  1. Sounds fair to me, I'll give it a whirl tonight and hope that it works. Thanks!
  2. I've got a Vista thats not quite two weeks old and it seems to have a problem with powering itself off. Sometimes it might go hours, other times it may be only minutes. Look down and the screen is blank, unit is off. Turn it back on and it works fine. Now when I bought my Legend three or four years ago it seems like it did the same thing for a short while...but its been so long now that I can't fully recall. Anyone else have this problem and or a fix? I hate the thought of having to ship it back and being without even for only a few days.
  3. Got me again last night... Only spent a few minutes looking as I was trying to ditch the swarm of mosquitos following me but when I got home and logged on I found it to be archived. Perhaps I could convince my daughter to break open her piggy bank and get me a pda for Fathers Day?
  4. As before I really do appreciate the help/tips/ideas. Unfortunately they really don't help me a whole lot. Again, I try to keep my pages as current as possible but whenever I leave the house my binder goes with me. A good portion of the time my caching is spontaneous. I'm never really sure where I'm going, it just happens. When I say I have a binder full of pages, I mean I have a binder FULL of pages. From my home coords I've got nearly every cache for roughly a 30 mile radius of home and a 2" binder that is packed full. Running into the archived cache sites hasn't been a major issue. I've only had it happen maybe half a dozen times. So I spend a half hour or better looking for something that isn't there....there have been many other times where I've spent much more time looking for something that IS there and didn't find it. Yeah, I've got my share of DNF's. Just means I go back again. When I go to log my DNF and find its archived, I've been simply posting a note and then toss my cache page out. Just one that I don't have to make a second trip looking for. Anyhow, that's why I see it would be beneficial...to me. But hey, its not critical either.
  5. Why? The geocaching.com site is quite current. In fact it is as current as it can get. It may be quite current, but not when your using the paper method. I know its not the best way, but its pretty much my only way currently. I have a binder full of cache pages...I update it as often as I can but its all done while at work. I have dial-up access at home with no printer. So, on the weekends I don't log in very often... Someday when I have the luxury of a pda, gsak, a premium membership and a great home system with high speed net....I probably won't give a rats arse about the archived notification. I still think it would be a great addition but thats just my two cents.
  6. I asked pretty much the same question a few weeks ago but was told just as stated above, they don't want us using "stale" data. Of course the only problem is I have no choice but to continue on using "stale" data even though having archived information would help to keep my information more "fresh". ::shrugs:: Thread
  7. I seriously think I might deck the next person that says that. I have exactly 84 cents in my bank account. Now lets think.. Should I save that to apply towards my credit card or should I 'put it in the piggy until there's enough saved for the precious Miss Phelps'? Had to laugh just because it sounds familiar. Last time I checked my balance I had $1.71 available...
  8. The case has to come off... The battery cover that comes with the mount has a "slide" on it and that is how it mounts to the bracket.
  9. I've been using it for a couple years now with no complaints at all. As for the battery cover that comes with it, I keep that on my unit all the time. Its not that big of a difference and still fits just fine inside the neoprene carry case when its not on the bike. I've never noticed anything loose nor have I used a lanyard, it clicks into place and will not fall out.
  10. Well the biggest killer here is funds... I wish I could pull up the internet on my cell phone, or have a pda, high speed internet from home, premium membership etc. Unfortunately right now, can't do it... If anyone is familiar with divorce attorneys and their fees you'll understand why. I'm on what you might call a limited budget. Geocaching is something I can do for no more than the price of gas getting me to the area. Many times I ride my bike so it doesn't cost a dime...
  11. Well I figured it was worth a whirl and thanks for the replies. As for having the most accurate info, yes I agree...that would be best. For me personally though, having the local archived caches on that weekly mailing would do just that. It would keep me more accurate. As it stands right now I'm going to loose all internet access at home in the very near future which means I will only have access at work, Monday thru Friday. Thanks again, -Bob / Folshen
  12. I guess the easiest thing to do would be simply keep my pages more updated. I just need a working printer and something other than dial-up at home. I know the best way would be not to print them until ready to go out hunting, but I rarely seem to plan on it. I just keep the binder with me and quite often its a spur of the moment thing. ::shrugs::
  13. I'm curious as to if this would be valuble to anyone else... I print out cache pages at work and keep them in a binder. I don't have a printer at home currently nor do I have a PDA. Twice this past weekend I searched for a cache that had been archived recently. It's also happened to me once before. I'm just wondering if it would be possible to get a weekly notification just like the new cache listings but for archived ones?
  14. I have the same unit and as for accessories I have... Mapsource Metroguide (like the detailed maps, use it often) Carrying Case (since its normally in my hand this is nice incase I drop it) Handlebar Mount (whenever I can cache via bike I do) Cigarette Lighter Adapter (used rarely...should have invested in batteries instead) As for listing in order of importance and what you should buy, that's hard to do. All depends on just what your planning on using it for. For cost vs. benefit I'd definitely say get the carrying case. From there, get what you need as you discover that need. Enjoy!
  15. Well if its Digraph, Homophonic or Playfair Cipher then the following link might offer some help to ya... http://www.simonsingh.net/The_Black_Chambe...honiccipher.htm ...of course figuring out just how to decipher some of them can still be quite fun. Enjoy!
  16. I've had the unit for a couple years with no problems...just wanted to make sure this wasn't an upcoming problem. So long as its not just mine I guess all is well. Thanks, -Folshen
  17. It was nearly a week ago and in the middle of the woods... How far is the Vulture tree from the cache site... I'm gonna say maybe twenty feet? -Folshen
  18. Well since you're obviously referring to my log of this cache we did NOT come up and disturb the vulture. When we spotted what was apparently the "vultures tree" we actually skirted it a ways since we knew by the logs that the cache was NOT in that tree. As I said, he didn't peek out and we didn't peek in...."kept waiting" simply meant that I half expected it too fly out. I can't imagine there are too many people who after reading the logs would go stick their head in that hole. -Folshen
  19. Ok, the fastest my Legend has ever travelled is maybe a little over a hundred miles per hour... Settings had just been cleared a couple weeks ago yet I noticed yesterday that on the Max Speed listing it shows 437MPH... ??? Any idea what caused this and why? Unit seems to be working just fine. Thanks, Folshen
  20. Michigan Geocoins can be found here... http://www.mi-geocaching.org/store/product...?products_id=15
  21. I've been quietly taking it all in for a couple years now...
  22. I managed to get 7' accuracy today with my Legend but I was in the middle of a lake. Prior to that I'd never seen better than 16' and normally average around 20'.
  23. ...because the more cover the harder it is to find! ...because there is nothing like the site of a nice can! ...two words, "trade up".

I'd like to know if what I did under similiar circumstances was alright... I marked a waypoint at the site, moved about twenty yards back into a bit of a clearing then repeated the process until I had eight waypoints. Once back home I simply added up the last three digits of my eight waypoints then divided by eight. The final number is what I used, was this "ok" or a bad idea?
