  1. I'm from Yorkshire, I was hoping for the same number of bags from a poundshop (or, better yet, a 99p store!) I might check our poundshop tomorrow. Though the Lake District here in Cumbria often charge tourist prices
  2. You can find the map versions by going to Setup > Map > Map Information Select Map > choose whichever map out of your list of maps Then the i button at the bottom. For the firmware version. Go to Setup again and scroll to the bottom to the About menu item. That gives you the version of the software. Everyone advised me against the T version as there are better OSM maps available. However, being in the UK I got a very good deal on the 650 complete with 50K GB Discoverer map on SD along with a Birdseye Select voucher for 25K maps where I need them. I also got a years subscription to Birdseye Satellite Imagery. Didn't like that at all, but thats another story.
  3. I saw some cheap ziploc bags on eBay. 3" x 3.25" for £1.90 per 100 post free. just search ziploc bags and the chap has quite a few postings.
  4. Yes it is more accurate. But you cannot guarantee a 100% signal so that could be a problem. I am sure here in the UK that if your in built speedometer was defective you would be driving illegally, GPS or not.
  5. Nice one. I see they have incorporated the lack of compass with no sat fix problem that I commented on last week. Fast work. Is there an area on Garmins website that you can monitor for new beta's?
  6. Ok, great....If you do a comparison on REI website with the Oregon 450 and Montana 650 it reads Oregon windows/Mac compatible and the Montana only Windows compatible. I understood that to mean that the Montana was only windows compatible. That solve a potential problem for me. I am looking forward to doing a parking lot demo with the montana. I like the larger screen and better anti glare in sunlight, since I also use my GPS while kayaking. Must be a misprint. Basecamp is mac compatible, The only Montana/mac issue I have had is with beta updates which are issued as a .exe file. But with help on this forum there was a very good work around.
  7. I am not sure what you mean when you say the Montana is not supported by the Mac. I am mac based and haven't had a problem so far. Basecamp is working on my Mac Pro, Macbook Pro and Mac Air.
  8. I want a wife who doesn't nag, loves when I go hunting, and brings me beers from the fridge on a nod. Oh, and she also has to look like Angelina Jolie and be filthy rich. And a flat head to rest your beer on?
  9. I've had a Montana 650 for nearly three weeks now and also have a 60CSx. The Montana is fantastically customisable and the geocaching profile is brilliant. It is not a Nuvi modified for other uses. It's a very versatile GPSr on its own with Nuvi mode thrown in. I haven't owned an Oregon so can't really compare. But looking at the Oregon handbook, it looks like the Montana geocaching profile is based on the Oregon version but with more flexibility and space built into it. Beta upgrades are coming out frequently with very useful upgrades. For example in the last few weeks the Garmin dev team have added multiple customisable pages to the trip computer page which adds a who new dimension to versatility. That was from customer requests. I don't find the size objectionable at all. It's a price I am willing to pay for a good size clear screen.
  10. I am sure when I installed the 3.64 beta I noticed an aviation profile. I just looked and it's not there, I don't think I was dreaming. I don't know if there is a limit to the profiles that can be created but I have added two. Does anyone know of a way to delete a profile thats been added by mistake. EDIT.. I found how to delete a profile. Or rather found you can't delete a profile if its the active one.
  11. If your iPad is registered to the same iTunes account as the iPhone then you should definitely be able to download it onto the iPad or any other OS5 device thats registered to that account. Try downloading a very cheap app on the iPhone and test if that will download to the iPad.
  12. The SD cards shouldn't need unlocking. SD cards are protected in their own right.
  13. I had downloaded the 62 hand book from the Garmin site and noticed,Ike the 60 it has an elevation field. But so has the downloaded handbook for the Montana. In the Montana they added a GPS elevation field also. I was hoping the same might have happened to the 62 as well. I must admit, I didn't know the Sat page on the 60CSx had Sat elevation until recently. Aviation Is another interest and I like to track a journey. Was always a pain not being able to show height on the 60CSx. In a way I wish I had got the barometerless one also though would miss the compass.
