  1. I'm posting to ask whether there's any hope to get the bug fixed in the Android app that causes a message about QR codes to pop up whenever user input is required. I was unaware of this problem until very recently. I created a Wherigo for a summer geocaching challenge associated with the NY State Parks. I ran the cartridge through the simulator many times and performed field tests with my iPhone. I was therefore puzzled when the beta-tester reported that the cartridge kept asking for a QR code. Subsequent finders had no problem until another experienced user encountered the same problem and note that it had been identified as a bug in the Android player. There seems to be a workaround, but having such a flaw in the player on hardware that is very common would seem unfortunate to say the least. I looked at the following thread but it only seems to provide a workaround.
  2. Thanks. I apparently had an outdated version of the app.
  3. We completed a few ALCs on a recent vacation and provided reviews & comments at their conclusion. We see that they all say (xx) rating based on (yy) reviews. My question is twofold: how do I read ratings/reviews of ALCs that we have completed or that others have left? Thanks, Melissa
  4. This thread has not had a post in quite some time, but I'd like to encourage rovers3 to contact Groundspeak again. I found these forum topics while googling "Gerald Roman" the owner of the infamous web site site that encourages geocachers to muggle caches and either destroy the containers or hold them for ransom. That web sitet has reappeared and is still being operated by Gerald Roman. The fact that Blue Hood referenced Roman clearly connects that user with [website name removed]. I am surprised that "Blue Hood" still has an active geocaching account and may be using it to muggle other caches, but likely without such obvious logs. Hopefully that web site will get shut down a second time, but any way to connect it with specific users may be helpful to HQ.
  5. I used to be able to hover over a cache displayed on a map and select it for several options -- most notably, uploading the cache to my GPS device. Now, this action produces a very thin box, and the only action I can take is to close the box. This happens in Firefox and Internet Explorer (on a PC), but Safari on a Mac worked fine. I didn't know how to search for this problem -- has it been brought up previously? I have a screenshot -- how do I attach it to this post? Melissa (Team Bacmac)
  6. A friend recently bought Trimble Outdoors for her Android. I'm doing some research so I can help her figure it out (she's new to geocaching). It was only $20. Melissa
  7. My family and I will be visiting Disney World in Orlando, FL this coming Tuesday. Several Google hits suggest that there are some (six?) virtual caches there. Would someone have the GC #s? We're not interested in benchmarks. Thanks! Team Bacmac
  8. I just ran the "My Finds" pocket query, and it returned only 640 caches. However, I have 668. Is this related to the other PQ problems that seem to be occurring? Melissa
  9. Maingray, that's right. I actually like the feature. When I've found a cache, I post a field note using the Geocaching app from my iPhone. It goes to Twitter even before I've "finalized" the field note at geocaching.com. Twitter, in turn, updates my Facebook status. Then my friends roll their eyes and say, "Don't you ever do anything other than geocaching?" Melissa
  10. We purchased Delorme’s Cache Register application last night. I installed the PC version on my laptop last night. Must have been a huge file, because it took over an hour to install. We finally ended up leaving it running and going to bed, but when I got up this morning, there it was! I had written a pocket query last night, and the app was slick as anything! It smoothly transferred some 200+ caches to the PN-40. I need to remember in the future to uncheck "submit field notes to geocaching.com" as it transferred all of the "found" caches as field notes. That caused a ton of messages to pop up on my Twitter and Facebook status. When I plugged in the PN-20 to transfer the caches, a firmware update was needed. So that slowed things down, but when I left for work, it was plugging away on uploading the caches. A good $10 investment! Melissa (PS - I was late for work!)
  11. I wouldn't personally place one. As a parent, I don't want a bunch of strangers skulking around where there are kids. JMHO. Bacmac
  12. I'm attempting to use the Twitter Beta feature from my iphone. I put my username & Twitter password in at geocaching.com. Using the Geocaching app on my iphone, I wrote a note for one of my own caches (GC1FNZP, Taj Mahal). The note simply said "testing Twitter" Then I went to geocaching.com and logged my field note. It shows up on the cache page, but did not post to Twitter. Am I doing something wrong? Melissa (Bacmac)
  13. Interesting. I see that YakTrax has two models: "walker" and "pro". We were planning to go for the "pro" model, which seemed to be geared toward winter hiking, while the "walker" was for trips to the mailbox. I will check out your other suggestion. Does anyone else have experience with the quality, good or bad, of YakTrax? Team Bacmac
  14. Thanks to the wonderful Cachemas & Grinchmas caches in Western Connecticut, my family only recently discovered the joys of winter caching. We're thinking of investing in some YakTrax. This is fine for the adults, and our almost 13-year old daughter, who wears adult size boots. However, our almost 8-year old son is in, at the largest, a size 2 boot. Looking at the YakTrax website, they don't seem to go that small. Is there an alternative to YakTrax, or a special place to get kids' sizes? We're visiting NH for a long weekend in February, so we'd appreciate your thoughts. Team Bacmac
  15. I'm trying to plan an evening out with my husband this weekend. I thought we'd do a night cache, then maybe a brewpub (yeah, we're GC geeks). Can anyone recommend specific night caches in Westchester County, NY? I tried to search the forum, but got a fatal timeout. Thanks.
  16. Did it look like this one? Yes, it did. It's now on Waymarking.com, and a photo is included: http://www.Waymarking.com/waymarks/WM4MDA
  17. You'll also see that this noob cannot avoid double posting. Sorry.
  18. My first waypoint find, and it's not listed anywhere! I found this survey marker while hiking on the Appalachian Trail in Holmes, NY on Saturday, September 6, 2008. Unfortunately, I cannot find it in the database. It is a round survey marker stamped with the “AT” logo and the alphanumeric combination 270-NY -25A (with the last "A" really looking like a combined "AT"). Its approximate coordinates are N 41 33.285 W 73 42.192. These are not exact, as my husband had the GPS today (drat!). I went on Topo, picked the approximate location where I found this, and chose those coordinates. It would be interesting to see if anyone else finds this one. I submitted a new listing to Waymarking.com, and I have a photo, but being a noob, I don't know how to post it here!
  19. Congratulations! I've just hit 100 in about a year. But, luckily, my kids accompany me most times, and my husband a lot of the time. In fact, my husband was traveling yesterday, so my kids took me geocaching for Mothers' Day! We found two.
  20. Does anyone know what cache in the USA has the most finds? Just curious.
  21. I've been geocaching for about a year now, but I still feel like this is a newbie question. My family and I will be going to Bermuda on vacation next week. We geocache using a Delorme PN-20. How do I upload maps of Bermuda to Topo so I can transfer them to the GPS device? Thanks, bacmac
  22. My family and I, geocachers from a northern suburb of New York City, will be in the Daytona beach area over Christmas. We'd like to find some local caches while there. While investigating, I saw several logs referring to rattlesnakes and poison spiders spotted in the vicinity. Do these kind of critters hibernate in Florida in the winter months? Or are they there, ready to strike, all year round? We Yankees don't need to think about such dangers when geocaching... Melissa
  23. I am fairly new to PQs, but when I made one today from a bookmark list, there was no "map with Google maps" icon. What happened to this? Does this have anything to do with the map changes I see discussed? I am using IE6, if that makes any difference.
