  1. Polls indicate a 23% margin of error as of 04:59 EDT on 09/13/03 The person below me is likely to be eaten by a grue. -Vb
  2. Ok, serious gun question. I'm watching "Taxi Driver" and this guy's been dry firing weapons for about the past half hour. I know jack about handguns, but I was under the impression that dry firing was not a good practice. Anyone? -Vb
  3. I really like that! Is that your own design Canyon Rose? -Vb
  4. quote:Originally posted by Divine:So that's where it's from! I've almost stayed coupla nights awake not remembering it! Yes, it's a great album, and I should buy it again, since the one that was in my cd shelf went away years ago when my gf of that time turned to an ex and took it with her... I never got into buying a new one. Well, it may surprise you, but Tom Waits is more known in Scandinavia than the US. And of course he's Big In Japan. Seriously, hardly anyone knows who Tom Waits is here. Well, percentage wise, anyway. Even after he won the Grammy a few years back! Go figure... -Vb (and yes, you should buy it again)
  5. Have you photographed your work? I would be very interested to see it. (Please take that exactly as I wrote it and not "just how good are you?") My avatar is not original, so I wouldn't feel right submitting it for a contest. Though, I would be very interested to know if you would consider a commissioned work. In case you're interested, my avatar is based on a photo taken by Anders Petersen and was brought to my attention as cover art by my favorite musician, Tom Waits, on his 1985 release of Rain Dogs. (The best album ever, by the way. ) Decent resolution photo is on the site linked above here. However, I'm fairly sure the actual avatar image I use is a drawing. Maybe charcoal? (It could be a photoshop filter for all I know. I've never been accused of being an artist by anyone.) Also, if my hunch is correct, I don't know who to credit for the drawing. Anyway, let me know what you think. Thanks, -Vb Edit: Feel free to email me if you would prefer to discuss it outside of the forum. verboten@adelphia.net [This message was edited by Verboten on September 03, 2003 at 01:14 PM.]

  7. quote:Oh, you mean someone taking upon themselves to judge the knowledge of any given topic solely by their post count? Certainly. You mean someone thinking that someone with 1000 posts is any more intelligent as someone on their first? Yes. You mean narrow-minded idea of taking that little number as a concrete representation of a person’s value while in fact it holds absolutely positively nothing? Unfortunately so. That’s why I don’t let myself make that mistake. Way to put words in my mouth. My respect for you grows by the minute. -Vb
  8. quote:Originally posted by BrianSnat:dadgum, there goes my on topic percentage again. I'm down to 97.9 pct. Yeah, but your funny goes up another .01 or so, ya smartass. -Vb
  9. Brian, I agree with what you're saying about cycles of malcontent, and said as much in my initial post. That wasn't really my point though. It was mostly meant to lighten up the atmosphere. As to the rest of your post, I agree with that as well, but I don't think it has any relevance to this thread. I don't mind off topic posts until they actively steer the thread in a new direction, which is what your post seems to do. Don't make me go Jomarac5 on your a$$. -Vb
  10. quote:Originally posted by SkyeMaloney:But I guess if I were to have joined tomorrow and missed this post entirely, maybe nobody would have disagreed with you, and you could have avoided me disagreeing with you. Yeah, it’s a shame. I'm sure as an experienced user and moderator of internet forums you are familiar with the phenomenon of lack of respect towards users who have been registered for less than a day who start throwing their opinion around. No? -Vb
  11. quote:Originally posted by BrianSnat:I'd like to blame Mars, but I really think it's the death of Dan's stats page and no real replacement that has a lot of people steamed. Yeah, but that's only part of it. Like I said, I'm seeing it everywhere. I just walked down to the co-op at the corner and some hippy chick was complaining about the price of a pound of butter and that they didn't sell it in quarters. Think about that one for a minute... -Vb
  12. Obviously there is some unrest here on the Groundspeak forums lately. Today seems like an apex of sorts. One can hope, anyway. This seems to happen from time to time in any online forum. The funny thing is I've noticed the same thing in the past couple of days at another internet forum I frequent. I've also noticed that people around me in meat space seem to be a bit on edge lately, as well. The full moon was last week, so that's out. I guess we could blame the heat, but I'd rather blame Mars. Mars is now the closest it's been to Earth in recorded history. Astromomers estimate that this is the closest Mars and Earth have been in 60,000 years. Really, the idea isn't so far fetched. There have been numerous studies of crime rates at full moon, though none have resulted in any significant correlation. However, the fact that these studies have been done indicates that people seem to feel things are slightly askew when the moon is full. I think Mars is making us all a bit nutty. Mars and Earth will continue to get closer until August 27th. I think I may go hide up in the mountains until then. So while I'm not a great believer in the metaphysical, I only post this with tounge half in cheek. (Or half a tounge in cheek?) Has anyone else noticed a general increase in agitatation in themselves or the population at large lately? -Vb
