  1. I have this combo now - HCx and Nuvi 350, and love having both. I've learned from others on this forum, that I was lucky to buy my 350 when I did. With the 2007 version of the City Nav NT (that came as with the 350), I was granted the ability to unlock it and put it on my HCx free of charge. I've learned that with the 2008 version, you're only allowed to put CN NT on 1 device. So.... I guess I'm saying that if you can find one that still has that version of the maps, you may be able to get the best of both worlds. Hope this helps!
  2. Check out this thread... really incredible job on how to manipulate POI files on your Garmin... http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=140808
  3. A good friend of mine had the misfortune of missing a detour sign while riding his snowmobile on a (mostly) frozen lake. He made it 100' across a 200' stretch of open water and his sled went down (he's ok), with his Garmin 60CSx in the mount on the sled. After 2 weeks under 25' of water, when the sled was finally retrieved, he took the 60CSx, opened it up and set in front of a heater fan set on low. A day later, he put in fresh batteries and turned it on - it worked! Go Garmin!
  4. Once you have your from and to locations entered and GoogleEarth shows you the route in the map window, you should see an entry in the left hand window (just below where you entered the from and to info) that looks like a heirarchy (explorer type view). You should see something in with the locations you just entered, like Location 1 to Location 2, with the GoogleEarth icon to the left of it. If you right click on there, you get the save as option and can save the whole route as a .kml file (not the default .kmz). That's what you upload. Are you sure you were saving the whole route?

  6. One other thought for you that may or may not be relevant. I recently did a battery change on my HCx, and when I powered the unit back on, everything was gone! Maps, tracks, and routes... the only thing there was the basemap - I was ticked. I put the thing down and didn't look at it for a couple of weeks, but the next time I did, I noticed that my memory card had come unseated (I must've bumped it when doing the battery change). Once I clicked it back in, everything reappeared. I'm not sure where the card is on the 60, but thought I'd offer this up. Hope you figure it out.
  7. When was that? The reason I ask is that you were probably operating under the old (2007, V8) policy. Basically like others have said they allowed 2 unlocks per software package. With the release of V9, they only allow one unlock per unit. If you bought a Nuvi Today, it would have the software already unlocked on it--that would be your one unlock. I think you may be right... it was the 2007 version. I just rec'd the free update to 2008, but didn't catch the fine print appearantly. I'll check that out when I get home.
  8. Last time I was on the Garmin website, it showed this update available for my NUVI and I was able to request it for free from Garmin. Not sure if that was because of the timing of my purchase (within the last year) or not, but I'd check there before I bought it!
  9. Just curious - did you consider the Vista HCx? I have one and recently went on a Canada trip with a friend who had a 60CSx - for about $100 less, I had everything he had. While the screen on the 60 is a little bigger, the resolution is the same, and the unit is a little smaller. My friend and I both came to the conclusion that the HCx is the better deal. I know that the antennaes are different between the two, but we noticed no difference in the harsh Canadian outback.
  10. Not to contradict everyone here, but I have a NUVI350, with City Navigator NT, and purchased an HCx several months later. I was able to get an unlock code for the HCx that allowed me to load City Nav NT onto it at no add'l cost. I am registered with Garmin, and have both units registered. If you do this, you should be able to submit your serial# from the new unit (as long as it's compatible) and get a second unlock for NT for free...
