  1. I just checked the details of that rebate, and it's only good if you are upgrading from an old version of Mapsource US Topo. http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/0..._V31778602_.pdf You're right, thanks for pointing that out. I edited my post to correct that.
  2. $48.87 at Amazon after rebate (for upgrading from older version), and free shipping too.
  3. Are you referring to Garmin Topo US 2008? If so, I will look into getting that. I hadn't realized it was compatible with the Mac, but that's good to know. Thanks.
  4. I'd like to get the preloaded west coast topo maps on micro SD card for my new Vista HCx. Found it at Amazon for $63+$9 postage. Has anyone seen a better price on these somewhere? Are there any other options for getting topo maps into a Vista HCx with a Mac? I've found other topo progarms but nothing that supports downloads of the maps. Thanks.
  5. Just got an e-mail that mine ships tomorrow!
  6. Just ordered mine http://www.gpsonsale.com/garmin/products/VistaHCX.htm
  7. I'm a Mac guy but maybe I can help. You are starting your download from this page, right? http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=3607 Then right click on the download link http://www8.garmin.com/software/InstallGar...Plugin_2110.exe and select something like "download link target" or whatever that translates to on a PC. That should start the download. I just downloaded the Plugin to my desktop successfully, but I can't install it until they provide Mac support someday.
  8. The file you are downloading is MacCMConvert-2-1-2.sitx, which has to be uncompressed on your mac with Stuffit Expander, http://www.stuffit.com/mac/expander/index.html Once it's uncompressed it should be ready to install on your mac. I use MacCMConvert and it works perfectly for preparing files for my Palm PDA.
  9. I have the same yellow eTrex as you, and the waypoints field holds a maximum of six characters AFAIK. However, the truncation on mine occurs at the beginning of the waypoint name, so GC105JK gets shortened to C105JK, and I now have lots of stored waypoints beginning with "C", but their names are still unique. I don't know of a solution for this as I assume it's a limitation of the eTrex itself. I'm using GPSBabel to download BTW.
  10. http://www.gpsnow.com has them in stock and shipping...i order from them all the time. they are great and ship same day! Tried to order but, "We're sorry. This item is currently out of stock. We do not accept orders for items that are not in stock."
  11. Is that Walmart price for online sales only, or is it also available at the retail stores?
  12. Here's another useful Mac/Garmin site. It's been posted here before but not for awhile: http://www.bensinclair.com/article/how-to-...r-mac?printer=2
  13. Thinking about upgrading to a 60CSx from a yellow eTrex. I use the eTrex in a bicycle handlebar mount, and I'm wondering if anyone has experience with the 60 series handlebar mount? Unlike the eTrex mount where the battery compartment cover is part of the mount, the 60 series mount looks like just a cradle that the GPSr snaps into. If that's true, I'm wondering how secure the GPSr is in that mount. The 60 series handlebar mount looks like the same as the windshield mount, same cradle, but with a different attachment to vehicle. Thanks for any info.
  14. You can start with this for info on geocaching with a Mac: http://jfatherton.0catch.com/MacCMConvert/geomac.html You won't be able to download waypoints directly from geocaching.com using the "Send to GPS" button, that doesn't work with a Mac yet. Although Garmin reports "Mac Support coming soon" for that plug in. You will need to download the waypoint as a .loc or .gpx file and transfer it to your GPS with something like GPSBabel (what I use). The USB issue is something I don't have experience with. I'm not sure that a Mac to GPS transfer will work via USB. I know there were reports of some problem with the Garmin USB interface, which hopefully have been fixed by now. Maybe someone else can comment on this. My GPS has only a serial interface so I use a Keyspan USB to serial converter and it works perfectly with my iMac. Hope this helps. Good to see more Mac users around.
  15. I got my registration number with a couple of hours of paying, this was two weeks ago. I would contact Smittyware. I'm sure they will take care of you.
  16. Start with this: http://jfatherton.0catch.com/MacCMConvert/geomac.html If you only want to download .gpx or .loc files to a GPS then GPSBabel may be all you need. You can't download caches directly from geocaching.com to a Mac, but you can easily create .loc or .gpx files containing the caches you want and load those into your GPS with GPSBabel. I wanted to go paperless with a Palm PDA, so I also use MacCMConvert and CacheMate (in the Palm). It may seem a little confusing at first, but everything I needed to do can be done easily with the Mac, with the exception of downloading the Garmin maps onto an SD card. I think the only answer to the map downloads is to buy preloaded cards from Garmin.
  17. Yes, I did use the "Home Coordinates" checkbox as the origin for my PQ. If I understand you correctly, I should enter my home coordinates as lat/long directly on the PQ Toolbox page. I will do that from now on. Thanks for the help.
  18. UPDATE: Minutes ago I ran the same PQ again, nothing was modified, and the gpx file contained all 84 records as it should. So I consider this to be a bug, and something to be aware of when running a Pocket Query. Might be advisable to double check that your output file contains the correct number of records before downloading it to GPS or PDA.
  19. The first indication was that only 19 records were downloaded to my GPS and PDA. I then opened the gpx file using "textedit" (on a Mac) and searched for the delimiter "<desc>", and found 19 occurrences, one for each record. Thanks for the help with this.
  20. I created a Pocket Query consisting of all traditional, unfound caches within a radius of 5 miles of my home coordinates. I previewed the PQ and got 84 records, about what I would expect. I then ran the PQ and got a zip file consisting of 1228883.gpx and 1228883-wpt.gpx. The first gpx file has 19 records and the second gpx file has 1 record in it. I previewed the PQ again after running it and still see 84 records. Can anyone tell me why I only got 20 records, and in 2 files, instead of 84 records in a single gpx file? Thanks for any help.
  21. Got it. Now I see what you are doing. I didn't realize the contacts would be merged as I was only using the contacts for caching. Excellent on adding the logs, that's something I was wanting. I'll definitely try it out tomorrow. I should have read your README file before posting .
  22. GPSBabel also does this. Just export the .gpx file in Vcard format. Then drag and drop the Vcard into the iPod contacts folder. Works great although the screen on my Nano is pretty small.
  23. I got an e-mail quote of $230 from gpsonsale.com. They are out of stock until the end of July. Don't know shipping cost.
  24. That's good news. But looks like I will have to update from 10.3 to 10.4 to be able to use either application. Do you think it's worth waiting for Leopard or should I just update to Tiger now. I'm running an iMac G4 1GHz flat screen.
  25. Thanks trainlove, that's good information. I'll find out what program she is using to download, and also experiment with GSAK. Is the comment field on the Vista large enough that the cache description could also be included? With enough information in the comment, the gps alone could be used for paperless caching. Have you tried that? Thanks.
