  1. No offense to the folks with good intentions, but I don't believe that this cache should be allowed. Like you said, there are better ways to donate to a charity if you really feel the need. And, it isn't that I don't trust the person that claims to make the donations, but the cache is only going to lead to questions and suspicion, imho. Apparently, it already has, since you posted about it here. And despite everyone probably having good intentions, there is always going to be someone that wants to throw a stick into the wheel... someone is bound to plunder the cache, leading to hurt feelings for all. Heck, people steal 'worthless' caches - why wouldn't someone go and loot this one? I hate 'rules' being applied to the hobby - but some rules, possibly prohibiting caches like this, seem more like they just prevent any problems before they start. Any opinions on my opinion are appreciated. Rubbertoe - Webcam - Image Archives --== http://www.bigfoot.com/~rbatina ==--
  2. I've decided to expect that NONE of my Travel Bugs will reach their goal, or make it back home - so that way if they do, I'll be pleasantly surprised. My bugs will have fairly simple goals - and like I said, I've got some laminated instruction cards I'm gonna attach with the tag... anything to give them a step up on their journey. 4. I snagged my first Travel Bug from a cache about 30 miles from here, and have already drug him around with me while camping this past weekend - and am planning to release him into one of my newly hidden caches within a couple of days. Getting a bit excited about this new aspect of the hobby, for me, I decided to order a 4-pack of tags. Now I'm starting to wonder if I'm gonna have fun with them after reading some of the stories in the forums here. People taking them without logging, people telling everyone your tag number so you get bogus miles and logs, and people just downright apparently stealing them. Looks like TBs have a pretty limited lifespan. And it worries me more because I've already had one cache stolen, another one vandalized more than once... and other caches in the area have been stolen and trashed as well. And I've only placed like 5 or 6 I think. I already dislike most humans... I'm hoping these 4 travel bugs don't give me 4 more reasons to validate my feelings. You can bet your butt I'm gonna put detailed instructions on mine, so there will be no excuse that someone didn't understand what they were supposed to do. 6. I was just looking at the 'how to use a travel bug' page - and I noticed there isn't any mention about keeping the travel bug number a secret. To most of us, it is obvious that you wouldn't want to reveal a tag number in a picture or in a log, because then ANYONE could enter that number and claim they have that travel bug. However, I've seen both logs and photos that clearly tell the tag number of a travel bug. Perhaps somewhere in the 'how to' page of travel bugs, there should be bold letters saying DO NOT REVEAL THE TAG NUMBER IN THE ONLINE LOGS OR PHOTOS or something... someone can think of better wording. But just as they do with revealed serial numbers at wheresgeorge.com - there are gonna be morons out here who have to screw around with someone's travel bugs, giving them fake travels across the world... racking up thousands of bogus miles by just entering the number that is listed in a log, or in an image. Why do they do it? Who knows... they just do. Rubbertoe - Webcam - Image Archives --== http://www.bigfoot.com/~rbatina ==--

  8. What's not to like with the upload method for benchmarks? Seems pretty idiot proof, to me - I uploaded a handfull of benchmark images the other day, and I didn't have to resize them manually or anything. Pretty much just send 'em up and you're good to go. 9. I've been trying to upload a picture to a travel bug log page, but I am getting an error. My image is under 100k, and I'm not doing anything differently than when I upload images to regular cache pages. Anyone else having problems? Here's the error response, I'll probably e-mail it to the site folks as well: The page cannot be displayed There is a problem with the page you are trying to reach and it cannot be displayed. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please try the following: Click the Refresh button, or try again later. 10. Okay, I could understand it if a city was littered with benchmarks - it might help surveyors get measurements a little easier... but how on earth can a few benchmarks peppered over many miles really help with anything? I live near Lancaster Ohio, and there really aren't that many benchmarks around - here is an overhead view of the town, along with the benchmarks in the area, as downloaded from this site: Lancaster Ohio Map Link As you can see, it doesn't really look like there are enough marks to help with anything... and, the few that I've found so far - quite a few of them were considerably off from the posted coordinates. Just wondering the logic of these little disks. [] Rubbertoe - Webcam - Image Archives --== http://www.bigfoot.com/~rbatina ==--

