  1. I currently have the Garmin 62s and download 1000 caches as a PQ. The question is wouldnt it be good if the 'Personal Cache Note' field downloaded to the cache description? A recent software upgrade offers 'Next Stage' for Multi Stage caches, but take a situation as follows.... Cache series with clues to final - sometimes we do not get chance to visit all caches in a series in one day. We note the clues for the final as field notes, and then store the clues under the Personal Cache Note on the cache page, on our return. A few weeks may pass..... then a new PQ is downloaded..... we go out and if one of the series is the 'nearest cache', we do not have the Personal Cache Notes on the Garmin 62s in order to be able to complete the series. Another situation is as follows....... Puzzle Caches - we may have a spare few mins to look at some Puzzle Caches..... we work out the clues and then the final coords to the cache. We may not get chance to visit the caches in the next week or so, so we put the final coords on the cache page as a Personal Cache Note. Wouldnt it be good if this info is then downloaded when the next PQ is run? Also, if this info was downloaded, it would be good if the Garmin 62s could 'recognise' the coords and then provided a 'GO' facility to save having to retype the coords back into the unit. To me this makes caching truely 'paperless' and saves carrying around info that the unit should be able to hold. What are people's thoughts on this? Regards Steve
  2. Thanks for the feedback. I contacted Garmin UK earlier today by phone, and they told me that they were unaware of the issue. They asked me to send an email detailing the problem, which I did..... The email was addressed to the individual I spoke to. I await their response and look forward to this issue been resolved in a later version of the software. They also confirmed that there is no forum topic available to post this into on the garmin forum site - another issue he told me he would investigate. I'll post back any response I get from them, and will chase in a week or so, if they do not get back to me. I have an individual's name as single point of contact. Regards Steve
  3. Am not familiar with the specific problem you presented, but am curious to know why you avoid the vehicle unit -- unless it's a "built-in", in which case I can fully understand, and the rest of this can be ignored. Besides the price, the inability to load my own custom POIs is one of the many reasons I still won't buy an in-dash system (yet). Many of the stand-alone units designed for vehicle use can easily have the same cache waypoints loaded that you use on your 62. Rather than programming individually, you can usually load them in "bulk" just like you would your 62. Thanks for the feedback. My car sat nav is the detachable type and I have programmed it up before with the caches, but since moving to the Garmin 62s, I find that its easier to just dump 1000 caches into it and go, as opposed to bringing in the satnav and having to program 2 units - its just easier for me to hit 'navigate on roads' if the need arises to get me to a new location wihich has a few caches. Everytime I load a PQ, I would have to load a fresh set into the car one, just in case of new caches in the area. I would then have to search the car system for the cache in question..... easier to just hit 'navigate on raods' on the 62s. I have the Garmin GB Discoverer 1:50K maps loaded for the UK.... to quote Garmin.... 'The premium NAVTEQ road data is the same detailed data included in our leading automotive products - with thousands of addresses and points of interest, including lodging, food and drink, car parks, banks, petrol stations, attractions, campsites, and more. Search for an address or point of interest, and your Garmin device displays turn-by-turn directions to your destination' Hope this answers your question. Best Regards Steve

  6. Possible software bug with using Profiles? Here we have the situation. 2 Profiles – Geocaching and Car. The idea is not to use ( and therefore not have to program ) the in-car sat nav to navigate between cache sites. Hence I have used the 62s with a Car profile, set to ‘recalculate on road’. In the Car profile, all I want the map screen to show is the ‘3D’ map – without any data fields showing. I have gone into map setup and made sure that ‘data fields’ is set to ‘0’. Now I change profile to Geocaching. On the Geocaching profile, I want the map screen to show the Geocaching Dashboard as the ‘data field’ at the top, but when I start to navigate ( ie move ) the Geocaching Dashboard disappears. I have gone into map setup, down to ‘data fields’ and notice that this has changed to ‘custom’. I investigate further and note that ‘when navigating’ the datafield is set to ‘0’ and the ‘when not navigating’ is set to ‘Geocaching’ – which would explain the behaviour of the missing dashboard when moving. I then go back to ‘data fields’ and set this to ‘Geocaching’ – the dashboard now remains at the top of the map page while moving and standing still. Now back into the Car profile….onto the map page. Into map setup, and notice that the ‘data fields’ has now changed to ‘custom’. I go into this and now note that the datafields have changed …. ‘when navigating’ is now set to ‘automotive’ and ‘when not navigating’ is now set to ‘0’ – but I want the max size screen when driving to the next cache site without any data fields showing – but the automotive dashboard comes up when I start moving. I reset it back to ‘0’, and then go and investigate the Geocaching profile once again…… and find that this has now changed….. data fields have gone back to ‘custom’ and ‘when navigating’ the datafield is set to ‘0’ and the ‘when not navigating’ is set to ‘Geocaching’…… I have deleted all profiles and started afresh, but the problem still exists. I am currently running the latest 2.80 software. ( It was also present on 2.70 ). I also have a ‘Boat’ profile which uses Bluechart marine maps and changing the ‘data fields’ ‘custom’ ‘when navigating’ seems to change across all profiles, when the idea of profiles is that it should remember the setting relevant to the profile in use. The interesting thing is that the ‘when not navigating’ data field is remembered to the specific profile. I was wondering if anyone else has this issue, and if it is a possible software bug that needs fixing? If so, how do we tell Garmin of the issue? The Garmin Forum site doesn’t seem to have a category to ask this question. Thank you in advance.
