  1. Hello, There are a few caches around the lake. Are you going to have transportation? Or just going to the baths? There is an earthcache at the nature baths: Myvatn Nature Baths If you have time, I would recommend some walking in Dimmuborgir (Dimmuborgir) and to the rim of Hverfjall (Hverfjall - Mývatn). The linked earthcaches will give you some information. Hverir (Hverir) is also an interesting spot. There are a few traditional caches in Akureyri but not many. 2. I have one of these: Printer 10 A little more pricey than some options, but not really by much when comparing to other options in Canada. It included the graphic design of my logo by professional graphic designers and geocachers. I don't use it on nanos or micros, but I will use it on anything with an actual logbook. I also still write more than just my name and the date in logbooks, so usually use up a whole page in a small logbook with text and my stamp. I don't have a signature item that I leave, so my stamp in the log is what I leave.
  3. Italy's been announced (yay, that's one for me!). Not in order so far, but still on the A-Team's list.
  4. I'm surprised there hasn't been any chatter about this: Blog Post Six isn't many, but it's a step in the right direction! The comments seem to indicate that there will be more in the future as well.
  5. I use an eTrex 30. I like that it's small, durable, and doesn't have a touchscreen (since 10 months of the year I'm wearing gloves or mittens!). It does everything I want it to do - loads geocaches from my computer, shows me descriptions, logs, and hints in the field, navigates, and I can add maps. The only thing I wish I could do was delete caches from in the field, but I've gotten used to that.
  6. That is why the list of time zones provided via the ASP.net framework has several time zone entries for each specific time offset. That way, you can select the option that best fits your area. That would work if there was some way to tell which time zone options observe DST and which don't. Is there a guide to these options somewhere that provides this information? Ah, my mistake. I was supposed to know that Arizona doesn't observe DST either to pick the correct one. Yes, a guide would be helpful.
  7. Other than the already discussed topic about "List Newest in [state]", I don't have strong opinions on most of the changes, except for one. Why take away the Daylight Savings Time choice? What about those people who happen to live in a city that doesn't observe it?
  8. There are a few of these near me. They all have holes (or one big one) drilled in the bottom that you have to cover. They are all attached to something up off the ground (tree, fence, etc.). They've all been in good shape. Obviously your container will need to be very very waterproof...
  9. Zanadians Adventure 3 stages, all of them awesome locations that took some effort: Stage 1 - on top of the highest local mountain, a full day hike. Stage 2 - inside an abandoned mine shaft. Final - Up a 4x4 backcountry road followed by a hike into a backcountry lake. The three locations were all a 2-3 hour drive from each other.
  10. I've discovered a few very cool spots and views courtesy of virtual caches. Here are just a couple: Wilcox Cap, the view: The Snail, in Venice (not a great picture of the whole tower): kunst in een boom in Amsterdam, a piece of art in a tree:
  11. Relaxing for lunch near the cache location after a recent FTF at a local sub-alpine lake.
  12. I was able to find a good number of excellent earthcaches during a trip to Iceland last year. The weather was often rather gloomy, which doesn't always make for the best photography, but here are some of the nice spots we visited. Landmannalaugar - Fjallabak Reserve: Latrabjarg : Hverfjall - Mývatn: HLJÓÐAKLETTAR (ICELAND): Eating huckleberries (which didn't appear to have been being picked by anyone else!) with Kirkjan in the background
  13. N 51° 28.021 W 117° 04.338 212 km from my home coords, roughly along the Trans Canada between Golden and Revelstoke. Very much not where I was expecting, but it does kind of make sense with the various places I've lived.
  14. I have to agree with Doug about the North Star Trail between Cranbrook and Kimberley...not only is it a wonderful paved multi-use trail (nothing motorized allowed) off the highway, but the caches are all unique and include mysteries, multis, and traditionals, hidden by a variety of cachers. It is not a typical power trail where every cache is the same. I have quite a few along there that are still stumping me!! Enjoy, wherever you go!
  15. I know that the treated clothing on the LL Bean and REI websites can't be shipped to Canada, so I'm going to go with "yes". Very annoying. On the other hand, our government's travel websites say: "Although permethrin is not available in Canada, travel health clinics can advise you how to purchase permethrin and pre-treated gear before or during your trip." Maybe I should ask them.
  16. On a beautiful spring evening, I told my partner we were going on a nice walk up a nearby butte, and there just happened to be some caches along the way. This was the view from the one at the top, as we shared our "summit" beverage.
  17. I spent a couple of weeks in Iceland last autumn and visited many ECs, and unfortunately missed many too! Some of my favourites were: GC31PK5 - Landmannalaugar - Fjallabak Reserve GC3W6RA - HLJÓÐAKLETTAR (ICELAND) GC4F8B5 - Kröflueldar - the black area around Krafla
  18. Yesterday another local cacher and I went for a 5 hour hike to find a cache. We were lucky and the cache location was protected enough that we didn't even have to dig. A beautiful, if a bit chilly, day.
  19. For me, it means that under normal winter conditions the cache will be above the snow or in a location that is still visible/accessible in the snow. That may be hung in a tree, in a root ball or stump that sticks up or at least creates an obvious hump in the snow, etc. It may mean at ground level in an area that is sheltered and doesn't see much accumulation. To me, if it's under a log that's buried by 4 feet of snow such that the ground profile is flat and I can't even tell there's a log there...it doesn't deserve the snowflake. I may go search for it anyway, but I would expect to be digging for it.
  20. 23 at one house, though I had to do a search by postal code since it wouldn't recognize my address, the address of the nearby post office, or the address of the town office. Apparently we don't exist. 129 at the other house, though I also had to search by postal code there. Neither of my addresses exist!!
  21. I've driven through Elko NV and Elko BC, and by my memory they're about equally exciting. Except of course that the one in Nevada has casinos...
  22. Hmm...my goal for 2013 was to find more than 365 caches, which I achieved. I think in 2014 I'll shoot for 500. I'm not much for power trails, so that means lots of hiking for me! I'd also like to add another country, province, or state, which would require travelling either east or south or both (or really far west!), and there aren't currently any plans to do that. I'm trying to fill in my calendar grid too, which other than the 2 missed days last week was going reasonably well. Gotta get through winter!! Still achievable in 2014 if I don't muck it up!
  23. No caches in the place I was playing last weekend. But I have found the 2 on Crowsnest Mtn, which is the mountain on the right.
