  1. Always log your DNFs plus DNFs can help boost your finds as well: http://coord.info/GC2CVJW
  2. That's why they created paint! to cover and protect surfaces that rust
  3. The best way to honor the loss of APE 9 is for all cachers out there to make their own GREAT cache in their own area that is worthy of being memorable to others, instead of hiding easy P&G caches. Then the spirit and heart of what geocaching is all about will live on and GROW the sport instead of it becoming just "geo-trash" as some see it (perhaps how they muggle(s) who stole APE9 saw the APE cache..... just something to think about.
  4. Yup they will be losing income on folks not buying that trackable coin anymore
  5. Thanks for the icons looks good on my Oregon 450 kudos! salsaguy
  6. one problem I saw in the vid your batty indicator was showing only 1/2 full when you started the test/video why not use a fresh charged cell? it may make a difference
  7. thanks for the info sadly my Garmin Oregon doesnt have that option It may work on the nuvi but not on the hiking/geocaching units
  8. Anyone planning to do a "Halloween" themed Chirp cache or event near their house ?
  9. question once you find the chirp the 1st time, say you move away and lose signal and then come back to get the signal broadcasting again does it log this new "find" on the chirp as a new find/user in its memory/log or does it recognize it as the same user? I would think this would be important for the cache owner to get an accurate count of actual finders instead of those that just go back and forth to and away from the cache to rack up the chirp counter on purpose anyone w/ a chirp should try this and respond back for all here
  10. same issue here I know there are at least 3 Chirp caches so far (from the links posted here and elsewhere), but when I do a pocket query of all caches with the only choice/attribute selected as chirp and 25000mile radius, I only get 1 cache any ideas why its not showing all of them instead??
  11. I think you are talking about Virtual or Earthcaches and those are all now grandfathered and no longer able to be created as new caches, but remain to still be found
  12. Seems it fixed itself. Not sure why. Maybe the server was down for a bit
  13. The navigation routing works to go to any of your waypoints already in your unit (geocaches, etc) but does not work to just try and enter a new address in like you would on your nuvi. Not sure why it doesnt work with the OSM maps. I even downloaded the entire state of CA thinking it was because before it was only a portion of the State (So. Cal) that I had loaded on the card and if the whole state wasnt in there it wouldnt be able to find the city in that state. Nope still doesnt work. Funny thing is that the City search works fine and all the cities are listen in there if you do a search. But it cant find those cities when trying to enter an address. Insane.
  14. Yeah I was able to find those at my Walgreens. Had to go to 2 stores but got 2 packs http://www.walgreens.com/store/catalog/Acc...6002644-product They are $2.99 for 50 count. They are a good size for the magnetic key holders and small containers. They do fit the 35mm canisters s well if you fold em over For replacing the really small 1x2 broken/torn ones Ive seen in the caches, they may not work. At least I have some now
  15. What I'd like to know is where is the best place to obtain/purchase the smaller ziplock bags for the micro/small logs? I cant find them anywhere and the snack size ziploks are way too big I would think a jewelery store would carry such itmes but those can only be bought in bulk (500-1000 each) Ive seen them in so many caches but dont know where folks are getting them Please help Thanks salsaguy
  16. 1) make sure the voice you have chosen in the settings menus is one that actually CAN speak street names. It has to be compatible. Half of them don't and half of them do. Settings (Wrench Icon) / Locale (Lips Icon) and then pick a voice that has "TTS" shown. TTS = Text to Speech No TTS = No Street names just "Turn left in 500 feet" instead of Turn left on Main Stree. 2) Suggestion - Use a mans voice instead of a womans voice since most of the women's are too soft spoken and hard to hear when driving. Not a guy thing just the facts Best of luck salsaguy nuvi 680 / nuvi 760 / Oregon 450
  17. I have a 4 Gig miniSD No need for anything larger at the moment I use the free California Topo and OSM Routable maps from the online sites I use the Eneloop NiMH batteries and the LaCrosse BC-9009 programmable charger/discharger/renewer I dont have the car adapter but may get it down the road as it would be helpful when Im driving to find caches and hate to waste the batty. I also use my nuvi680 for car navigation and use the nuvi TourGuide macro feature to "ding" me when I get close to a cache as well to help resolve that issue works for me
  18. Yes it is worth it for the larger screen size Got my 450 on Amazon Love it Was thinking about the Dakota but wanted the newer screen and larger size and also wanted the Wherigo with the 3-axis compass DK20 was smaller and no Wherigo so... got the 450
  19. I agree about logging in the field as there is a limit to how many chars you can type in on the unit but if Im hitting a bunch and want to remember what I took or left in a cache, I will type in shorthand notes to help me remind myself of what I want to write when I get home. I do Upload the field notes (simple info only) and then onces its in there it lets me edit it to be the full words before I save my logged visit. Works for me
  20. I dont set up my PQ's for any automatic emails on a specific day. (No days checked) But when I want to run it today before I go caching (or the night before I go) I just go to my list of PQs (using the My Pocket Queries link on my profile) and hit the link of the specific PQ I want to run (of my 10 PQs listed) so it shows me all the details . If I want to change any specifics I can. Then I check ther box for todays day of the week and tell it to UNCHECK the day after its run and then have it run and its sends me the ZIP file in < 5 mins in my inbox and I Unzip the file and transfer the gpx file to my GPS Easiest way and then I dont have to worry about waiting for it to be available to be run 24 hrs later See if this way helps you out
  21. If you want good battery life that dont slowly drain when you arent caching, get some Eneloop NiMH from Amazon and a good slow charger with reconditioning capabilites and you will be very happy http://tinyurl.com/y6cjjjj
  22. Welcome to the club Ive tried many things but still cant get it to work I also have a 450 and have the same issue. Its like it doesnt know states when doing an address enter but the cities are in there when you look at the map and it autoroutes to geocaches and other locations fine I wish they just assumed you wanted to route in the same state to begin with and then there'd be no issue and they could add a button if you DID want to route outside of your own state or had a way to set you current/home state to bypass this step. Hope this gets resolved but since we are using OSM maps, Im sure Garmin wont do much to help us unless its doing the same thing with the official maps (which it isnt)
  23. Also having issues w/ PQ I want to run some next to my hotel for my 2 day trip and I ran it yesterday and today and havent gotten one PQ yet!
  24. Yes I'm in So. California Do you live considerably south in the U.S.? Edit: Never mind. I see (not in your profile, but your tag line) that you're in the LA area. Answer affirmative.
  25. Just got my 450 from Amazon for $376. Love it Better to go with the nex x5x series as there will be more support and new features added that they wont add to the older x00 series You wont be sorry Works great with Geocache GPX files and free Topo and OSM routable maps No need to spend more for the 450T Also the Play Anywhere "Wherigo" games are cool. The 300 wont have that