  14. I have a 60CSx which I will probably pass on to my son as I bought a Montana 650 recently. I will miss the portability of the 60CSx compared to the much larger Montana. For that reason I am thinking of supplementing with a 62S. One thing that annoyed me on the 60CSx was that there was no data field for GPS elevation, only barometric. The Montana has added a GPS elevation field recently during an update. Have they done the same with the 62S or is it still without GPS elevation field. It doesn't show in the downloaded 62S handbook. But it didn't in the Montana one either.
  15. I am totally opposite and do not hesitate to take advantages of beta releases. The only exception being when I know the company concerned releases beta software which could really be classed as pre-alpha! This is very rare among large reputable companies similar to Garmin. Some software never comes out of beta as it is in constant development. But that doesn't mean it is released as unstable. I have been involved in official testing of both hardware and software for over 20 years in both beta and alpha phases of development and never had the sort of problems you seem to have had with your Oregon. Although I have only had my Montana for a few weeks, I have had two beta updates which have done nothing but enhance its operation. But beta software is usually supplied with a disclaimer which is really just a way to cover themselves legally. In my opinion your more at risk with first official releases of software than followup versions which is effectively what these beta releases are. If an item is sent away for repair to another country form here in the UK and the repair is free of charge, then we are not charged any import duty. I suspect most countries work in a similar way. Just a quick quote from our HMRC guide. No duty and VAT will be payable if the goods have been repaired free of charge and you can provide a copy of the guarantee/warranty agreement to your shipping provider for presentation to customs. If you have to pay for the repair, duty and VAT will be charged on the repair costs only If the goods have been replaced free of charge under guarantee or warranty, no duty is payable if the goods have been replaced free of charge under guarantee or warranty However there is a bit of an exception. If the unit is replaced for a new one which is unlikely for a software lockup, then here in the UK we would have to pay VAT on the value of the replacement item, not import duty. For us that would be at a 20% rate. I believe the equivalent in Japan is 5%. I would be very interested to know what serious issues you had with all the beta updates that you made with your Oregon.
  16. I agree. It just seemed odd. I don't get sat coverage in the house which is where I came across the issue. At first I thought it was interference, but the 60CSx worked fine. Like you say, I don't think its a problem I just found it strange as the magnetic compass is totally independent of the GPS as far as I am aware.
  17. Mine has been perfectly stable. Only issue which may not be due to the beta concerns the compass as I posted here http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=285998
  18. Hmm. Might be the beta. I have emailed Garmin.
  19. The Montana compass doesn't seem to work if you have lost satellite signal. It displays the press to calibrate message and doing a calibration doesn't seem to make any difference. As soon as you receive a satellite signal again the compass works. My 60CSx behaves as I would expect with the magnetic compass working irrespective of the satellite signal. If anyone is running pre beta firmware and could test it out. I would be interested to know if this has crept in with a beta.
  20. It's such a specialised subject I doubt many have tried. Even the likes of Apple use custom modules in their phones. I don't know of you mean the electronics of the GPS receiver itself or the logic from thceiver. For the latter you could look at an Arduino kit. I have played around with them with a GPS module as an auto pilot for a model quadcopter. Could be worth a look here http://www.sparkfun.com/tutorials/127
  21. I would install it. But for me it has added features I was badly hoping and waiting for. In my view it's more stable than the last released update.
  22. I'll take that back. It has worked. Change to field layouts are now individual to the profile and not made global across the profiles. I had sent a request in to Garmin for this a couple of days ago. When I thought this latest beta hadn't implemented the change I emailed them again, about half an hour ago. They replied that the request had been implemented and after trying again, they are correct. I don't know why it didn't work the first time I tried. I am totally amazed at the response and support. They seem to be really on the ball.
  23. I was hoping that this meant that fields setup in a profile were individual to that profile and not global as it is at present. Doesn't seem to be the case though. So anyone any ideas what this means? It also seems there is a different email address for reporting problems now. It was oregon.beta@garmin.com. Note the new address MontanaBeta@garmin.com
  24. Thanks for that. I have only been a premium member for a week and am still getting to grips with PQ's. That sounds a very useful technique.
  25. I am not sure how you do this. I have only done PQ's from the selection page. Can you explain a bit further the bookmark bit etc. Thanks.
