruction, as best I can. Thanks again for the help. Skippy2
  8. I have posted here before about my feelings regarding the firmware update v4.06 for the MeriPlat. I also said that that I was going to return to v4.02. I previouslhad very good luck with v4.02 when I had a MeriGreen. I followed the v4.02 download instructions to the letter. 1. Ok. 2. OK 3. OK 4. OK 5. OK 6. OK 7. OK 8. At this point, the words "upload of of code complete" (as the instructions said they would appear.) The unit turned itself off - BUT the unit did not automatically restart as the the instructions said it would. I unhooked the PC Power/Data cable and tried to start the unit by hitting the Power button. The normal first screen appeared for 1/1000th of a second and was replaced by a scree that says; UNIT CURRENTLY CONTAINS NO MAP! INITIATIMG MAP UPLOAD and...the message just stays there. I can NOT turn the unit off. I have to remove the batteries to get it to turn off. So much for the firmware upgrade. Any ideas what I should do now? Thanks! Skippy2

  10. Hi: I have installed, uninstalled and re-installed Magellan firmware 4.06 on my MeriPlat three times and is just NOT working. The arrow and "tracks" are waaaaaaaaaaaaay off on the map and the second black line" is missing on a "GO TO". I can create a waypoint in front of my house, knowing exactly where it is, and the Plat not find it. It keeps telling me it is 46 feet in another direction. My Magellean GPS (Green) would hit the spot within 2 feet every time. It had the double black line when using "GO To". The Merigreen had firmware v4.02 installed So, will I blow myself up if I install v4.02 on the Plat? I wouldn not think so, but you never can tell these days. Thanks, Skippy2
  11. quote:Originally posted by Cracker7M: Butthen again, you could just try reinstalling 4.06. Good suggestion. I did just that (reinstall) and will take it out tomorrow and see if performs more to standard. TY, Skippy2
  12. If the opposite of "update" is "downdate", then that's what I want to do. I updated the firmware in my MeriPlat to 4.06. I really think it messed things up. Can I go back and downdate it to 4.02 or 4.03? (Without causing irreparable harm, I mean.) Thanks, Skippy2
  13. I guess I'm not handicapped in the true sense of the word. But........... I'm 66 and have a set of knees that have rendered me pretty much not able to get around real well. (A 20 yard walk on level ground just knocks the knees out from underneath me and am forced to sit down and recover.) I just can't see paying $20,000 for knee replacement. I can use the twenty grand in other ways. hahahahahahahahahaha I am new to geocaching so I don't have a lot of experience but so far I've tried to find caches that are described as being _real easy_ and they are not real easy. (Climbing over a downed tree limb is impossible) When I was hale and hearty and in my 40's I sure didn't look at the terrain in the way that I do now. But, I'm going to continue with this wonderful world of geocaching to the limit of my abilities. Skippy2
  14. Problems. Always problems. I went to your site to download the new version of QuakeMap and was advised I needed Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1 to run it - So I charged off in search of it. I guess I don't know what I'm looking for because when I went to the Microsoft site (hot-linked on your page) I found myself wallowing around in all sorts of patches, updates etc for Microsoft Internet Explorer. After dilligent search, I did fin one link that actually had the words "Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1" but it turned out to be a SDK (Software Developers Kit?????) package. That isn't what I want, is it? I'm just an end user not a software developer or programmer. So, where might I obtain/download the .NET Framework file that you refer to on your page? Thank you. Skippy2
  15. quote: . . . I hope this helps others that are having this same problem. Thank you very much. I was having that problem and this really helped me. I like Netscape and was frustrated that it wouldn't work with EasyGPS. Skippy2
  16. I have been at this GPSr business for about a month. The learning curve is sort of flat, I guess, for most people, but I have found that I get hung up on the simple things. For instance, the coordinates. Lat/Long, degrees, minutes, seconds, etc. etc. Below is part of a post in the geocaching.com "GPS Units and Software": "...Make a waypoint at 55° 44.975N 037° 42.025E and you'll be almost right on top of it..." Okay, my question is, what format is that in? Thanks, Skippy2

