  1. Who is this Mike (a.k.a. owner / publisher of the former Geocacher Magazine)? Supposedly, this Mike took a lot of people's money and never got the magazine up and running. My brother had given me a subscription to Geocacher Mag last Christmas and this is what we come to find out. Is this guy still an active geocacher?
  2. There are several of us in the area that have released laminated cards depicting a picture and mission statement of owned geocoins. Typically, these are coins that I would not like to go missing but would still like to have out there logging miles. Some people have had negative comments on these not being the real coin. That being said I'm not willing to have a newbie take my coins (some prizes, some gifts, etc.) and keep /lose them. Your thoughts???
  3. I was a diehard Magellan user until I bought a Triton. I've been using a GPSr at work for nearly a decade until I started geocaching, so I'm pretty techno-savvy. That being said, it took me nearly a half hour just to figure out how to do a "Go To" with the Triton. It involved going through numerous main menus and subfolders. RIDICULOUS! A day after receiving my Triton, it was in a box being returned. I ended up getting a Garmin GPSMap 60Cx and five minutes out of the box I was running waypoints. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT GET A MAGELLAN TRITON!!! I'm not telling you to go out and get a Garmin (although I highly recommend them) but I would stay as far away from the Triton as possible. Good luck and HAPPY CACHING!!!

  5. Here's a good one for ya' Dutch! I was looking for one around Harrisburg, PA and found a fake electrical conduit. It was clearly obvious that this was the camouflage but there was no log in the container. It was just laying there on the ground at the coordinates. I emailed the CO (even with a picture) to confirm and they said that "yes" this was the container. Since I was getting close to a milestone and wanted my numbers to line up, I asked if I should log this as a find. They informed me that since I didn't find / sign the log, that technically it wasn't a find... I guess I should carry some loose paper with me next time. Maybe anal is an understatement for these folks...
  6. I'll admit the lure of true paperless is hard to resist. I just don't know if it is worth paying $600 for it...
  7. I absolutely love my Garmin GPSMap 60 Cx (for work and geocaching). The accuracy is great and I like the features it has. The only thing it is potentially lacking in is the geocache manager software (or lack thereof). I'm really considering getting a Garmin Oregon 400t but don't want to sacrifice any accuracy or features for a better geocache manager. Give me your thoughts...
  8. I purchased a Triton 500 when they were first "supposed to" appear on the market in 2008. After several backorders, I got the receiver. Up to this point, I had been using a Magellan receiver for almost a decade at work and with geocaching (mainly the eXplorist series). I decided to take the new receiver for its field trials on a friends cache that I had already done once on the past. It took me 10 minutes and five sub-menus just to do a goto. Absolutely ridiculous!!! You will keep hearing folks say that the firmware updates will make the Triton a superior piece of hardware. I don't know about you... but I have places to go and caches to find!!!! Needless to say, I am now the proud owner of a Garmin GPSMap 60Cx. I was out running waypoints and chasing caches after having the receiver out of the box for ten minutes (with no experience of Garmin software interface). Never again a Magellan... HAPPY CACHING!!!
  9. I started out using Magellan GPSr's at work over a decade ago and started out using them when I found geocaching. When I heard about the Triton, I jumped on it and purchased a 500. Now keep in mind, I am very Magellan interface savvy and have had a lot of experience with them (at work and caching). After a run-around with Magellan I finally received my unit. Took me a while to figure out how to just do a manual GOTO without a pre-loaded waypoint. I took the Triton on its field-trial on a friend's cache that I had already logged. Still wouldn't work without paging through numerous screens, pulldown menus, etc. RIDICULOUS!!!!! If this is your first receiver, DO NOT BUY A TRITON!!!!! If anything, get on eBay and find a used eXplorist or better yet, go all out and get a Garmin 60Cx. I bought mine after returning the Triton and 5 minutes out of the box (after no experience with Garmin), I was navigating. As a disclaimer, I could care less if someone uses Magellan or Garmin. I have had a lot of success and experience with both brands. Also, I have a good friend that has had good luck with his PN-20. My complaint is with the Triton.... Best of luck!
  10. My best all-time excuse was to a college student napping in front of the final of a very devious multi-. I explained to him that I was performing a structural integrity test on the area that he was in for my master's thesis. The guy was so nice about asking him to get up, he even asked if he could help! Good thing he didn't know foresters generally don't do buildings... The cache owner applauded my efforts to protect the integrity of the cache location 2nd all time favorite was a way to save a bit of walking. While caching with another local cacher at a cache noted for its LOOOONG hikes between stages, we happened upon a railway worker getting ready to go through an access gate. We knew the next stage was over a mile down the tracks so we hitched a ride. We did, in that case, explain what we were doing after the service he provided. I think we even got him interested in the hunt! Recently, I had a creepy muggle come up and ask me if I was looking for dead bodies. No response and quickly DNF'ed due to the warm cozy feeling he gave me...
  11. Alright folks, give me your thoughts on this one. I just deleted a "found" log because this forum reminded me of my intentions to do so. While night caching at a township park, there was another cache within walking distance of the final. Used the hints to find this additional cache. The hints were: No sand on this beech (OK, A BEECH TREE). and something about a hollow log. Bingo! Found a cache in a hollow log by a beech tree within 40' of the coords. Upon opening the cache, I read a different cache name. It was a letterbox! It was dark, I was tired and thought this was my intended target since there has been some sloppy cache maintenance in that area. I had no idea that there was a letterbox cache there not involved with geocaching.com. To make myself feel better, I deleted my log and wrote a note. I guess integrity is another thing some of the supposed cachers quoted in this forum lack. I'll pat myself on the back later... Teeth to the wind!
