  1. Just a little good old philosophy for everyone to reflect upon here: "The peculiar evil of silencing the expression of an opinion is, that it is robbing the human race; posterity as well as the existing generation; those who dissent from the opinion, still more than those who hold it. If the opinion is right, they are deprived of the opportunity of exchanging error for truth: if wrong, they lose, what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livelier impression of truth, produced by its collision with error." "If all mankind minus one were of one opinion, and only one person were of the contrary opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person than he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind." John Stuart Mill "On Liberty"
  2. The above mentioned cache is in south east michigan at cords N 42° 45.289 W 083° 04.592 if anyone is interested.
  3. The best cache I have ever done involved a birdhouse lookalike container suspended 20 feet over a river by a cable and pulley system. The wire then ran up the side of the hill through whole bunches of heavy foilage cover and branches. (imagine what wire looks like 20 feet overhead with only the trees as a background while walking up a 60 percent grade) At the top of the hill the wire changes directions several times before coming to a point on the ground where one can unravel 15 feet of wire to lower the cache. Then you have to go back down the hill into the river and back up again afterwards to rehook the thing.
  4. anywhere near a (kiddie) school is a bad place for a geocache. So are national monuments and bridges. Why do we place caches in the middle of the woods? So uninformed people who are unwilling to become informed stay in the dark. You cannot hate something that you do not know existed. Caches in public viewable places are apt to get corrupted and thats just the chance we take, and we should be willing to aknowledge and accept that respoinsibility and it's consequences.

  7. "the hero" has given me a new idea for a cache.....(ok so maybe its an old idea but it's new to me darnit) it's called the SUV cache! it will be placed at an arms length off the road at the height of an H2's window (why an H2? which other car gets 10 miles per gallon on premium fuel?) to get to it you have to drive to a walmart and a mccdonalds to get clues for the cord's....then race past the cords at 60 miles an hour and stick your arm out of the car at the right moment (dont keep arm out too long for fear of losing the heat from inside your car and getting your arm cold and or wet) just grab the cache and keep driving (roll up window as quickly as possible!) the cache container can either be a toilet paper roll, a cereal box, or a brightly colored egg (but no chicken eggs....try an ostrich or an emu egg, they are bigger and we have too darn many of those birds anyhow) dont bother replacing the cache just toss it out your window to mix with the cigarette butts.....oh and wash your hands several times afterwards too and dont forget to lock and unlock the front door when you get home at least 7 times.
  8. I am working on an offset cache that involves shakespeare questions to get the cords. Any help with obscure shakespeare numbers would be of great help. To make sure this is universal it cannot be based on particular versions of shakespeare (i.e. cannot be how many words in this line in this play because those can be different) but rather something more along the lines of "how many daughters does king lear have?" because no matter what edition the number will be the same. All of the bard's plays and sonnets are fair game but nothing that couldnt be found in a complete works book. i'm looking for things that will have an answer between 0 and 9. Thanks for any help. Please e-mail me questions with answers and play act scene line info if known. P.S. Contrary to popular belief I do know my Shakespeare....it's not like i'm just shirking the responsibility of looking up this stuff on my own...I do think that perhaps hundreds of people may have fuller knowledge or different opinions than I however [This message was edited by mufasa1023 on October 25, 2003 at 07:13 AM.]
  9. I'm personally not a big fan of yellow or gray....make it orange and we have a deal....point is well taken maybe I should post a "trade only very hardcore lesbian Aleutian islander midget horse and kitten jello loving propaganda or bertrend russell or hindu" material for a week thread?
  10. ScottJ has missed the point entirely...or has not read the posts up until now..... "This should not be construed to mean that OBJECTIONABLE material (pornography, guns, drugs, etc.) should not be dealt with immediately" GREAT!!!! we can all go home now that this problem is solved.....oh wait how did you figure out what is objectionable? an exercise in ethical theory.....
  11. i've had collies (lassie) my entire life and have no plans of giving that up any time soon....great with children very smart and trainable good watch dog (not an attack dog though)loves family completely though would be wary of unknown males downsides though are bad hips in old age and that poofy fur gets dirty easily in the woods (think of the burrs you get in your shoelaces times a billion) should definately pick female for gentler nature if thats an importance to you
  12. maybe that's why i asked the question J&MBella, "who else agrees with me that religious propaganda is not comparable to very hardcore lesbian Aleutian islander midget horse and kitten jello loving propaganda?" is morality a democracy? should we look to the bible for whether we should leave bibles in GC's? or maybe we should consult the very hardcore lesbian Aleutian islander midget horse and kitten jello loving propoganda to see whether it's ok?
