  1. From my limited experience with travel bug hotels, I'd have to say while they may be nice for some - they can also act like PRISONS for the travel bugs inside. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=26682 My bug has been stuck in that cache for 3 months now. The whole thing I don't like is that most people request that a bug must be traded for a bug. That effectively eliminates "Joe Cacher" from just going and grabbing a bug and moving it along on its journey. I believe that if a single bug is sitting in a cache somewhere, it is more likely to be claimed by someone and moved along - rather than if it is in a box with a bunch of other bugs, and requiring that another bug be left if you want to take one. As the owner of the bug, I intended anyone to be able to find and log him... but when he was placed in that cache, a new rule was made for him that he is not allowed to leave unless replaced by another bug. Don't get me wrong - I know once a bug is out there, it is flowing by the will of the people... but I don't exactly agree with the whole "travel bug hotel" idea. 2. I wouldn't mind these types of caches around here, I don't think - except I think ANY cache should be required to have fairly accurate coordinates posted, unless it is an offset. Also, I don't mind the "tell me what is inside" method of verifying a find. The only potential problem with that, is that you have to rely on this guy "being around" as long as his caches may be. If he loses interest, then yes - those caches become geotrash and will have to eventually be picked up by someone and archived. The idea of a cache becoming geotrash isn't enough to suggest a person shouldn't place them though - because, every cache that is hidden has that same chance of being abandoned. We are some sloppy, lazy people at times!!! I drove by there on my way to replacing that Moonville cache... I noticed the entrance to that big landfill along 33, but I wasn't sure what the deal was on it. It is funny, people are complaining that someone wants to put a pipeline through the woods around there - yet nobody seems upset that there is a giant mound of garbage in those very woods, right outside of Nelsonville. In their defense, it IS kinda surrounded by scenic hills... nobody can see it unless you are flying over in a plane, I guess. The Toe Pages "Now with 50% less yuck, and 100% more color!!"

  5. quote:Originally posted by FireCacher:{complaining post snipped} Heh - how can anyone decide if you are right or wrong if all you do is whine and call people names? People will take your side of the story into consideration a little more if you'd provide some facts and do less complaining. Sorry if you feel you aren't whining - but when you rant like that but never give any details about the actual problem situation... that seems like whining to me. You gotta provide some situational info before it is a real complaint. Having said that - the only problem I have with the "rules" for placing a cache is that they aren't all listed. I'm not talking about subjective situations... I'm talking about rules that ALL of the approvers agree on. I guess one of those rules is that no cache will be approved if within .1 of a mile of another cache. That is the standard they use - yet AFAIK that little bit of information isn't in the guidelines for placing a cache. You might want to read this thread from a month ago - some of your concerns may be addressed there. The Toe Pages "Now with 50% less yuck, and 100% more color!!"
  6. Usually a micro cache won't contain any writing instruments - many times they won't even have a log book, I've heard. One person apparently uses tiny containers filled with a random amount of change that the finder has to verify in order to log the cache. That was kinda neat, until some cacher needs a quarter to call home or something. I'm my "micros" I use one of those thin PostIt pads that I've glued together with goop. I mean, I glue together the sticky end so the sheets don't peel apart. The whole log book is about the size of your pinky finger. The Toe Pages "Now with 50% less yuck, and 100% more color!!"
  7. Yeah... any more than 4 or 5 caches in a day sounds an awful lot like work. The Toe Pages "Now with 50% less yuck, and 100% more color!!"
  8. quote:Originally posted by GeoPrincess:All they would have to do is rate the cache 3.5 or higher and that would automatically limit the total number of visitors to fewer than 6, because everyone knows that 99.9% of geocachers are lazy couch potato wimps. Crap... I'll have to change my bumper sticker, then. I have the current motto as: "Geocachers: Littering, Vandalizing, Tromping, Stomping, and Up to No Good!" On a side note - I've gone to the NSS forums (as mentioned in an above post) and made a wordy reply on their Geocaching thread. I encourage others to do so as well. Feel free to correct anything I've said there, too. The Toe Pages "Now with 50% less yuck, and 100% more color!!"
  9. quote:Originally posted by luxem:I personally wouldn't want to see a cache in a sensitive or protected (secret) cave. Maybe this is something that should be specified in our placement guidelines? The main guideline of obtaining permission before placing a cache covers this issue. Obviously if a cache is hidden in a protected cave, it was placed without permission - and it should be removed. Preferrably by the owner, but if they can't/won't - then I have no problem with the people in charge of that cave removing it. If comeone places a cache without permission, they've got no right to complain if someone in charge of that area removes it. I don't think anyone can disagree with that.
  10. Granted, most geocachers are good folks. That doesn't mean I'd want a cache hidden in a cave for which I was responsible. As with any group, there are going to be a few dinks that insist on being stupid. I imagine we've all seen it at least once... a cache in the middle of nowhere, with slim jim wrappers and an empty pop can nearby. Definitely from geocachers? No. Quite likely from geocachers? Yup. I'm just saying I can see why the "cave people" would be concerned with a group of people from another hobby, with apparently little interest in the actual cave, suddenly coming to their cave in large numbers - looking for stuff. "Hey Dad! While you look for that cache I'm gonna go in the cave and pick me some of them there cave icicles to take home with us!" If you don't like what I say, please try to explain why I am wrong - rather than just flaming, kthnx. The Toe Pages "Now with 50% less yuck, and 100% more color!!"
  11. I can barely stand to watch football anymore. Between the squeeker wins that OSU has been giving most of the season, and all those last-minute game winners that Cleveland has been doing... it's all too much for an old man like me to take. I hope OSU wins, of course - but they've got about as much chance of that, as do the Browns making it to the Superbowl. (I'm rooting for that too. ) The Toe Pages "Now with 50% less yuck, and 100% more color!!"
  12. It is friggin' 4:30 in the am, and I can't sleep. The more I think about how I can't sleep, the more pissed I get. That'll teach me to stay up late making a "happy" color scheme for my web pages. Go figure. The Toe Pages "Now with 50% less yuck, and 100% more color!!"