  7. Hi Wonder if anyone can advise on what may be causing the following problem?..... When I do a 'Search for nearest caches from your home coordinates', I get some missing info down the left-hand side of the page - esp the 'miles from home coordinates' - all I can see is the 'i'. This has only happened since the recent changes. The green border seems to be hiding the info. I noticed this on a 800x600 screen resolution monitor. Should the coding be made to 'relative' and not 'absolute' ie Main box coded as % of screen resolution and not set to absolute?????? Had a search of other threads in this topic, and couldn't find a relevant answer, so appologies in advance if this has already been discussed. Otherwise looks a good cosmetic 'upgrade'.... Thanks

  9. Hi As the initiator of this thread, firstly I would like to thank everyone for their input, esp the people who have brought to our attention the Firefox GreaseMonkey Icons. These are just what I was looking for... thanks!! This thread was initially started as an email to GC.com ( Eric ), before opening it up on here for general discussion. Eric tells me that the GC.com developers read these comments, so...... as we are all getting excited at the use of the new icons, may I take this oppertunity to say to any developers reading, that this seems like a good idea to intergrate into the GC.com website, so that users can access this type of information. As we can see from the comments in this thread, even those that did not know these icons existed from a third party ( myself included ) are pleased with the info displayed..... so can we please consider this proposal and hopefully have this info integrated into GC.com on the next software upgrade? Thanks to all for your supportive comments. Steve
  10. Doesnt the JS script run locally on your PC via Firefox, hence you are only recovering the data from GC.com once and the script does the calcs from the data retrieved? Having said that, I think counters of this type would be great on the GC.com site so all users can see them, irrespective of browser used? Steve
  11. Hi Many thanks for your reply. Detailed info 'totals by log type' is exactly what I was looking for - I was unaware of this Java Script add-on, so many thanks for sharing this with us. Looking at the script, it even works out if a smily icon is used in the text and eliminates these to provide an accurate total summary, which is great! I personally do not like FireFox - can you tell me how to integrate the JS addon into Internet Explorer? Cheers Steve
  12. I take your point regarding the DNFs - I know some people do not log these as it 'affects their street cred' - silly really, but for some it really is a numbers game...... Maybe I used popularity incorrectly...... 1) I still think the 'logged visits counter' does not reflect true unique visits. 2) The counter could be expanded to indicate 'average days between visits' and then users could read this as they wished.
  13. Eric from geocaching.com has suggested I drop this comment into this forum..... It is my view that the Logged Visits Counter does not reflect a true count on the number of unique visits to a particular cache. Here is a good example. All other cache counters work the same way. For this particular example, I think there should be 4 logged visits and not 7. I'll explain why next to each user comment logged below. xxxxxxxxxxxxxx GCxxxxxxx Logged Visits ( 7 total. Visit the Gallery (7 images) ) FIND March 17 by xxxxx (119 found) A FIND, SO COUNTS AS 1 FIND March 11 by xxxxx (1241 found) A FIND, SO COUNTS AS 1 FIND March 11 by xxxxx (1464 found) A FIND, SO COUNTS AS 1 NOTE March 11 by xxxxx (720 found) JUST A NOTE BY THE OWNER. THIS SHOULD NOT COUNT AS A 'LOGGED VISIT' March 11 by xxxxx (638 found) A FIND, SO COUNTS AS 1 March 10 by Deceangi (1 found) Published NOT A LOGGED VISIT. THIS IS MERELY A PUBLICATION NOTE. THIS GUY HAS NEVER VISITED THE CACHE. THIS SHOULD NOT COUNT AS A 'LOGGED VISIT'. March 10 by xxxxx (720 found) Coin & TB Drop. WE ARE ALL THERE WHEN WE HIDE THE CACHE AT THE BEGINNING ARNT WE? THIS COMMENT ADDS NO VALUE, AS THE TB AND COIN STATUS ARE REFLECTED IN THE INVENTORY BOX. AGAIN THIS SHOULD NOT COUNT TOWARDS THE COUNTER. As you can see from my comments above, the current counter does not reflect 'Logged Visits' as its name suggests. An automatic rule could be used to apply the counter... Counter=Counter+1 'IF and only IF' a log is made that has the attribute 'Found it' AND that user has not logged a find on this cache before. Not sure what database you use for the site, but a very simple rule to apply to the code. The counter can then be renamed to 'Unique finds'. I think this is of more value to prospective cachers, as it gives an truer indication of popularity. Things could then get a little more interesting if you factor in the age of the cache...... If a cache is 3 days old with 10 unique visits, its quite popular and possibly easy. If a cache is 80 days old and has only had 4 unique visits, then this could indicate quite a hard cache and one to visit for a challenge. Can you see where I am coming from with my ideas? The first eg could have a score of 0.3 days between visits, and the last eg could have 20 days between visits. The higher the number the more of a challenge the cache would be! You could even change these numbers to % - the higher the % the harder the cache. Does anyone have any comments on the ideas above? Thanks for reading. Steve
