  1. My fathers hand prints were permanently added to the steering wheel of our Midas motorhome after the application of a DEET product while camping in northern Ontario. It was actually kind of cool looking, although he didn't think so! Usual Suspects - Terrapin & Bug "Sure don't know what I'm goin' for, but I'm gonna go for it for sure!"
  2. I've heard of trading up, but this is a bit extreme. Usual Suspects - Terrapin & Bug "Sure don't know what I'm goin' for, but I'm gonna go for it for sure!"
  3. I provide FF's with a meal or a snack. Burger Bucks from BK go in our caches and along with our TBs when first deployed. When we check our caches we re-stock the Bucks. Maybe I'm cheap, but it's the thought that counts. Usual Suspects - Terrapin & Bug "Sure don't know what I'm goin' for, but I'm gonna go for it for sure!"
  4. Fun with camo tape! These are all part of the same multi-cache. They disappear very nicely into their surroundings. Usual Suspects - Terrapin & Bug "Sure don't know what I'm goin' for, but I'm gonna go for it for sure!"
  5. How does that old saying go..... "Sometimes its easier to beg forgiveness than to ask permission." I may have that off slightly, but the jist is accurate. And I'm NOT saying I live by that rule, just thought it was relevant to the discussion. Usual Suspects - Terrapin & Bug "Sure don't know what I'm goin' for, but I'm gonna go for it for sure!" 6. Great story! We have yet to unlock the boundaries of our abilities or our spirituality. That being said, I believe you're a lucky man, for the experience and for your relationships with your furry friends. Usual Suspects - Terrapin & Bug "Sure don't know what I'm goin' for, but I'm gonna go for it for sure!"
  7. We found some fake poo in a cache recently. My son's been having a blast with it ever since. Rubber snakes & spiders & such!? The more the merrier! Usual Suspects - Terrapin & Bug "Sure don't know what I'm goin' for, but I'm gonna go for it for sure!"
  8. Mortar tubes make for interesting cache containers. Amazing what a little camo tape will do - being a cylinder they mimic trees very nicely! Might also be able to make them look like a stump or tree limb. Usual Suspects - Terrapin & Bug "Sure don't know what I'm goin' for, but I'm gonna go for it for sure!"
  9. I feel for your loss, and I'm not just saying that, I sincerely do. I love the outdoors and nature, and hate losing any of it due to carelessness. I kind of understand your aversion to lighters, but think it may be misplaced. IMO, your aversion should be directed at those who carelessly use fire (or other tools). Education is crucial, and may be more difficult, but its effect is much more enduring and effective. Usual Suspects - Terrapin & Bug "Sure don't know what I'm goin' for, but I'm gonna go for it for sure!"
  10. quote:It was placed near a well used trail and picnicking area. And the folks in the picnicking area would be cutting their food with what? Are they just gnawing away on their steaks and chicken? Or maybe they just wait until a LEO shows up to cut their food for them? quote:Rather, the rule is in effect because of the image we want to portray to land managers. By arguing here, you're missing the target audience. So its about image? That's the same thing that's removing many tools from the general citizenry - their perception as weapons. How dangerous they look means more than their inherent value? Gimme a break. I'm not missing my target audience at all. As long as there are people in society that continue to think inanimate objects are the cause of our problems, and that perception is more important than purpose, then my words are not wasted. A letter from a guy in MI will probably have little effect on this ludicrous interpretation of a dangerous weapon law in Ohio. BTW - they call them weapons, I call them tools. So should we all. I'd love to get bagged for a knife in that park, my attorney would have a field day! As well, I'd end up with more $$ to spend on knives. added later - Hey Lep, I'm not intending to flame you. I'm just trying to state my general opinion on knives, lighters, and such, and you provided some applicable quotes. No harm intended. I hope your daughter is still enjoying her first pocket knife. Best of luck to you in your search for addl. "outdoor tools". Usual Suspects - Terrapin & Bug "Sure don't know what I'm goin' for, but I'm gonna go for it for sure!"
  11. We're talking about two of mankind's first tools here! Amazing, simply amazing where we are now as a society, rules or no rules. Just a couple comments... Brian - Team A.I. wrote quote:Lighters in a cache=STUPID. That gives anyone who might stumble on the cache, non-cacher or otherwise, a tool to burn down the precious lands we use to recreate and geocache in. Thereby lighters (or matches) at a store, at a restaurant or even in your pocket would be stupid. Gimme a break - it's not the tool folks, it's the person wielding it with a desire to cause harm. Sources of fire do not make the pyro, the psychological makeup of the person does. BeOnTheLookOut wrote quote:If I see a knive in a cache I WILL take it. Not because I want it but because I DON'T want a child to get a hold of it. Both of my boys have been carrying a knife (where legal) since the age of 10. I would consider them children, and more responsible then many adults. At what age would you DEEM it appropriate for our youth to begin learning how to use and respect sharp tools? Inherently knives cut, usually superficially, and the wound(s) heal quite nicely. What's next, pencils? They are sharp and pointy ya' know, and our children might use them! I'm visualizing folks sitting around the dinner table eating cold food with their hands. Man creates tools out of necessity to make their lives easier. Now we wish to exclude them because of their inherent danger. Remove the item rather than teach about it - now that's stupid. Heaven forbid my Sebenza and Brunton don't fall out of my pockets while looking for a cache! Usual Suspects - Terrapin & Bug "Sure don't know what I'm goin' for, but I'm gonna go for it for sure!"
