  1. We are having the same problem with a couple of ours. We dropped them off three on Sunday. One worked fine, but with two the Jeeps appear on the cache page itself, but there are no jeep icons on the cache list page.
  2. I like the idea of putting it back with a note saying you'll check for a reply in a week (and no I won't go there and leave you a note saying it's mine). You could use the money to bring a "donation" of drinks and/or a few more prizes for the KC picnic in a few weeks!

Just about two years ago, we went to a wedding in either Creston or Afton, I forget which (the larger of the two). It was about two weeks after we'd started geocaching, and we were excited about caching in a different state. Unfortunately, at that time the pickings were very slim; everything was down in the SW corner of the state IIRC. I seem to recall the term Loess Hills, "4ST Cache", and a name that today reminds me of trailer hitches. (Maybe something like "Hitch Cache (Ranger Approved)"? I'm not looking any of these up before I type them.) To add to the geocaching misfortune, while we did remember to bring the eTrex, we forgot to bring the printouts. Oh, well. We did get to see several of the bridges of Madison County, including the Cedar Bridge before it burned. We still haven't cached in Iowa, but it's on the list to do Real Soon Now.

I was so rattled, I skipped looking for the old box. As this is a "kids" cache in a very dangerous area, I am going to ask the admins to permanently archive it, and I'll place a new one when I find a good spot. Now you see why I originally pulled it after finding it recently. :-)
  5. "Please Delete This" has been plundered. I found the thread lying in the middle of the forum, HTTP redirecting to itself. The logbook, the Pocket Fisherman and all of the hambits are gone, but I did find a page from the book. It had been torn out and some punk had scribbled on it: "Neat thread. Took everything. STONERS RULE!" I tried emailing the thread owner, but my messages keep getting deleted. (I even put "Please Delete This" in the subject line.) I recommend that this thread be archived.
  6. quote:Originally posted by Zoraima:I get especially nervous when I pull into a parking area and there are people just sitting in their cars for no apparent reason. Such as... oh, I don't know, entering coordinates into a GPSr, or reading a cache printout before setting out, or decrypting the clue, or.... Not to make light of your nervousness, or the concern behind it, but now I have to wonder if *I've* ever been the cause for that kind of nervousness in others when I've been out caching.
  7. I paste this verbatim from the description of a cache in our area. At least you're warned in advance that it won't be of any use in the field: (Link to photos of the cache and maps, etc uggc://jjj.qhfglwnpxrg.pbz/pnpurf/p01_bvtw/vaqrk.ugzy As an example of the other end of the spectrum, see the hint for GC2C14. (I'd paste the hint here, but it's another one of those novels.) I've been on The Mall in DC only twice and have never hunted this cache, but I can tell you to the building where it's located. Even if I couldn't, this particular building is large enough that if you're using a GPSr, you're not going to miss it. (No, it's not that building. And that one's not actually on The Mall, And those two are technically monuments, not buildings. Stop guessing. :-) Why the cache owners felt compelled to encrypt five paragraphs of history and trivia about this particular building is beyond me. All this being said, I'm going to have to go back and look at the clues we've used on *our* caches....
  8. One big difference between the web page and a hard copy of the printable version is that the former is generated dynamically, while the latter doesn't change once it's printed out. (Yes, I know that's obvious. Bear with me a moment. :-) Printouts can stick around for a long time, so by default the information which is most likely to change -- travel bugs and logs -- is not included on the printable version.
  9. Found another bug in the search results display. (Aside: Is there somewhere else I should be reporting these?) Search from coordinates N38 51.035 W094 46.548. Go to page 15 of the results. The 14th item, "Rest / West" (GC3C63) is reported as being "103.5 mi 360*", as opposed to "103.5 mi N". (The asterisk in there is mine; I don't know if I can jam HTML entities in here, and I'm too lazy to experiment with it.) Similarly, the 20th item, "Zinger One" (GC199A) is reported as being "104.1 mi -1*". Roundoff errors and/or floating-point corner conditions?
  10. I think I found a bug. No -- I do this for a living, and regardless of how late it is and how tired I am, I *know* I found a bug. :-) GC2AD was apparently not given a name when it was created, so it shows up as "Geocache" on its page. It used to appear that way in the search results, but now it shows up as "Traditional Caches".