  12. Ok folks, here's the deal. I grew up fishing Chester Creek when I lived in Delaware County. I know where the cache is, how the property boundaries are in the area and have watched this kid's video for the cache. Although somewhat amusing, it goes against everything I thought cachers are supposed to hold sacred. Leave no trace!!!!!!!! Regarding the area itself. It is very easy to throw on the ol' hip waders, enter at a public park, walk down stream and cross towards the cache. Sorry for the spoiler but I haven't even logged this one yet. Been doing my background work before attempting. I think it is great that a person of his age is interested in the outdoors and the adventures it can hold. But as like most of today's youth, they need to learn respect. It really upset me watching these two "adventurers" in the video curse, chop away with the machete and trespass on private property. What is it going to take before this guy gets seriously hurt, arrested or gets someone killed? Hopefully that isn't too disjointed...
  13. New Magellan Triton 500 for sale. USB cable and software included. More information on eBay or contact me at danlowy@gmail.com
  14. Here's a quickie on Dell. They advertised in November '07 that they would have Triton 500's available for delivery by the end of November for $237. Naturally, I was excited about the thought of having a Triton by year's end and got hooked in. The first delay brought us to the first week of December (knocked $20 off after an hour long complaint session). Second delay in my order shot me to the second week, then third and finally an estimated shipping date of Jan 31, 2008. Got sick of that and found a small story in Florida that had two 500's in stock. Cancelled my Dell order. Got to speak to most of the inhabitants of Bangladesh. Charming people... At that point, I wasn't sure whom I was more upset with Dell vs. Magellan. Magellan obviously gave Dell permission to advertise for the Triton and promised them so many units before such a date. Never dealing with Dell again and most likely the same with Magellan...
  15. Once again I agree. This whole problem started for me back in November when I saw DELL advertising the Triton for less than anyone else at the time. Unfortunately, at the time I was unaware of Magellan's actual release date. I have spent more time speaking with outsourced customer service reps. from DELL and Magellan over these last couple months then I would ever like to in a lifetime. I have my own issues with DELL because of this but that's a story for a different day... This has really hit me hard. Didn't ever expect to have anything other than a Magellan in my hand and NEVER thought I would have a Garmin in my pack. It is a shame.
  16. Note the "will be using NG TOPO" in this reply. I tried loading a NG map onto the Triton 500. This involved an update for the TOPO software just to recognize the Triton. Started loading and then the Triton completely froze up (I waited for over an hour). Maybe the Triton will someday be an amazing receiver but I have places to go and things to do in the meantime. Granted it is nice to have a GPSr for geocaching, hiking and enjoyment but my primary focus for a new receiver is for my business. The Triton let me down on all accounts. As noted before, I have always had a Magellan in the woods with me until now. I have always preferred the interface that Magellan has offered with its receivers. If Magellan would have just worked out some of the minor bugs, I probably would have waited. Perfect example: Doing a GOTO on the background map of an eXplorist vs. Triton. On the eXplorist, you use the little joystick and highlight your POI and BOOM! You are down the trail and running! The Triton...I lost count of how many screens and menus it took. Yes it does have the same pretty icons but who cares if you can't use them!? I thought one of the biggest selling points of the Triton was that you don't have to be a scientist to use it. Maybe for those that can afford the touchscreen 2000's that is the case... I just bought a Garmin GPSMap 60CX for less than the Triton 500 (Garmin even has a $50 rebate to boot).
  17. I have been a dedicated Magellan fan for years (even before my caching days). Don't really know what Magellan was thinking with the Triton. I am very familiar with their software and operating systems and this just doesn't seem like it was anyone expected. If you are willing to wait for the numerous firmware updates, more power to you. I can't believe I'm going to say it but I'm going with a Garmin.... So sad
  18. I have been a dedicated Magellan user for years. Essentially, I've used a Magellan product for my business and geocaching since I knew GPS existed. You couldn't pry my eXplorist out of my hands...that is until I got word about the new Triton series to be released. It wasn't more than a couple days until I had a Triton 500 ordered (unfortunately through DELL...another story). Needless to say, I just receieved my Triton yesterday. I am very familiar with Magellan's software and operating systems and all I can say about the new "state of the art" Triton is . . . I'm going GARMIN. What was Magellan thinking when they released an unproven and very poor system like this to the public. I don't mind putting a little time in until I figure out a new system for my receivers but this is ridiculous. On a positive note: AMAZING ACCURACY / QUICK SATs On a negative note: You can't do anything with it!!! Magellan has made this supposedly user friendly interface system into something an astronaut couldn't figure out. Ground distance in miles when looking for geocaches and elevation above 4000 ft. The goto menus are just flat-out annoying and data transfer is horrible. What happened to doing a quickie GOTO on the background map on the eXplorist? Downloading maps from NG TOPO!...yeah right. That only takes an update, a couple more software transfers and a couple asprin. Been using Magellans for years and this just isn't worth the time and patiences. It is a sad day for Magellan.
  19. YUP! My Bangladeshian buddies at DELL have been telling me the same thing. Unfortunately, I have to ride this one out because I talked them down in price AND sold my old receiver. DO NOT ( I repeat ) DO NOT EVER BUY FROM DELL!!!!!!
  20. DO NOT ( I repeat ) DO NOT ORDER A TRITON FROM DELL!!!! They wrote have been advertising that the Triton 500 would be available online since November. Needless to say, my order has been delayed at least three times. Can we go for four??? Crappy outsourced, overseas service reps have no idea what they are talking about (when you can understand their English). Is Magellan or Dell to blame here? Any comments?