Try http://mentorsoftwareinc.com/freebie/FREE1198.HTM for a slick little converter utility. BTW, I didn't go to the coordinates you gave so I don't know if they are correct or not. All I am offering is the converter utility. Regards, Skippy2

I tried starting at geocache.com, but after going through all of the links, did not find that one. (I don't know why.) Thank you very much. Skippy2
  19. Somewhere at this site, (geocaching.com - page or forum) I found a link to a site what posted lst/long of U.S. benchmarks, by state. I downloaded a bunch, thought I bookmarked the site and went about my way. I was looking for the site today and apparently I did not bookmark it. Anyone have any idea of where this page might be? Thanks,
  20. I have MapSend Topo - USA (v4.20D). It works fine, but shouldn't have purhased it because it doesn't have what I need. I need what MapSend Cities & Destinations has. But - while looking through eBay, I notice that all of the MapSend Cities & Destinations for sale, they all show pictures of the CD that states it is for "MAP 330 handheld receivers." This works on the Mageallan Meridians as well, does it not? ( IhopeIhopeIhopeIhope) Thanks.
  21. quote:Originally posted by sledgehampster:Topo and S&D are the same maps, the only differences have already been stated. Quite of the data is old or just incorrect. Quite a few of the restaurants and such in my area are gone, moved or just is the wrong place. My Topo (V4.20D) does _not_ have one restaurant/cafe/fast food etc. OTOH it lists arches, areas, basins, beaches, benches, bridges, campgrounds, capes, cliffs, falls, flats, forests, gaps, glaciers, guts, locales, mines, oilfields, pillars, ranges, ridges, slopes, springs, summit, swamps, tunnels, valleys and wells but no hotels, restaurants. You know the things that I bought the map thinking I would get. Outside of sending my Meridian GPS (green) to you for confirmation that what I've said is true, you're just going to have to take my word for it. <big smile>
  22. quote:Originally posted by HOGHUNTERS:even trade, copy for copy, I need the street level data more than the topo for on the road. spent a ton on their unit and software so I don't feel bad about swapping a "data" cd for another.... That's exactly my problem. I bought the MapSend Topo when what I really should have purchased was Mapsend Streets and Destination USA. Topo if very good, but I don't really want to know where all the arches and waterfalls are. I need to know where the restaurants, etc. are. So I just wondered out-loud here, if trading software was allowed or a no-no. Thanks.
  23. I suppose trading software (MapSend) is out of the question, right?
  24. Yep! those who responded that Netscape 7.XX was the culprit, were correct. For those who responded that I should be able to open EasyGPS from within Netscape 7.XX ---- AAAAAAAAAAAAA (sound of TV game show buzzer) - Wrong. Sorry. BUT -- It works just fine with Netscape 4.76 Netscape 7.02 adds an ".asp" extension after ".loc" and EasyGPS responds that it can not open such files. What I have to do (as otheres here pointed out) is Save The File to Disk, knock off the ".asp" extension then copy the ".loc" file to EasyGPS Sample Directory. Many thanks for all of the replies anyway. At least I know now that I am not alone with the problem. Skippy2 [This message was edited by Skippy2 on May 15, 2003 at 06:41 AM.]
  25. From: http://www.geocaching.com/waypoints/help.asp "When you are logged in, a dialog box will come up asking you to open the file or save it. Choose open. There may be several dialog boxes asking you whether to save or open the file. Keep choosing open and as long as you have run EasyGPS for Groundspeak before, it should open up the coordinates in EasyGPS." When I choose "Open" my browser (Netscape) asks me to select an application to open the file. Yes, I have installed and run EasyGPS "before" and it DOES NOT "open up the coordiantes in EasyGPS." Thanks,
