  1. Is this trend starts to pick up is going to mess up the sport. I guess we would have to take drastic measures and reveal any new cache's coords to just a select few without using the site, maybe through email or something. I just hope it never gets to this...

  2. There should be a rule that all new NJ geocachers must find a cache by Artful Dodger, Hartclimbs, Team Magster, Skully & Mulder, King Pellinore, or Marty621 first...and definitely before they place a cache.

I totally agree with you, we should create a list of the top 10 caches to do before becoming an "Official Cache Placer" or something along those lines.

Each one of those caches should have an unique personality that would define a part of the sport, while providing a consistent base in Coords accuracy, clever hidden location, challenge and accessibility.

I understand that this kind of thing would not be possible, or even necessary in places where caches are few and scarce; but If something like that were implemented in cache-overpopulated areas, I'm sure it would make the caches approver's life easier while it would elevate the quality of the sport.

Anything that would be implemented should at least clearly define what a 1Star and a 3Star means,

One of the main issues I found in my short Geocaching experience is that many caches are misrated. Many rated as 1Star should be at least 2, and some looked as if they were thrown from a car. I don't really care since I enjoy challenging caches of any rating, but if I decide to take someone to a one star cache, I want it to be just that people! I just hate misrated caches...

I love the new Icon-System some of you are using, they are really helpful to determine what to expect when you take children along, Poison Ivy warnings, or close to parking area icons could be used if they are not already.

As for myself I'm still learning from all the "great ones" to hide my first. I know is hard to resist the temptation to hide one right a way when someone starts, but I think time would show that the wait is worth it...

    Just my grain of sand...

  3. In my opinion since the spot was so close to the trail, it could well be that somebody else saw a geocacher in the area while he was looking for, or retrieving the cache, and then decided to find out what was this searching all about.

If this person read the info on the cache I would assume it would still be there with an extra log entry, but the fact that the cache was vandalized makes me think it was a group of teens playing around...

On the other hand it could also be the result of a raccoon or another animal, I noticed once in a while, that people left Dog treats and cookies inside caches, this could attract animals, and with their sense of smell, no GPS would be necessary.

I won't think that there's somebody out there that has the time to hike into the woods looking for caches, just with the ill intentions of destroying it once its found, if at all it would be stolen all together.

I know a geocacher encountered a copperhead at my Osio Rock cache a few months ago

Actually it was two snakes, not one, the other one was much smaller but was also a copperhead. For a moment I thought I was surround by them. They were a feet or so apart from each other, and after taking the shot I did not feel like looking to see if they were more.

It was close to the first stage of the Osio Rock Cache in a Rock Formation that I had to climb as the trail passed through it.

I was suspicious that it was poisonous as I remember reading somewhere that some poisonous snakes tend to have a triangular or pointy head. But I did not recognize the snake until I posted the pic here.

Not really, there are already a few in the area, part of a "multi" and it would be too close to them. On the other side, I'm in a learning phase, and still thinking about my first,

  7. This is an Interesting SplitRock that reminded me of a Troll's Head. I found it on my way to the SplitRock Splendor Cache & I was wondering if anybody could give me some inside on the origen of those huge lonely rocks.

    Thanks!

  8. Yesterday I went to a few caches and after finishing my last, at The Van Slyke Castle , I headed out north through the white trail. To my surprise I discovered by a beautiful outlook, a tower-like structure even nicer than the castle ruins itself! it was not far from there & I'm sure this is related to the castle in some manner but I couldn't make out its purpose.

I was wondering if anybody here would know. It's built right on the rock and I would love to see the view it has from the top, but I'm afraid the ceiling is rotting and besides not having any access to the top, I doubt it would support anybody.

I'm sure if it doesn't have any already, interesting Urban legends could be build around this place, by giving it an interesting name like ,"The Secret Tower", "The Torture Tower" or something along those lines...LOL icon_wink.gif

    from the log:

"...it looked like a mini tower and I was wondering what its purpose was, as I couldn't make it out, the top did not look like it had access to be a viewing point, nor it looked like a mill to me, may be some storage area?"