  12. What Snat said above for the Small designation, at least as a starting point. Notification of some sort by GC might be satisfactoy to get a majority of cache size designations edited by their owners. Usual Suspects - Terrapin & Bug "Sure don't know what I'm goin' for, but I'm gonna go for it for sure!"
  13. YIKES!!! Our state forest areas are managed by the DNR, aren't they? Hmmm, might have to re-think the multi-cache I was planning. Funny thing though, according to the DNR I can plink and shoot wildlife in the same area I was planning on using for the multi-cache (as you can in many state forest areas). Another funny thing, the area I have in mind has been home to a trashed travel trailer for many years, and despite complaints to the DNR, it's never been moved. Caches are verbotten, trashed travel trailers are evidently OK. Sandrich - not doubting or making light, just questioning the DNR's priorities. Thank you for taking time to try and further our hobby. What's next? Hiking not allowed due to impact on fish & wildlife? Usual Suspects - Terrapin & Bug "Counting stars by candlelight, all are dim, but one is bright....."
  14. What Snat said, plus this.......... I'm as new to this as new gets, but from our first find, it felt so familiar. Before caching, it was waterfalls and wonderful, beautiful remote areas that took an adventuresome spirit to get to. The GPS always went with, and I have waypoints for every memorable place I've been in the last few years, so that I, and others, could go back to them. I'm part gadget freak, part techno-weenie, and part outdoorsmen. I love to share special places and adventures with my family and friends. From our very first cache, I knew I/we were hooked. My hiking boots, kayaks, knives, camping gear and gadgets will see more use this summer than they have in a while. Snat - I'll bring the stogies if you'll bring the cab and help me fetch some wood. Usual Suspects - Terrapin & Bug "Counting stars by candlelight, all are dim, but one is bright....."
  15. quote:Originally posted by Mad-Mac:Soccer mom's and people who search for caches in their SUV's are yuppies (or anybody that lives in Vancouver). Hmm, must we rely on the same type of stereotyping and assumptions that initiated this thread to cubby hole people? Check my profile - I'm far from being a yuppie and so is my wife. Yea, our kids love soccer and she ends up driving them - so what, who cares? As well, we drive SUV's and we drive them to all sorts of places, including caches (we park our dreaded SUV's and walk into caches like most of us do). We own SUV's because they make getting around in the winter in northern MI a whole heck of a lot easier. We could care less about what everyone else drives, or what they think of us. Judge not, lest ye be judged. Usual Suspects - Terrapin & Bug "Counting stars by candlelight, all are dim, but one is bright....."
  16. SOLD Usual Suspects - Terrapin & Bug "Counting stars by candlelight, all are dim, but one is bright....."
  17. FOR SALE - Garmin 12XL with the most recent firmware update Unit comes with the original box, all papers, documents and manuals, and a combined data/cigarette lighter power cable. It is in excellent condition and works exceptionally well. Selling it to help pay for my next GPSr. $100 including CONUS shipping via USPS Priority Mail. If PayPal is the preferred method of payment, I cordially request splitting their fees. Usual Suspects - Terrapin & Bug "Counting stars by candlelight, all are dim, but one is bright....."
  18. Better make sure all the sharp edges on your caches have been dulled. See, just another reason why Tupperware is king (uh-oh, mixing controversy ). Keep smilin', I'm just havin' fun. FWIW - We don't plan to use tupperware (personal choice), my 11 yr old has yet to cut himself with his new knife (did we not all cut ourselves when we first learned to use & respect this tool?), and inmates can find all sorts of ways to cause bodily harm (it's not the knife, they have to want to first). I don't believe I'll be placing knives in any of my caches any time soon. Although I might place a card in caches redeemable for a small knife. Usual Suspects - Terrapin & Bug "Counting stars by candlelight, all are dim, but one is bright....."
  19. I've decided to use song titles and lyrics from some of my favorite bands (Dead, Phish, moe., Feat, etc.). Rat In A Drain Ditch was our first hide, and a TB named Mulcahey is about to head out into the world. Got a few others were working on too. Usual Suspects - Terrapin & Bug "Counting stars by candlelight, all are dim, but one is bright....."
  20. Great idea, I'd say go for it! Like the tweezers idea too. Since replacing tweezers could get a bit costly, you might want to look into the plastic, disposable kind. They're good enough quality and pretty inexpensive - about $.25/ea. Usual Suspects - Terrapin & Bug "Counting stars by candlelight, all are dim, but one is bright....."
  21. Traverse City, MI A beautiful resort town in Northern Michigan. Bugs needing a rest can hang there antennae at the TC Bug Hotel. Usual Suspects - Terrapin & Bug "Counting stars by candlelight, all are dim, but one is bright....."
  22. I dunno about this idea. It leaves very little space for hand grenades. - Mike - Usual Suspects "Counting stars by candlelight, all are dim, but one is bright....."
  23. It may be worthwhile to bring her attn to the "Cache In Trash Out" effort. - Mike - Usual Suspects "Counting stars by candlelight, all are dim, but one is bright....."