  13. Awww jeez...y'know i leave the room for jsut ONE minute and look what happens.... now if i had the time or inclination to respond to all the points....but i dont....the redwings are playing tonight and i have tickets but anyways... "I've left NIW Ozzfest CDs in caches, I'm sure they would offend some, but others would like them (no proof of that, on the ones I've left yet). I don't particularly like the idea of leaving religious tracts in caches, but really, it doesn't hurt anybody." -martmann martmann makes a good point...but uses a very distinct seperation of terms...offense and harm....they are different things or at least so says philosophy and the law....most are of the opinion that pornography and violence are not things to brought into geocaching...well who here has actually read the bible? as is said of the clockwork orange "He also studies the bible, not because he likes the message of peace but because he needs the violence and crime from which is told in the book as substitute for his own violence. He dreams of being violent and having a lot of women who serve him and whom he has sex with. So you could say that he likes the bad-guys, the bad examples in the bible." the bible is full of pornography and violence... jeremy is right of course that I cannot nor can anyone possibly control what is put into a cache (less an armed guard) nor would i really want to...i am no more in favor of censorship then....well actually i'm wholly against censorship except by yourself and over those who you rightfully should control (kids primarily and maybe dogs too) this thread is more merely asking theoretically if it is ok to leave religious or social or other materials in a cache and furthermore what is to be deemed offensive or harmful? if you would listen to my girlfriend she would swear that Mickey-D's is the worst thing in the world, but she has no problem of trading for their toys.... or as geoworms said "Some people's personality includes religion" thats great...im all about the opiate of the masses (no flames please I may very well be the devils advocate y'know!) but what if my personality included very hardcore lesbian aleutian islander midget horse and kitten jello loving? need i bring that into GC?
  14. The guidelines have stated that: "Solicitations are also off-limits. For example, caches perceived to be posted for religious, political, or social agendas will not be listed. Geocaching is supposed to be a light, fun activity, not a platform for an agenda." The guideline does not say anything about what is left in caches however. I have noticed that religious literature often gets left in the caches that I visit. As a matter of fact the last cache I visited had a medallion in it that said something to the effect of "without god you would not have been able to find this cache" (My first thought of course was that I had used the man-made satelites to find it.) The point being though is that this person had purposely made up these medallions for geocaching itself. What if anything would be the correct action (if any) upon finding religious, political, social or commercial objects/literature within a cache? Assume that this is something that you dont agree with (i.e. a democrat finding GOP literature at a cache etc.) And also what should be deemed as soliciting? Finding the koran in a cache could be construed in many ways...
  15. Let's see here, a geocaching tat huh? I actually considered getting a C&H tat before I met GC so maybe I could just get one of C&H going GC? As for regret...screw it...life is all about making bad decisions...if you make a good decision than your happy with it and if you make a bad decision than you can warn your kids about it next time around (hmmm is there some hidden gem of wisdom here?) as for the harley...why only two wheels when you can have four? like a 1970 chevelle 454...and its very sad that living in detroit has taught me that "foreign" cars have more local parts than local cars
  16. Backpack? I guess the type of caching I always end up doing (mind you not intending to) involves fording up a stream and mucking through 6 inches of mud before mixing it up with the local gang of mosquitoes or poison sumac....maybe i should use a backpack...the girlfriend wants to get my one of those camelbaks for my birthday so i can put all my geocaching things in it....but of course i'll probably forget it....a back pack is simpley to nice to geocache the way I do....anyone ever read Pat McManus? I geocache like he fishes a crick. I guess I wouldnt want to ruin another nice thing but if i were all smart and thrifty like that I would involve batteries a leatherman a pen something to trade water to drink (and wash off any blood that is loosed) and perhaps some bugspray depending on how sadistic I felt that day...oh and a change of socks.....you'll thank me later on that last one
  17. I have been thinking about placing a cache in the park nearby my house. The idea would be to hide it underwater in the pond there. I would wire it from the shore to either an anchor in the middle of the pond or to the other shore and have people reel it in. Or maybe instead of sinking it i could hide it as a water lilly amongst the many already there. Amongst other questions i have are whether it would be approved...whether its ok for a 6 month cache.....if people would actually close the cache so it wouldnt leak. And any other ideas that might help on this note?
  18. Out of curiousity do the approvers of caches actually go out and find all the caches and inspect the areas or is it more of a knowing the local area type thing? And also what info should I leave in the new area? I left the names of the parks they were in at what crossroads those parks could be found and the cords for each of the caches (multicache). Anything else seem appropriate?
  19. In my first cache I am leaving a deck of Monopoly Deeds and the Boardwalk is for the first finder.