  12. I just asked this in my other question... but is there a quick way to find out what benchmarks other members have found? I know you can check the profiles to see what geocaches people have found or hid, but I haven't seen a quick way for the benchmarks yet. (Just found my first marks on a whim today... bear with me) Rubbertoe - Webcam - Image Archives --== http://www.bigfoot.com/~rbatina ==--
  13. Found a few benchmarks today - there were 4 within a few hundred feet of each other, however - one of those that I found, and perhaps the second one as well... I'm unable to log them, because I can't bring them up on the site here. The ones that I did log, were JY1709, JY1708, and JY1423. However, there was another one - a disc - which I found, but could not find an entry for. Doing a search at http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/ds_radius.prl I found that one of the markers that I logged referred to PIDs numbered CE6802 and CE6801 - and I can't find any info on either one of those. I'm fairly certain I logged the correct benchmarks, but now I am wondering if the CE6801 or CE6802 PIDs are one of the others that I found. Any info you can give is appreciated. Oh, and is there an easy way to see what benchmarks someone has found? Kinda like how you can click the profile and see caches owned/found? 14. I generally use Duracell Ultras - and I can get a LONG long time out of those. So long that I can't really tell you what the continuous usage would be... I know I can go out for several hours, come home - go out again for several hours, come home... and probably one more time after that. One set of batteries can give me several long days of seeking. I don't even use the battery save... although I don't have the compass or waas activated. Rubbertoe - Webcam - Image Archives --== http://www.bigfoot.com/~rbatina ==--
  15. I admit I haven't looked through all the threads on here - I guess I'm just becoming a little bit disappointed with the hobby lately, due to all the crappy things that have been happening. It started off with some other local caches being stolen... then after placing a cache in a local park, I was sent an e-mail complaining about it and letting me know that the property authorities have been alerted of my actions. And now I've finally had one of my own caches stolen. And I've only placed 4 or 5. I guess maybe "stolen" isn't the correct word - since they ARE out there waiting to be found and explored. But I think we all know what I mean. When I hide my cache, I take the time to try to find a good location - I try to make it interesting and filled with stuff people might like to find after searching for it. I guess that is what makes it all the more upsetting when someone steals a cache or complains about what I'm doing. I just wonder if there might not be a lot of us out here who are losing our interest in the hobby because of stuff like this. Started out a lot of fun - but it seems no matter what the hobby, there are still going to be a@@h0les who try to ruin it. People suck. 16. I dunno about these days - but I remember long ago when I was a kid, my grandma trying to feed me cheese sammiches that were about an inch thick... cutting a 'slice' of cheese off a big log of american cheese the size of a cinder block. *shudder* Rubbertoe - Webcam - Image Archives --== http://www.bigfoot.com/~rbatina ==--

  20. I'm interested in getting some software that can plot my saved tracks on a map, showing details about the current speed at any certain point on the track. My first assumption is that it'd be implemented by having different colors for the track - each different color representing a different speed. Right now, I pretty much only use USA PhotoMaps for showing my saved tracks - since it does the job well. However, I really would like something similar to that that includes speed data as well, and maybe altitude. Any info is appreciated. Rubbertoe ToeCam: http://www.bigfoot.com/~rbatina/webcam

I never did bother to go back and see if someone nabbed it or not. It's been a long time - I'll have to wander by there soon if I don't hear anything from anybody. Rubbertoe ToeCam: http://www.bigfoot.com/~rbatina/webcam

  23. Should this cache be archived/removed/whatever? This cache is fairly close to my location, and I was thinking about looking for it until I read the logs. Looks like it's placed on property that isn't exactly supposed to be free for the public to roam around on. I'm not meaning to 'tattle' or whatever - but as someone else mentions in the log, we don't wanna give the sport a bad name by causing problems or breaking rules/laws. Is this something that should be removed from the available cache list? Rubbertoe ToeCam: http://www.bigfoot.com/~rbatina/webcam
  24. This is just my experience from using WAAS a handful of times, but I've never known it to make any noticable improvement in my accuracy when I have it on. In fact, a few times I was around 20 foot accuracy, and turning on WAAS made it jump to about 25-28. Just wondering if it's always a good thing to activate WAAS... I've never had it in my other GPS' so I'm afraid I don't know a lot about it. I just always assumed that WAAS always = more accuracy. Rubbertoe ToeCam: http://www.bigfoot.com/~rbatina/webcam
