  1. I'd make the same points as GO$Rs. I have UK CN maps on SD card and OpenStreetMap maps in internal memory. (OSM maps have a lot more off-road stuff marked). It's easy to swap between the two maps on the Colorado from the Options menu. No need to swap SD (or even worse, mini-SD) cards. The Colorado's accuracy issues don't seem to crop up much in the car (that only seems to crop up after extended periods of time in woodland), so it's pretty neat to be able to navigate to the parking using routable CN maps and then swap to the OSM map for the walking part. The only additional issue I've encountered is country lanes, where the CN maps aren't sure what happens at junctions. I've missed turnings because the Colorado didn't beep as I approached the junction because it didn't think I needed to turn off my current road. But maybe that's a UK-specific thing.
  2. Isn't that what almanac data is for? Or does GPSFIX have the same level of granularity as ephemeris data?
  3. This evening I had my first BIG position error with the Colorado. I have taken to taking both my 76CSx and my Colorado out with me so that I can compare tracks. After about 45 minutes in woodland both units were losing accuracy a bit - I think mainly because they were losing satellites that were dropping below the horizon but were unable to acquire satellites that were rising. The 76 was giving EPE of about 50ft, the Colorado was giving EPE of about 120ft. However, when I downloaded the tracklogs for that particular bit of the walk, the 76 was pretty close (judging by previous tracks and also overlaying on Google Earth), but the Colorado was 680ft out!
  4. Well said, TopherAC. The Colorado seems to be aimed at geocachers (judging by the geocaching features). But that seems to be negated by the accuracy problems. Right now if I'm caching in woodland, I trust my 76CSx over my Colorado. And I originally bought the Colorado to REPLACE the 76. I wouldn't be surprised if some HCX owners here "upgraded" from a 60 or 76. (Sorry, didn't mean to threadjack a HCX discussion, but the same thing is being discussed in the Colorado thread).
  5. I must admit that I have a personal policy of always leaving something, even if I don't take anything. Exceptions are micros (obviously) or if there simply isn't any room for anything I'm carrying. I have no desire to write TNLN.
  6. Here in the UK some of the Sunday newspapers sometimes include a DVD in a cardboard sleeve (rather than a fullsize box). I've seen quite a few of those in caches and my other half sometimes picks one as a swap. As far as containers go, I'm a fan of ammo cans. I wish they were cheaper to buy on eBay though (the postage tends to match the price of the can).
  7. Post it as a note on your cache. It isn't counted as a find, but it's visible to all.
  8. Yes, it's a 300. Accuracy drift experienced on several occasions. 169048***.
  9. Where is the serial number? There's a number inside the battery compartment on mine, but it's all digits - no letter Z in it.
  10. My biggest complaint about entering text on the Colorado is that the letter wheel is animated. So if I'm doing a big jump (say, A to P), I twist to roughly where I think I need to be, then have to wait for the animation to finish. I wouldn't object to a BIT of animation, but big jumps simply take too long at the moment.
  11. Yup. My Colorado was bought less than 2 months ago (admitedly I don't know how long it had sat on the shelf). I am experiencing drift issues, although so far it hasn't been in the range of several hundred feet. But I haven't really been in HEAVY woodland.

The terrain rating is seldom the same on the way back.
  13. That doesn't seem like a good way to run a technical call centre. I guess it explains all the "I haven't heard of that before" replies. Presumably this information just disappears down the proverbial black hole.
  14. It occurred to me today that Garmin presumably log faults and problems in a call database. How about asking for the reference number of your call? If they were posted in a list (say, a separate topic), any future "we haven't heard about that before" from Garmin could be followed up with "try looking up these call numbers..." Somehow I doubt you'd get the reference number out of Garmin when you call them, but it might be worth a shot.
  15. I've had a 76CSx for nearly a year and I love it. I personally like having the buttons above the screen. When I was looking to buy, the 76CSx was cheaper, which swung it for me. Somebody in another thread also pointed out that the back of the 76 is flat, so it sits on the dashboard of their car without sliding off.
  16. It's a config setting (interface, I believe). By default I think it doesn't ask you and just goes straight into mass storage mode.
  17. Is it confirmed that the accuracy drift problem is sorted with 2.54? I'm in two minds whether to upgrade from 2.51 because of the new crash issues in 2.54.
  18. I'm going to leave it a little while to see what feedback we get from the early adopters. If the new version has sorted out the accuracy issues, I may well install it.
  19. I'm assuming the covering on the boxes is printed on a colour printer and then stuck to the container somehow? May I ask what material it's printed on, how you attached it to the container and how you've weatherproofed it? (I've been considering something pretty similar for a cache I'm planning).
  20. According to Wikipedia that's been their logo since 1996, so it predates geocaching, let alone the logo. I was at a church today (geocaching) and happened to notice the logo on an item on the noticeboard. Thought it looked very familiar. (Turns out it's actually the other way around).
  21. I've been having lots of instances where it just sits there waiting for a reply, but if I cancel and resubmit it works straight away. Really annoying.
  22. And there's nothing wrong with that. I, personally, don't like micros. So I don't do many of them. Horses for courses.
  23. After posting I did the same thing to see if I had the right idea. I did. Neat little puzzle actually.
  24. I'd give them the URL of this topic. (And the one about the Colorado accuracy problems too).
