Go with Garmin, the only thing that Magellan has over the garmin is a better signal strength and that is about to change because of new e trex systems from garmin. If you need radio functionality, Garmin are about to start shipping their new Rino 520Hcx and 530Hcx units

There are many affordable gps units in the market today, learn about the best gps systems for under $200 or if you have a little more $ you can look at this list for the best systems under $300 Garmin make the best gps systems IMHO, but for under $200 you can get the Mio C220 which is a great system with tons of POI's, if you really want a great deal you might win a Mio C220 for free by entering this contest.

I agree with the Nuvi's they are IMHO the best gps units. However I also like Mio, they are nice and easy to use, you might even try to win your dad a free Mio DigiWalker C220 GPS Navigation System