I added a buch of pictures as well as a couple of aerials from my track, I totally forgot to mark a waypoint, but it was fairly easy to spot, if you follow the white trail north from the castle; it was not to far from there.

    Thanks! icon_smile.gif

  9. Thanks, I got to check the trailside center again then, it's been a while since I was there.

I did not now how rare this snakes are, the fact is that I actually found two on this trip! the other one was also a copperhead but smaller and not as impressive so I just took the picture of this one. They were just 2 feet apart from each other on the same trail.

  10. Thanks, I thought it looked dangerous. When I took the picture I was at a safe distance away from it, but since I used my camera's highest resolution setting I was still able to get a nice cropping area to get to the detail.

I just wish I had my SLR and it's zoom today, since I had a really cool Bear sighting that I was just able to get from a distance. He crossed a few feet in front of the trail I was on, but when I got the camera ready he was already on his way. I did not feel like stalking him, just in case he changed his mind I thought of playing catch with me or something.

  11. I found this snake on my way to "Osio Rock Ramble " today and I was wondering, if anybody would know what kind is it and if it's a venomous one. I almost stepped on it, but realized just on time! I was surprised how calm it was. It did not show any signs of aggression nor the intention of leaving the area after been detected.

    Thanks in advance!

  12. I read somewhere that to be infected, the tick needs to be attached to the host for al least 24hours, so as long as one gets home and puts their gear into a nice washing, and then take a shower, they should be ok.

I also heard a while ago, something about a new Lyme Disease vaccine. I was wondering if anybody here had those shots, and if so, how effective are they.

  13. I guess anything that puts it over any of the others you did. Some of the ones that maid you say, cool! or "I got to bring somebody along next time"

I guess a nice combination of view, location & hiding spot. It doesn't have to be just Central NJ, but since those are the ones closer to home I'll have more chances to do them first.

    Thanks again!

  14. I've been taking Digital Pictures since day one. I always take one of the cache with my GPS showing the Coords. Then I take another of the actual hiding place and another of the contents. And if the area is nice, or bring my Team along, I record our all our trip in pictures. Once I get home, Each cache has it's own folder in the order I found them, I also give each picture the same number and the name of the cache in question.

  15. I was wondering if any of you have a particular favorite cache or recommendation for a "must do" in NJ. I'm first targeting Central NJ caches but I can consider everything if it's worth the trip.

    Thanks a lot!

but every time I look, seeing that fake account sitting in the top 10 in several places really irks me.

I was not aware of any top ten lists at this website, It's that something only paying members get?

  18. I've been following this thread, and I still can't believe somebody would just get into this hobby to showoff the numbers. I thought the hole idea here was to enjoy the hunt, if this guy or gal likes to create false logs to infuse his ego...hey! it's his loss, not mine. He doesn't know what he's missing.

An interesting twist to avoid this kind of stuff in the future, would be to have everyone at their own caches some kind of token or card for everyone who visits with the information about the cache.

This way people would start to collect those as proofs of finds, instead of counting Logs on the internet.

So if they like to show of their Geocaching skills, they would only need to bring their "proofs".

    Just my two cents. icon_smile.gif

  19. I'm trying to figure out how can I search for caches of a certain Type (virtual, regular..etc..) and/or rating. So far I could only do it by zipcode or location.

Does anybody know if this is possible?

    Thanks in advance.

  20. I thought of that, but then I saw the warning:

"Warning. Spoilers may be included in the descriptions or links."

I was hoping that this, or any other GCsite had implemented some kind of voting system or something, so when somebody logs a cache, this information could be accessed without having to read the logs and therefore, avoiding any potential "spoiler".

    Thanks again

  21. I'm still waiting to get my new Meridian Gold to get into this interesting Hobby. While I'm waiting, I was looking into some Caches in my area that I could use as my firsts.

That's when I thought if there was any way that I could check out, (in this or another site), how good the cache is (either for it's placement, location or contents) besides the Difficulty Grade I saw at this site.

    Thanks in advance to all.