  15. quote:Originally posted by Mr. 0:Basically the technology is there, it's just waiting on more communities to bring the e-911 system online. The last I hear (about a week ago) the only place around Central Ohio that has the E-911 up and running is Delaware (Yeah, Delaware of all places). So I guess you could go up there and try it out. Operator: "911 What's you're emergency?" RT: "Umm well I'm trying to find this geocache, and my GPSr isn't working well, can you help me??" Hey... you may be on to something there. Verizon could have a whole new GetItNow module - it could automatically load up the information for the nearest geocache based on your location. Mmmm... think how nice that could be. No more downloading of waypoints - just a device that already knows where you are, and loads up the appropriate page on its own. *drool* Actually, my wish for the GPS abilities was simple. I only hope that eventually they make it a simple lat/lon display. I don't need maps or any special BS... but if I could be out somewhere and wanna hide a cache on a whim, I'd be the nerd of all nerds if I could just flip open my phone and have the information right there. 16. I don't have specific music I listen to in the car, but almost always while I am walking in the woods I end up humming the bass line to "I Can't Go For That" by Hall and Oates. I do the bass and then even some percussion with my teeth and tongue - I've been told it is quite impressive. The Toe Pages
  17. quote:Originally posted by Goodguys:Rubbertoe, is there additional cost for the service? Does the system accumulate a database of your whereabouts that you can access? Currently it seems the only feature that uses the location information is the e911 feature - which helps emergency folks locate you if you drive your car off a cliff into the woods or something. The folks at Verizon said they are planning on introducing "location based services" soon - but that would be more like automagically showing the nearest restaurants, movie theaters, hotels, etc - without the user having to do anything. I assume any sort of new feature will have some sort of fee, too... Verizon seems to be more about the money than other wireless companies. You can't even download ringtones or images into the Motorola T720 once it has been activated through them. They force you to use their pay-per-use GetItNow feature. But that's a whole other rant... So, right now the GPS feature appears pretty useless to me. The Toe Pages

  19. CLICK ME I recently got one of those "GPS enabled" wireless phones from Verizon, but I wasn't able to quickly find any information about the real GPS abilities of the phone. Someone in one of the cellular newsgroups forwarded me this URL with information on how the service really works. Pretty interesting. http://www.snaptrack.com/AtWork/sysdescription.html The Toe Pages
  20. I've been keeping one eye on Pickles, the bug that this thread was originally posted about... and I have to say I just can't figure out what is going on with its travel path. Take a look and then tell me what's going on. The Toe Pages
  21. I'm sceptical that a person can find anything in a book that they wouldn't learn themself, or by reading these forums for a while. Having said that, let me also say that I've never even picked up a GPS book - let alone read one. They might be great. Personally, I think using a GPS is one of those "go out there and do it" things rather than something you have to read up on much. For me, nothing beats the enjoyment of going out into the woods and guiding myself around, trying out new features... reading about it would only get me jazzed up to go running outside. The Toe Pages

I do find it amusing that people get so upset when their own thread gets a single star rating. *laugh* Hell, I've given some of my OWN threads a single star. The Toe Pages
  24. quote:Originally posted by umc:A rule I like is "If you don't have something nice to say then don't say anything at all" Okay - now a real post on the topic. I strongly disagree with you here. What is the point of even having a 1 star rating if everyone is supposed to be a kissass and only praise the 'good' posts? I say if you don't like a post that you read, then let people know. The feature is here, so use it. quote:If you want to be a child and rate a thread a one just because you don't like its contents or the person who posted it then:A. Get a Life and B. Don't read it Umm - first off, "rating a thread a one just because I don't like it" is exactly what the rating system is for. If I read it, and don't like it - for whatever reason - why should I not feel free to rate it with a single star? And your solution of "don't read it" is dumb, because how am I supposed to know that I'm not going to like a thread if I haven't even read it yet? Once I've discovered that I don't like a thread, I'm a little past the point of 'not reading it.' quote:Your petty act of rating it a One just because you don't have the balls to tell someone what you think about them or their thread is weak. On the contrary, I think giving someone a single star is telling them EXACTLY what you think of their thread. A side note: I think the idea of rating caches/threads isn't a good one... but since the feature is here, it should be used freely. If people don't like a thread, rate it low. Also, if you think a thread is particularly good, rate it high. Complaining about the negative people isn't going to increase the star rating... you positive folks put your vote where your mouth is, and give the "good" threads some good ratings. The Toe Pages
  25. Gee, and people wonder why "rate this cache" would be a bad idea. The Toe Pages