  13. Why is Groundspeak so opposed to all inclusive stats in a traditional leaderboard format? I understand that the sport is not intended to be competative, and that bottom line numbers aren't really very meaningful, but there are obviously a significant number of users who are interested in this information. The information we're discussing is already available on the website, and the fact that Groundspeak has chosen not to make that information available to third parties in an easy to use format actually costs them bandwidth from screen scraping apps. I have yet to hear from any users who are opposed to having this information posted in an organized format. Was there ever a thread calling to shut down Dan Miller's site? There have already been several people who have volunteered their own resources for designing/hosting such a stats site if it would not require extensive ongoing maintenance. Why not just write a daily report in a standard format available to anyone with a legitimate use for it? It gives Groundspeak distance from the competative stats which they don't endorse and separates them from the presumed "whiners" they would have to endure. Furthermore, it saves them time and money in the form of maintenance and bandwidth. Thoughts? -Vb
  14. Well, if people are paying $10 to get in, there must be some worthwhile things to see/do there. I would mention what those things are in the cache description. Personally, I would never spend $10 on a cache hunt, but if there are other attractions that make it worthwhile I would. -Vb
  15. Hey, how about a pair of shades for your canine caching pal? -Vb
  16. What's really cool is that Mars reaches its closest point to Earth on Aug. 27th, which coincides with the new moon. Hopefully the skies will be clear that night. -Vb
  17. No problem. I'd just read about this company not too long ago. Pretty interesting stuff. Also, this should be noted by those few on the boards who consider those of us who specify GPSr instead of just GPS to be pedants. Had the news report specified GPS transmitter you probably wouldn't have assumed the reporter didn't know what they were talking about. -Vb
  18. The image has to live somewhere on the web to post it. You can either upload it to your own webspace, a picture hosting site, or to Groundspeak via your profile page. Groundspeak limits image size to 100k. Once it's online you can post it using UBB code (the code the message boards use). This can be done by clicking on the "post image" icon at the top of the post window and typing (or cutting & pasting) the url into the box. Or you can post it manually by typing Hope this helps. -Vb Edit: I type slow
  19. This is my friend's dog, and my part time caching partner, Cooper Jones: -Vb
  20. quote:Originally posted by Woodbutcher68:Years ago it was planted around here to be used for hemp rope. Those plants did their own reseeding, and have flourished. The police know where the major crops are and keep an eye on them. In the fall they drive the backroads looking for out of state license plates and other vehicles parked along the roads. They manage to get quite a few "farmers and harvesters". If it's just hemp, why bother? You can't get high from hemp. -Vb

  22. You're welcome. And if those are your criteria, I'm sure you'll be happy with the Legend. If you want to test drive one before buying, or just feel like going south of the border for a cache run, drop me an email. -Vb
  23. Changes made from version 3.20 to 3.40: *Updated French translations. *Improved WAAS/EGNOS satellite selection algorithm to select the satellite with the most beneficial corrections given the unit's current position. A unit will not use a WAAS/EGNOS satellite if the unit's current position is outside of a given WAAS/EGNOS satellite's service volume. *Improved external power detection. quote:Originally posted by Waterboss:Has anyone noticed that the update on Garmin's web site for thr Etrex Ledgend has no changes? 24. You will find many happy owners of the eTrex Legend as well as many happy owners of any other Garmin or Magellan receiver here. Both companies make excellent products and I have used both brands. Really, it comes down to features and personal preference. I chose the Garmin because I preferred the form factor and the Legend because it seemed to hit the sweet spot for price and features (including PC cable). Best of luck in your purchase, -Vb
